STR: Crash after pilot selection
Hey there,

Actually i have a big problem with ST:R right now :/.
I am trying to close a knowledge gap with my first playthrough of this campaign. Previously i do not have enough time and interest for this campaign (you know, the same story like in ST etc. ;)).


Last time, i've completed the missions 'The Last Hurrah' together with 'Betrayed' and i am on the Soyakaze now. It worked fine until then. But now, i am unable to load my pilot. Every time i get a CTD.  :mad:

I've installed mjn's Mainhalls for Krios and Soyakaze and both worked so far, and i had the Soyakaze Mainhall after the last mission. I though that this mainhall is the problem, but even if i try to play it without them (and without the edited campaign file, of course), i get this crash.

I used the Nightly 3.6.19.9677 for the whole playthrough so far, but tried it with 3.7.0 RC1 too, after i encountered the error. No success. And 3.6.18 is not working with my pilot, because it can not convert the new pilot code, of course.


Any solutions?

interesting.... I've got an ST:R pilot at almost the same place in the campaign so I'll have to try to reproduce the issue.

In addition, could you please post your pilot files?  i.e. Aken Bosch.str.csg and Aken Bosch.plr, both should be found in E:\FreeSpace2\data\players (if my memory is correct).  It seems like the pilot load is failing in the red alert section of the csg.

No problem :)

Do not be confused about two "Rank Up!" entries in the str file (hex view) after all these ships and weapons entries. Before the regular start of the campaign i built in two promotion missions that Aken Bosch can be a "young lieutenant during the Hades Rebellion" ;). But they should not cause this crash afaik, because everything was alright until now and i used the same method in some other campaigns before without a hitch.

I tried that already, i get also an CTD, without an error message.

The mipmap flag... i think i never disabled it after my FS2 Open Setup back to 3.6.6. Disabled only the "could not recognize -xy flag" ones and enabled any new feature since then :).
Also i am switching between builds very often, since you can enable it in the Graphics tabs in older builds and you find it in troubleshoot only in newer ones . But i try to remember this, to deactivate it completely :)

Interesting, just from a quick look using a hex editor, the red alert entries for Gamma 2 & 3 look corrupt, they're too short.  I'll have to use the debugger & step through loading your pilot file to confirm that, and hopefully figure out what went wrong.

BTW - how did you add the two promotion missions?  Did you hex edit the pilot file (please say no! :)), or did you modify the str.fc2 file?

It is interesting that this crash occurs when the Red Alert mission is already over and should not have an affect for next missions. I was able to quit the game properly after that. If i had not quit the game, i could play the next mission without a problem... until i would load the pilot again. That seems to be a very strange problem.



And do not worry, i only edited the str.fc2 file :)

I do not have enough knowledge to edit the pilot file with a hex editor. But i was looking into it, because i find your post in your signature in a similar thread, but it was just too complicated for me. But i read in this thread also, that this problem should be fixed after 9673 builds.

well - the red alert entries *are* corrupt, the crash occurs when reading Gamma 2's ship class. 

It you want to "fix" your pilot file, back up Aken Bosch.str.csg, then use a hex editor to change the value at offset 6B3A from 0x11 to 0x00.  That'll get rid of all your red alert entries when FSO selects the pilot.

Now, to find why this occurred in the first place, can you remember anything different about Gamma 2 & 3 in either 'The Last Hurrah' or 'Betrayed'?  Where they destroyed in either mission?  Or did you order them to depart?  Did you remove them in the ship selection screen of 'The Last Hurrah'?

As for the ship losses during "Betrayed", that should not affect the red alert entries, but I am puzzled that the problem did not show up until after you had completed "Betrayed".  The pilot data is reread after a mission is "accepted" (at least they are for non-red alert missions... I'll have to double check red alert missions) so "in theory" if the red alert entries were corrupted after "The Last Hurrah" then the crash should have occurred before starting "Betrayed".  Oh well, just another piece of the puzzle to solve  :D

I played both missions during the same session. I quit the game only after the second one. I think the problem only occurs if you reload a pilot after a mission which causes this error.
If i would quit Freespace after The Last Hurrah and would try to play "Betrayed" next time, i think i would have the same crash.
On the other hand, you are able to complete the campaign in one whole session, even you are unable to reload the pilot afterwards.

:)  I don't mind a version with German audio, I'm just interested in what I can see happening in the mission


edit: also, I was wrong about the pilot being reread after normal missions, it's reread when you enter the mainhall after exiting a mission.  The pilot data is *written* after a normal mission is accepted (although not after a red alert mission is completed).  Regardless, I think you're correct that you could have completed the campaign if you'd played it all in a single session.
