So I posed while ago about this but deleted when I downgraded Windows 8 to default. When I installed windows 8.1, it caused all the graphics and text to scramble making the game next to impossible to play. I am curious to know if anyone has this same problem and if their is a solution to fix it.

Please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

DahBlount: This isn't FSO support, it's MechCommander. I don't think FSO troubleshooting steps are going to help here, unfortunately.

Seriona,

MCO logistics and missions will run in your desktop resolution or in the closest resolution supported by MCO.
Program will automatically detect the best resolution. In some cases it will not work as intended.
This happens when Y of your desktop resolution is below 768.

It works fine under win7 32 and 64. Do not select compatibility mode.

Supported resolutions are:
1920x1080
1680x1050
1600x1200
1440x900
1366x768
1280x1024
and 1024x768

Old MC2 resolutions: 800x600 and 640x480 are no longer supported.

I have plans to make all MCO screens resolution independent (to run in any resolution - desktop resolution min 1024x768), but it requires a lot of work and a lot of time.
I can only spend few hours in a few days.

magic

MCO 424 installs and runs fine on my machine under win8.1 Pro. No special settings or any tweaking. I use 1920x1080 resolution.

Im guessing this is because of the intel graphics/ integrated graphics card. I suffer from this as well (Just downloaded the game a few hours ago and have spent that amount of time trying to fix it) and hope it gets patched.

The Intel integrated graphics processor is likely causing the screen corruption problems in Windows 8 for some folks. I solved part of the problem by disabling the Intel processor and only using the secondary nVidia processor - both the editor and the game seem to run without corruption. However, I'm still having an issue where the game won't run in full screen mode and I cannot access the entire game screen. Below is the error I'm getting - anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Magic - thanks for your help.

I think I have a solution for those having corruption problems with Intel's integrated graphics. To solve the problem, I did the following:

First, under the control panel, I went to --> Appearance and Personalization --> Display, and changed the size of all items to the smallest setting. This will make everything very small on your desktop, but you'll get used to it quickly.

Next, go to Device Manager --> Display Adapters, and double click on the Intel HD Graphics adapter. Go the the driver tab and select "update driver". Choose the "Browse my computer for driver software" and then choose "let me pick from a list". When your options pop up, choose the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

Using the generic adapter seems to solve any problems with menu display corruptions and shadow corruptions. So far so good!

That almost sounds like disabling scaling in compatibility options would work..

Some more observations after testing:

1. I cannot get MCO to use the nVidia processor when running the program. The above method outlined still uses my integrated Intel 4600 GPU rather than the nVidia processor.

2. I think the problem is with Intel's drivers and/or rasterization method (I don't have enough background/expertise to know which is correct). When using the Basic Windows Driver, the Intel processor seems to render fine, albeit somewhat slowly (the problem is really with the menus, though artifacts also show up in the editor render window as well). Using Blade.dll to render also works, but is obviously inferior. Disabling scaling didn't seem to work.

3. Seems like we need a way to get MCO to recognize multiple GPUs and/or a way to force the program to use something besides the Intel processor. Any ideas?

As I stated a few days ago (on another thread), you need to force MCO to use ONLY the Nvidia card, through the Nvidia control panel.  That way, when you fire the game up, the Intel chipset is ignored. They're POS anyway.

For anyone interested, the March 2015 release of both the Intel and nVidia/Optimus drivers seem to solve all problems.

I'm having the same trouble as the original OP, however i'm running an intel/AMD setup. Disabling the integrated intel GPU will cause my laptop to not function correctly. Are there any other options i could use to get this game to work. I've tried changing the compatibility options on windows 8.1, however nothing has worked.

I've got it working on my Win 8.1 Surface Pro 2 that has an Intel 4200-U graphics chip. I installed the resolution detection patch:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=88793.0

It now reports itself as version 427 /edit nope, still 424. Sure I've seen that it says 427 somewhere.

I've put /nosgosjoystick and /gosnovideo in the command line. I cannot remember if I am running in a compatible mode. I'll check tonight. /edit nope, running in win 8.1 mode. No compatibility options turned on.

It was crashing when starting a new campaign for me. It didn't like the switches between resolution at the start. I got around this by running in windowed mode for this period then switching back to full screen.

I am running the latest Intel drivers for the graphics and not the generic drivers too.

Cheers, hope this helps.
