FreeSpace 2 was released 20 years ago today.
The year is 2367, thirty-two years after the Great War. Or at least what YOU thought was the Great War. The seemingly endless line of Shivan capital ships, bombers, and fighters with super advanced technology was nearly overwhelming.
As the Terran and Vasudan races finish rebuilding their nearly decimated societies, a disturbance lurks in the not so far reaches of the Gamma Draconis system.
Your nemesis has arrived... and they are wondering what happened to their scouting party.
- Over 20 weapons of Mass Destruction.
- Attack up to 8 players via LAN or TCP-IP.
- 30 missions, including enemy strikes within an asteroid field.
- Over 70 new ships ranging from Super Capital Ships to stealth fighters.
- Nebula effects add a new dimension to your battle strategy.
Some of the reviews
Simply put, the graphics are some of the most beautiful we have seen this year, and have certainly raised the bar for space combat sims. The weapon effects are gorgeous and varied, and can be mesmerizing when your ship turns to face a massive dogfight with dozens of oncoming Shivan fighters. The environmental graphics are lush and colorful, with purple nebulae and golden suns looking photo-real.
Freespace 2 takes what was a great game and makes it even better. A large amount of small details were added to enhance the gaming experience and it was worth the effort - this game is more refined than its predecessor in many ways.
FreeSpace 2 is one of the best space sims ever made and is a solid candidate for game of the year.
