100 years of Cadillac & your car!
Well we've got a thread about the 100 year anniversary for the air-conditioner; but not all nations use air conditioners, so i thought... why not have a thread about something most nations are familiar with:  cars!

I make this thread to honor my favorite car manufacturer in the world:  Cadillac.
Cadillac celebrated their 100th anniversary this year, and over the years they truly have stood out in making breakthroughs in engines, bodys, and new technology, like power-steering, etc.

Cadillac is an American-based company, but their cars are used throughout the world to some extent, although mainly in America.  Below are some 'breakthroughs' in Cadillac

  • In 1902 the Cadillac Automobile Company is created!
  • In 1905 Cadillac, who produced one-cylinder engine, introduces the new 4-cylinder engine.

  • In 1909 The General Motors Company bought the Cadillac Automobile Company.
  • In 1910 Cadillac is the first automaker to sell closed bodies.
  • In 1912 Cadillac cars received electric starting, ignition and lighting. For this news, the Royal Automobile Club of London awards, one more time, Cadillac the Dewar Trophy. Cadillac is the only one to receive this awards twice from the RAC.
  • In 1915 Cadillac introduces its new engine : a V8 water-cooled.
  • In 1927 Cadillac introduces the LaSalle.
  • In 1928 Cadillac is the first to install security plate glass as standard equipment and the first to design and introduce the clashless synchromesh transmission.
  • In 1930 Cadillac introduces its 45 degree V16 engine.
  • In 1931 Cadillac introduces its 45 degree V12 engine
  • In 1933 a year that is remembered to this day in Cadillacs, which many people still feel is the best year... 1933 series are still well-known today, although rare... SEE MY NEXT POST FOR THESE PICTURES

  • In 1943 Cadillac received many awards for its war effort.
  • In 1944 Cadillac produces the M-24 Light Tank. Two Cadillac V8 engines and two Hydramatic transmissions are featured in the M-24.
SEE MY NEXT POST FOR THESE PICTURES
  • In 1948 Cadillac designs their cars with "tailfins" inspired by the P-38 Lightning fighter plane of WWII.
  • In 1953 Cadillac produced the first Eldorado. 532 units were sold this year.

  • In 1954, For the first time in the world, power-steering is a standard equipment on all Cadillac cars.
  • In 1957 Cadillac produced the new Eldorado Brougham. A revolution in luxury!

  • In 1958 the 2 millionth Cadillac is produced...
  • In 1959 one of the most famous cars known today, the 1959 Cadillac (which came in many models, including the DeVille, Fleetwood, Eldorado, etc.) and my favorite car of all time...
SEE MY NEXT POST FOR THESE PICTURES

  • In 1962 The two and half-millionth Cadillac is produced
  • In 1964 The three-millionth Cadillac is produced. Cadillac is the first to develop automatic temperature control heating and air conditioning for automobiles
  • In 1965 Tilt and telescoping steering wheels were available, for the first time, on Cadillac cars.
  • In 1969 The four-millionth Cadillac is produced on June 19, 1969.
  • In 1970 Cadillac equips the Eldorado with th largest car engine in the world, a 500-cubic-inch (8.2-liter) V8 (400 hp), mounted in front-wheel-drive.
  • In 1974 Driver and front-passenger air bags are available on all Cadillac DeVilles, Fleetwood Broughams and Eldorados.
  • In 1975 Cadillac introduces the electronically fuel injected engines on 1975 Eldorado, Fleetwood, and DeVille models.
  • In 1978 Apparition of the "Trip Computer" on the 1978 Seville.
  • In 1980 Cadillac introduce the digital electronic fuel-injection "4-6-8" that turn off some cylinders when not necessary. It includes the self-diagnostic system.
  • In 1985 Cadillac is the first to introduce the transverse-mounted V8 engine (front wheel drive) on the De ville and the Fleetwood series.
  • In 1993 Cadillac introduce its new V8 engine : The NorthStar
  • In 1999 Introduction of the first S.U.V. made by Cadillac : The Escalade.

  • In September 1999, Cadillac remodels its logo for the 'new millenium'...

  • In 2000, Fifty years after its first and only participation, Cadillac was back at the race of 24 hours : Le Mans, France with a new car named "Cadillac Northstar Le Mans Prototype (LMP)" powered by the famous V8 Northstar which received two turbos . The car was made by Riley and Scott (R&S)

  • In 2001 - Third participation to the race of 24 hours of Le Mans, France.
  • The last Cadillac Eldorado was produced on Monday 22 April in the plant of Lansing (Mi). Less than 50 years since the first Eldorado. His succesor will be the Cadillac XLR in 2003.

Now you have a brief history of Cadillac, starting from its founding all the way through now!lol, i KNOW that some fool, be it vadar_1 or someone else will post the 'SPAM' image or something similar...  but if we have threads about air conditioners, poems about God, etc.  why not this?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, another reason i wanted this thread, is a few of us... (i can think of a couple) are old enough to drive... in the United States you can get a drivers license when you're 16 years old... i know that in South Africa you have to wait till you're 18, and i don't know about England, etc. but if you HAVE a car, why don't you give some specifications, details, and (if possible) even a picture or two! :)

(if you're not hosted, email them to me and i'll post them)
don't forget the 'lvlshot' tag
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My car:

1980 Cadillac Fleetwood,
0-60 mph = 10.6 seconds
1/4 of a mile = 17.9 seconds
not too good compared to a Dodge Viper, Porsche 911, or even a regular TransAm, but remember this is 1980, and besides, this engine is pretty powerful (V8)
(i'll upload pictures of my car now in a few days when i get the film developed):

post your pics and cars here!

i disagree... it's possible to live with no AC, but it's less possible to live with no car...

you'll realize this once you learn to drive and/or get a car...

i mean, with no AC there's always fans, but without cars, there's what?  bicycles?  F16s?:D

Bah, Stealt's pimpmobile has nothing on my... rusted-out old Jeep... that doesn't start... and doesn't have a working speedometer... or any other display.

Never mind. And no, I'm not going to post pictures. Forget it!

dude, i love Jeeps!  it doesn't matter if your car's all rusted up and all!  my mom was driving my cadillac a few weeks ago and someone ran a red light and went right into her (back left side is destroyed) but i'm getting it fixed, cause the engine, interior, etc. are still in PERFECT condition...

don't be afraid to post your pictures of your cars here!  nothing to be ashamed of...

Considering my scanner's on the busted computer and I don't have any pictures, it'd be tough anyway. Besides, there's little to see. It's an original Jeep body, convieniently painted rust-brown. And it's got wiring and **** all over the inside, because my dad tried to put in a gadget to digitally display all the car telemetry and failed a year or so back, destroying all the dashbord displays...

oh, and you should really try and restore your jeep.  it's not that hard as long as it's (somewhat) new... (at most 20 years old)

I mean if you want to get parts for it and stuff i could help you with that!

you think you are going to have troubles restoring it?  no you're not!... this guy went through so much, it's not even funny! :)

I do on my annual budget. Cars in my family, we buy 'em used, we buy 'em cheap, we drive 'em into the ground. "The Ground" meaning that that's where most of the car ends up strewn over most of the time- particularly when I'm behind the wheel.

there's nothing wrong with that... today my mom drives like a 1985 Lincoln Towncar, and my dad still drives like a 1993 GMC Suburban.  we buy our cars used too!  i bought this caddilac for like 2000.00 (well, my dad bought it :) lol) and it was in (fairly) good shape... i had to do a little work on it, but it runs (ran) fine (until my mom wrecked it)...  my mom had a Toyota that she drove and drove and drove for years until the engine seized up!  (but then my dad bought a new engine for it, and gave it to my grandmother :D )

there's nothing wrong with driving used cars!

if you need any parts for it you need help finding let me know, i may be able to help

Er... rebuilding a car costs about as much as getting a new one, in this case. That's money I don't have. It will run more or less fine for a couple more years, with a few repairs when necessary, and then it'll die. I'm no collector, that's fine with me.

not rebuilding, restoring!

there's a big difference!

rebuilding would mean taking it apart and building it again :D :D lol

restoring would mean fixing what's broken / replacing what doesn't work

What DOES work???;)

And actually, I'm pretty happy with it the way it is. Now the cops can't bother me about speeding, since I can honestly say I have absofrickingly no clue what speed I'm going at.

100 years of Cadillac & your car!
Well, since you asked... My cars:
  • 1992 VW Golf GTI 16V.  Still a fun car to drive after 10 years   Bought used -- it was one year old with 12K miles on it.  The odometer crapped out about two years ago at 102K miles (164K km), so I figure it's got about 130K miles now (209K km).  I never changed the timing belt, and last spring it broke on the freeway, damaging a piston and that cylinder's intake valves (interference).

So I rebuilt the engine :D  A hell of a lot of work and money (had to get the cylinders rebored too), but I did it, and felt frikkin' awesome when it started.  It now has an annoying oil leak from an improperly installed crankshaft seal  but I still drive it every day and feed its habit.  It's red :)

  • 1974 VW Super Beetle.  This is a WIP :)  Drove this every day for about three years, until the engine died (about ten years ago); then I got the GTI.  I couldn't bear to get rid of it, so it was in storage until about 2 years ago when I was forced to take it back.  I took the engine and tranny out, they are now in lots of boxes.  I want to rebuild it -- better, stronger faster.  The body has about 200K miles on it, god knows how many engines have been in it.  My wife hates it.  It's yellow ;7

  • 1999 Chevy Tahoe.  Mostly the wife's soccer-mom vehicle, but I use it for my frequent runs to Home Depot and the county landfill.  It's a requirement of our yuppie neigborhood that you must own either an SUV or a minivan   It's reliable transportation, but it doesn't have the character of the other two.  It's gold colored.
previous cars:
  • 1974 Ford Pinto station wagon.  A truly horrible car.  My first car. The engine finally died for the last time in a blizzard; I walked away and never saw it again.  It was mostly yellow, with a few frankensteined body parts of other colors.

  • 1971 Ford Pinto.  Bought for $150 for parts (see above), then I ended up driving it 2 years.  An ugly dark green.

  • 1974 Dodge Dart.  Very boxy, old-lady car, but it had a surprisingly potent 318 (ci) V-8.  Given to me by my mom cause she felt sorry for me and my Pintos.  Rusted to death.  Dirt colored.
