The thing is, an Apple TV is something I would actually consider buying, given that Apple hardware is usually pretty damn solid and well-designed.

Now, an Apple TV service, that's a different thing. Never in a million years will I sign a subscription agreement with Apple.

Apple TV isn't an actual TV, it's a device you connect to it. Its only purpose is to stream content to the TV, which from what you said is something you don't want.
