Question on VP's and General Issue
Hello, (Win 7 user here)

I'm having some issues with one of the general problems, namely Web cursor bitmap not found. Now, I've been though the FAQ, and tried to follow every step; the FSO files are in Games\Freespace\Folder along with the launcher, the VP files in Data 2 and 3 have been deleted, the remaning VP files are all present and accounted for, the game has been downloaded and installed several times now

This is the FS2 open report generated

ERROR:
Web cursor bitmap not found.  This is most likely due to one of three reasons:
   1) You're running FreeSpace Open from somewhere other than your FreeSpace 2 folder;
   2) You've somehow corrupted your FreeSpace 2 installation, e.g. by modifying or removing the retail VP files;
   3) You haven't installed FreeSpace 2 at all.  (Note that installing FreeSpace Open does NOT remove the need for a FreeSpace 2 installation.)
Number 1 can be fixed by simply moving the FreeSpace Open executable file to the FreeSpace 2 folder.  Numbers 2 and 3 can be fixed by installing or reinstalling FreeSpace 2.

I am not usually a PC gamer, so modding and lots of the things you guys are on about are quite over my head. I did try to install the optional VP's but have become confused as to which I would want. I have a fairly high spec laptop (runs eve online at max graphics all day long), but each VP seems to be trying to delete the previous one, and the instructions indicate that i need to download all of them....

Would greatly appreciate some help, Freespace 2 brings back some really fond memories

Re: Question on VP's and General Issue
It looks like FSO can't find any of the data files.

Code: [Select]
Building file index...
Searching root 'C:\Games\Freespace2\Folder\' ... 2 files
Found 1 roots and 2 files.

C:\Games\Freespace2\Folder\ seems a little unusual, could you post a screenshot of what is in this folder?  And another one with the contents of C:\Games\Freespace2?  I would guess that you have the new FSO .exe in C:\Games\Freespace2\Folder\ when it should be in C:\Games\Freespace2\?

Re: Question on VP's and General Issue
Heres the screenshots of the two folders. I have tried putting the FSO and laucher inside freespace/freespace rather then freespace
/folder but it fails with a message about binary locations

Re: Question on VP's and General Issue
Thanks for the screenshots.  You should do the following:

1) Move everything in freespace2/freespace2 into freespace2
2) Move everything in freespace2/folder into freespace2

That's the way FSO expects to be installed, the FSO .exe's must be in the same folder as root_fs2.vp and all the other VP files.

If you still get an error after doing that, please post another log and we'll see what else might be wrong.

Re: Question on VP's and General Issue
Hi,

That seems to have fixed it for me, thanks :)

Can you clear up what I am supposed to download for the optional VP files? Do I just pick one from the list on http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70736.0

Either way, thanks and fly safe

Re: Question on VP's and General Issue
With your video card I'd grab the lot.  i.e. at the end you want all these files in freespace2/mediavps_3612

Code: [Select]
$ ls mediavps_3612/
             mod.ini         MV_AnimGlows.vp    MV_Assets.vp        MV_Effects.vp  MV_RadarIcons.vp  MV_Root.vp
FSU-MVP.bmp  MV_Advanced.vp  MV_Assets.3612.vp  MV_Effects.3612.vp  MV_Music.vp    MV_Root.3612.vp   readme.txt

And doh - looks like I never got the new command briefing animations (MV_CB_ANI_1.7z & MV_CB_ANI_2.7z), they're worth getting as well.

Re: Question on VP's and General Issue
Ahh I see now, Its the actual VP files I want, not the 3612 folder that keep trying to overwrite itself.. Download, extract, collate and then move to freespace2/mediavps

Thanks for clearing that up, and again, Fly safe :)

Re: Question on VP's and General Issue
No worries, and you just need to make sure that you use freespace2/mediavps_3612, not freespace2/mediavps.  Most mods will expect the 1st one and not the 2nd.

And the ones that are expecting the second form are expecting the 3.6.10 MediaVPs.
