Saw this game on Steam recently and after I got over the nostalgia, I found a link in a review to this place. Loving the models and all the work people have put into this game that I had long forgotten about. The question that has me going is, Is there a way to fly/pilot capital ships? It's one of the things I've always been looking for in a space sim, and with some of the gorgeous ships I've seen, especially from Blue Planet...

I couldn't find anywhere a direct mention of it, but I did catch a bit of a thread about someone flying an Orion, so got me curious. Is there a way for me to fly cap ships, and if so, what do I need to do/go/read/ or worship... for a warship.

Play Blue Planet for two capship command missions. Then install the Battle Captains mod for BP to play two more.

And while Windmills doesn't have you manually pilot cap ships, it does let you control them (and other fighters) in a sort of top-down RTS/Ender's Game style.
