I think Civ III was the first one to include strategic resources that you needed to build certain things, and they do get depleted. Which would mean that if a game went this long in III, potentially the most powerful production units in any army would be: riflemen, artillery, and galleons.

Except everyone is nuking everyone, so nobody can pick up the pieces.  There aren't even many pieces to pick up since the entire world is ocean, swamps, and mountains.

Heh, I wondered how long it would be until that happened.
