Was listening to "Suicide Mission" from ME2 whilst reading the build-up to the invasion, and then listened to "To Glory" whilst reading the Cydonia - Surface post.

****ing epic.

Whoever wrote this briefing clearly forgot to mention how we're going to nuke all the things if this doesn't work. Oh well.

First blood to Scourge of Ages, who blasts one of the walker-thingies we saw during the ill-fated Ethereal terror missions.

Incidentally, he also killed an Ethereal, though it wasn't visible at the time.

Droid kills a Celatid, while Axem fires at, and hits, some sort of rocky thing we've never seen before. He finishes dealing with it on the next turn.

A Chryssalid appears, rushing at Axem and Kyad. Axem shoots it in the face. It dislikes this, and turns to run away, only for Kyad to shoot it in the back and kill it.

A second is located by one of the hovertanks, which puts one round into it. The E takes it from there.

The Laser Tank, with only 70 TUs, is actually having trouble keeping up with the advancing infantry. Three psi attacks are made on Kyad, but none works. TrashMan kills another of the rocky things. So does The E, who also spots something much more troubling: an Ethereal with a blaster launch. Aim don't fail us now.

Another Celatid sneaks past The E, but runs into a Hovertank and gets shot and killed.

Still trying to psi Kyad and failing. Somehow, somewhere, one Ethereal has also shot another. And...WHAT THE CHRIST

The E explains to the Chryssalid about personal space by shooting it repeatedly.

Control Room entrance has been located! All units converge!

Scourge of Ages prepares the way by firing a Blaster Bomb up the lift. There is a brief debate over who shall go first, but in the end, it's obvious. Axem and The E, as the two original recruits present, will go.

Before them stands the alien brain, the orchestrator of all that has happened, the one being that stands between the human race and the stars.

THERE WILL BE NO NEGOTIATION, BOSCH.

HLPX-COM IS THE ONLY LEGITIMATE AUTHORITY IN THIS SYSTEM.

Mission Complete, one last time.

Cydonia Base Assault. Losses: None. Munitions expended: 2 Blaster Bombs, 27 Heavy Plasma rounds, four Hovertank/Plasma rounds.

Final Thoughts on the Alien War
HLPX-COM Victorious

This game was transcendent.

The team I took to Mars was the best team I've ever had in an X-COM game; more than half of it was superior to the best soldier I've had previously, during a winning game of TFTD. Everyone, even you Squad Two and Squad Three, did incredibly well towards the end. Squad Two in particular was actually starting to catch up to Squad One in terms of TUs, though they turned out not to have the core of freakishly high psionics-resistence soldiers Squad One did. Still, several representatives of Squad 2 went on the final assault and rendered invaluable service there.

I didn't have to launch when I did thanks to everyone performing well as my points totals were still in the positive by about three thousand per month just from day-to-day interception and recovery of UFOs. But I promised I'd go for Cydonia when psi training was done, so I did.

And what happened on Cydonia was beyond imagining. Never, in my wildest dreams, did I think the mission would go so well. And all without a single Psi Amp on our side, a single instance of a soldier being mind-controlled, and only the one tank getting shot and killed. If somebody can tell me how the **** I did this, I'd like to know, because I have no clue.

Final stats for the soldiers who did not go to Mars.

Squad One
jg18, Sergeant, 24 missions, 15 kills, 74 TUs, Psi Strength 33
jr2, Sergeant, 27 missions, 12 kills, 73 TUs, Psi Strength 47
Fury, Sergeant, 19 missions, 16 kills, 73 TUs, Psi Strength 36

Squad Two
Mjn.Mixael, Captain, 35 missions, 26 kills, 77 TUs, Psi Strength 50
Watsisname, Squaddie, 24 missions, 15 kills, 74 TUs, Psi Strength 33
Backslash, Squaddie, 19 missions, 9 kills, 71 TUs, Psi Strength 43
General Battuta, Squaddie, 20 missions, 6 kills, 68 TUs, Psi Strength 7
Hades, Squaddie, 18 missions, 13 kills, 67 TUs, Psi Strength 3
CommanderDJ The 2nd, Squaddie, 5 missions, 1 kill, 58 TUs, Psi Strength unknown (didn't have enough space to train him)
Veers, Squaddie, 22 missions, 12 kills, 68 TUs, Psi Strength 20.
Alex Heartnet, Squaddie, 19 missions, 11 kills, 71 TUs, Psi Strength 10

Squad Three
Cyborg17, Squaddie, 5 missions, 2 kills, 62 TUs, Psi Strength unknown (lab in the Phillipines went up only the month before, they only started training in December, so all Squad Three gets that)
Mongoose Jr., Squaddie, 5 missions, 1 kill, 63 TUs, Psi Strength unknown
Polpolion Mark 2, Squaddie, 5 missions, 2 kills, 63 TU, Psi Strength unknown

FireSpawn's Cousin, Squaddie, 4 missions, 3 kills, 64 TU, Psi Strength unknown
Ironbeer The 2nd, Squaddie, 5 missions, 1 kills, 60 TU, Psi Strength unknown

It's over already?  Aww...

Unfortunately, I am having a hard time thinking of any other games that lets you rename dozens of units like XCom does.   While lots of RPG's let you rename your 4 person party, most of those games don't allow for a 20+ person squadron.

I suppose there is always the other XCom games, as well as the UFO:AI open source remake.

UFO:AI would be more interesting.  A lot of little complaints about XCOM: Enemy Unknown have been addressed in UFO:AI.  More weapon options (sniper rifles anyone?), laser weapons that actually follow basic physics, interceptors that have a dedicated gun hardpoint in addition to heavier weapon hardpoints, the list goes on.  Unfortunately, tanks aren't in the game yet, and the terrain isn't destructible.

Plus NGTM-1R might not be familiar with UFO:AI, meaning he won't know quite what to expect from the aliens.
