Author Topic: GTVA weaponry  (Read 2334 times)

As we know from Hallfight the GTA boarding team used bullet-like weapons agaisnt the Shivans. After 32 years do you think there are different weapons for soliders\troops? Like energy weapons. With the delvolment of beam cannons the GTVA might have made energy weapons for the soliders\troops. Or do they still use bullet-like weaponry?

Yes

only cool way to go

(beam guns and crap liek that would just look bad)

((unless it was like a beam tank/artillerly))

It would be cool to have a prototype energy weapon for the soldiers, but don't forget to keep the bullets in the armory. No matter how advanced your tools get sometimes you need that rock more than that laser!

"The Borg have adapted! We've run out of modulations, go hand to hand!"

Bet you still had those bullets huh? Aw well... 'Assimilated'...

Yes it's ST but it makes my point that you never know what is out there...

To use an example closer to home, take the Maxim cannon. It uses physical slugs rather than a particle/energy constitution. And while it's not terribly effective on shields, it does high damage against ship hulls. The marines might use the same arrangement - energy weapons where targets are likely to be shielded with energy-based defences (fight fire with fire), and bullets where there is a physical obstruction.

At least, that's how physics works in the Freespace universe :)

Material projectiles are obviously far more effective against armored targets than a laser/energy based weapon. The thing is that lasers are extremely wasteful in their energy usage. If a laser impacts a solid surface the top layer absorbs all the energy until it vaporizes and then the next layer does the same. Lasers consume a tremendous amount of energy (we're talking about multi-megawatt power supplies) and most of it is wasted vaporizing the metal over a typically small area (unless you using a beam cannon). Thus you need a constant stream of energy to burn through the armor to get inside.

A solid projectile would retain its kinetic energy in itself does not immediately transfer all energy to it's target, but at the instant the armor loses structural integrity it breaks through and moves to the next layer, not wasting time to melt and vaporize the metal and plenty of kinetic energy left to cut through.

So here's how it goes. Your ship gets blasted with a laser. The top few inches boil away to space, but you're still safe. Then the enemy starts using very large, extremely dense slugs and accelerating them to incredibly high speeds (using magnetic acceleration or something) using about the same amount of joules as the laser did and BAM!!! The slug rips through your armor like paper if not flattening your ship completely.

The problem with this is that the projectiles are what they are. Solid hunks of mass so you'd have to haul around huge amounts of mass through space which slow you down and take up precious space aboard your ship.

Speaking of lasers anyway, not too many people know that the word "laser" is not really a word but the acronym L.A.S.E.R. standing for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation". Just a useless fact.

I like the Maxim idea. That makes sense.

Yeah I'm sure we all know it's an acronym, but how many authors and what not actually spell it like l.a.s.e.r.? Really, it's come into common usage as a real word not by websters but by the masses...

Who in their right mind is gonna say over the comm "use your Light Amplification..." Lost in static, probably killed by the enemy in mid sentence

"Dammit use your LASERS!"

This might be a good segment for Chris Rock's comedy skit "How NOT to get your A$$ kicked!"

Minime stop humping the laser...

Anywho, I think that a small beam cannon, with a three/four man crew would be cool. It would make a great infantry support weapon.

Maybe for ground\planet assaults but not boarding mission like Hallfight. I'm going to write my own version of Hallfight, where the Terran and Vasudan and maybe a new alien species team actually defeats the Shivan defense force and pokes around with Shivan tech etc etc. But to beat the Shivans you need some new kickazz weapons to do it with.
