Squirrel Problems Continue

Because of squirrels, we have not gotten anything out of our fruit trees this year, and they've already near bout killed one of our fruit tree saplings. We've been growing that one for about 5 years and it is just starting to have blooms to it. Well as soon as those demon squirrels saw those blooms they jumped on that tree and broke the branches off.

It's not like me or my dad can sit outside with a gun all day. And every time we see a squirrel by the time we get a gun and go outside he's got what he wants and has ran.

They done ate tons of apples off that tree and that tree was loaded.

My dad read something on the internet about spraying your trees with Tabasco sauce, but I doubt that will work.

Wat do HLP?

Also I heard on the IRC there are anti-gun laws in the UK. So how do you hunt squirrels in the UK? With a bow and arrow?

Pic related.

Re: Squirrel Problems Continue
to be honest there isnt a real squirrel problem in the UK (unless you count invasion by the grey), and if they do become a problem there are plenty of pest controllers in the country to deal with them.

Also I heard on the IRC there are anti-gun laws in the UK. So how do you hunt squirrels in the UK? With a bow and arrow?

So long as it's licensed and you have a commercial purpose for it you can own and use a shotgun, though due to the lack of wild big game can be legally hunted, high power BBs are usually enough to put a hole in a rabbit's skull.

I could go into gun control, but there are enough threads about that on here to know a general agreement will probably never be reached here.

My Jack Russel is too fat to chase anything but dead squirrels. And my mom keeps her in a pen all the time.

Re: Squirrel Problems Continue
You might try to get some cat smell on the trees. Sounds disgusting, but squirrels shouldn't try approaching cat's territory. And at least try letting the cat loose on them, it sounds like she could use a good jog. Sure, she might not catch the squirrel, but she might chase it and give it a good scare.

Re: Squirrel Problems Continue
Things to try maybe:
  • Pepper spray. Tabasco should be good enough.
  • Cat pee. Human urine supposedly keeps deer away, maybe also works against squirrels?
  • Traps. If you use a non-lethal trap, be sure to drive it far away before releasing it.
  • Automated owl thingy. Motion detector makes it rotate and hoot.
  • Put mesh baggies around the fruit clusters.

I feel like I may be treading on someone else's territory by saying it, but....  Nuke it from orbit.  It's the only way to be sure.

Reminds me of problems my mom had with prairie dogs in her garden. They didn't eat too many fruits or kill saplings, but the tunnels and holes they made annoyed her to no end. One day she bought the hose to them and collapsed their whole system with water. o_o

As I said before, take a log, lean it against the tree, and tie thin wire loops which tighten when pulled. Many of these loops are required in order to lure the ****er into a trap, to which he will then get caught, strangle, and make dying and unpleasant noises before it inevitably suffocates and dies

Do the squirrels climb the trunk, or jump into the branches from a fence or other tree?

Load up one of those rodent turrets with your Bloodhound missile. That'll make em run for cover. :)

Re: Squirrel Problems Continue
try a natural solution , like most mammals squirrels are lazy bastards at heart so if you can find a way of them getting an easier and cheaper food supply for themselves during the time you need them not to mess up you trees (blossom period and harvest) then the chances are they will leave your trees alone .....
