Playing with a joystick; something seems wrong
Hey everyone. I'm glad to see there's a community going for this game.

A long time ago, I tried playing this game in multiplayer with some friends. I attempted to set up the game using an old gamepad, but it was hugely imprecise. I always overshot my aim and it was incredibly difficult.

I recently got a joystick so that I could play some flight sims. It's a Saitek Cyborg FLY 5, AKA Cyborg X. It's pretty neat and does work in the flight sim I got it for, though it has a deadzone issue with the twist function.

The problem is, I seem to have the exact same issue that I had a long time ago when trying a controller. It's very easy to overshoot my target and it's very difficult to play at all. I'm thinking of just using the stick for other games and going back to the mouse and keyboard for FS2, but I don't want to give up.

I was wondering if anyone else knows what I'm talking about, and if there's some way to fix it. I don't know if that's what the game is supposed to be like, but the stick seems to work just fine in other games, so I don't know what's going on with FS2.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Playing with a joystick; something seems wrong
I'm having the same problem with the cyborg 5 on freespace 1/2/open. it's impossible to aim, even the slightest movement of the stick turns the ship a lot. ingame sensitivity is set to lowest and the sticks software doesnt have its own sensitivity setting.

latest drivers installed. works ok on X3:TC

anything I could try? Or do I just have to try to sell (at a loss  :nono:) this and get another stick...?

You could try downloading Xpadder and reducing your joystick sensitivity using that.

how would that work with a stick? isnt that used to map mouse and kb to a gamepad

Think the best way to explain how to adjust joystick sensitivity using Xpadder would be with screenshots.

See this little wrench icon here?

Let's click it.  This comes up.

Tada!  Many people who use Xpadder don't know about this menu.  I use it to get rid of the deadzone on my T-Flight Hotas X.

try the basic stuff first, go into freespace, put the deadzone at the lowest setting, and then put sensitivity in the middle. if that dont work use your stick's software. if your stick has ****ty software that doesn't let you do anything, or no software at all, then use 3rd party utils. ive never used xpadder so i dont know how good it is.

go into the game controllers control panel dohicky and see if it lets you calibrate your stick.

yes, there is calibration but nothing for sensitivity

Re: Playing with a joystick; something seems wrong
do the calibration anyway. ive seen situations where a stick had 10 bit axes, but the drives or whatever though it was 8 bit (or vice versa, or really piss poor default calibration). and that kinda thing could make a joystick super sensitive. calibration usually solves this so its worth a try.
