It sure was, some crappy mod called ST:R plagiarized everything from ST especially the final level

I was actually pumped to discuss this, but got quite a few lolz from the thread instead, win win.

But srsly. I care more about atmosphere then anything else, and the grinding dread of knowing that you're fighting in the face of Juggernaut himself, only delaying your doom... propels FS1 to top score imho.

The Sathanas never scared me like the Lucifer did. It was something destructible. We could beat it. It just was really really powerful.

For most of FS1, the Lucifer was invincible. It wiped away opposition with almost no effort, and no matter what victory you could take, you always knew the Lucifer was there to destroy you anyways. Much better for the story and atmosphere imho, although I'll give FS2 props for being more action packed (better mission design in general and beam cannons and flak).

The nebula was cool.. but I hated it. The blindness I think was supposed to create fear... all it really did was annoy me. The god damn lightning sounds piss me off after they repeat for the zillionth time

Among Freespace 1's chief weapons were surprise, fear and a fanatical devotion to Glide ;)

+1

This thread doesn't make any sense to me. ST:R is not plagiarism, it is a remake and everyone here know that. And without Freespace 2, there wouldn't be any great mods like Derelict, WoD, BP, Inferno (SCP) and all the others.
Without Freespace 2, there would be no Freespace 3: Search for bos(c)h!!!! :eek2:

Oh yes it is, it even has the exact same last level from ST

Raging panda is the new troll

edit:

seriously the both games have their strengths, while FS2 might have the more compelling story to many and "Better Beams" the Lucifer is by far the best ohhh **** ship, the Lucifer provides ohhh **** just by being there, the Sathanas only really provides ohhh **** in numbers, because at the end of the day saths can be killed any time you are ready.  Not to mention FS1 actually deals with what happens when you fail, Vasuda was torched and Earth was saved in the last minute.  FS2 glosses over it, yes Capella was novad and everyone still there dies but it is not dwelt on.  Also FS1 had a better distinction between fighter classes, hercs we not good interceptors and you didnt send a valk into heavy combat.  FS2 you generally fly intercept in an assault fighter defending the bastion (which the eryn does well at) and the Perseus makes a good superiority fighter, while the myrmadon just fails.

Both have their plus points and it's a rarity that a sequel can be considered to the original, but in this case its true

The Orion looks like somebody took a piece of **** and shaped it into a brick. The Hecate is very pretty.

The Orion is a flying brick, the Hecate is a ship with extra metal welded on as shields. Get yourself a real ship, get yourself a Fenris!

-----

I played FS2: Colossus, then FS1 and FS2 (its how I managed to get them). The lost of shields/beams/flak was interesting. When I saw the Lucifer it was kind of a "oh great..." reaction, followed by "meh".  The first Sath was "Oh f**king S**T" and after it dieded. "Woot, relief. Yay".  And when the next came along.. "Oh f**k....".

I think the Sath was presented as being more scary to me, but I'm talking about first play throughs, when you dont know whats going to happen. Lucy was just beam-happy and casually wondered around beaming things with its beamz

Let's be fair to Relentless. It had the most appropriate name of any campaign released here.

That effect makes the in-mission jump on the second half of WiH so freaking awesome.

It makes every goddamn subspace mission, from FS1 to Derelict and SWGP (I'm serious) totally awesome.

And trust me, it looks even cooler ingame.
