I suffer from the twitch related with loading new assets I assume, it's probably most famous for the new shockwave effect, where the game will twitch hard the first time it's displayed, but later on won't.

I run the game at 60fps constant with all settings turned on, yet for every little thing in the missions, the first time they're displayed on screen, the game gets massive one second seziures (either loading the fighters or ships jumping in, stuff dying, stuff exploding) the first time it happens. Naturally as the mission goes on, that aspect dissapears.

I was wondering if anyone did figure out in the end what the hell caused this and if it was possible to do something to make it stop (ie have it run smoothly from start to finish).

Are you using GLSL builds?

Taylor hasn't found the reason but there are severe slowdowns related to the very first time effects are triggered when GLSL is enabled. If you can post concise info about it the better.
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES WITH FS2:
  • Please, please, please, READ and UNDERSTAND the sticky threads in FreeSpace & FreeSpace Open Support board.
A lot of people are willing to help you, but, as anyone can understand, seeing the very same "issues" repeated again and again can become quite depressing. Please, spend a bit of time trying to solve the issue by yourself.
    (Lobo deserves a monument).
  • Then, if you aren't still able to solve your issue, feel free to ask for help in that same board.
FYI, most of the troubles are caused by wrong mod installations which lead to either missing data or undesired cross-effects between them. Always follow the mod installation instructions and keep a clean FS2 installation as explained in the sticky threads. Two additional links about how the game handles game data:
  • If you think that you've discovered a bug, mantis it.
Provide as much info as you can, and try to narrow it down. A lonely "FS2 doesn't work" is not a good report.

Also, what the **** is GLSL exactly?

GLSL are shaders (something like GL Shader Language). Don't ask me too much more technical stuff, but OGL rendering has been changed so it uses shaders instead of old fixed vertex/pixel lighting.

If you use/see normal maps you are using using GLSL rendering. And yes, that build uses GLSL by default. (You can disable it with -no_glsl flag and you'll get old 3.6.9. rendering. You'll notice that all the slowdows are gone.

But beware if you use 169.xx forceware drivers. See SCP Troubles thread). This driver release don't like OGL very much but at least 169.21 or 169.25 works fine with FSOpen in GLSL mode. Unless you play Crysis stick to 163.75.

Yeah, I've got 169.25, they work fine (just as the 163's did).

My problem is the twitching and lagging as the **** loads up, not texture problems. An example I noted was during viewing the tech room, when I would look at the Shivan ships, they would load, and then my FPS would go from 60 to 40ies, 50ies, and then settle back to 60. The reason for it is because it was loading frames from the glowing part of the textures, and once it was done, it went back to just running at 60 again.

It's **** like that. And that's a problem that's been on all the drivers I've tried to play with so far.

I'll try the flag though.

-edit- funny thing that, when I do the -no_gslswhatever, I get the texture problems that appeared in the beta drivers.

From this:
Driver Version: 7.15.0011.6901 (English)

It says there you are running 169.01 during that one. Also, do you have one or two GTS cards in there, as I'm confused by the graphical mem stating "1052". For 2x640 it should be 1280 or 1536 for 2x768.

ARSPR: I've actually noticed very little difference in performance in Crysis using either 163.xx vs. 169.xx drivers. Must be because I'm special in 32bit XP and I have not gotten Crysis to recognize or load my DX10 files yet (gotten Bioshock and Hellgate to do so, finally.)

Here's how the whole thing works.

http://www.stage6.com/user/BlackDove/video/2020880/Freespace-2-MediaVP-v--3-6-10-Beta;-Surrender-Belisarius

The FPS counter is there too for you to see how it dips. It's REALLY stange, because it's obviously not the stuff going on the screen graphic wise that's doing the FPS dump (otherwise it'd twitch constantly).

Also, it's 30FPS due to recording, it's 60 without - but the twitching is the same regardless.

Also funnily enough, shows the mission has a debriefing bug as an aside. This si with the new 3.6.10 Media VP's (but the problem was the same with the Zeta 3.6.8 ones as well).

Nope, it's a single core. The game really should run on a single core without the ****ty twitching though.

[edit]And ARSPR was right again. I tried actually playing with the -no_glsl, and yes, it completely removes the twitching. The textures do look worser however, and the Herc2 is still a mess, as are a few other ships textures.

The Uly however, which looked like **** with -no_glsl with the 3.6.8 mvp's, now looks good though, with some small differences, I guess due to normal maps.

No GLSL

Yes GLSL

So I guess the normal maps fix the ****ty stripes.

Nope the colour stripes you see come from envmapping. They are reflections from (unseen in Tech) background nebulas or whatever. Env mapping amount, (and even how it's applied), has been tweaked from old rendering to newest shader rendering. Normal maps don't fix anything. If you turn off -normal you'll see a mixture of both screenshots.

Whatever, I don't talk moonspeak.

The difference with the twitching seems to be the -no_glsl tag. So what exactly is the problem then, and how can it be fixed?

Which version are you guys talking about?  When I tried to use the -no_glsl tag in my Launcher, it said it was an unrecognized parameter.

I'm running the 3.6.9 executable, and have this stuttering problem at times too.  Even when playing some original FS2 missions, which shouldn't push the game engine's limits too much - right?

The game runs very smoothly, with no in-mission hitching, if I don't use the mediavps.  But then it doesn't look very good.

FWIW, running the fs2_open_3_6_10-20071007T.exe with the -no_glsl option, and environment and normal mapping turned off, vastly decreased load times and seems to have banished in-mission pauses altogether for me.  And it looks a WHOLE lot better than not using the mediavps - which really isn't an option with BluePlanet and some other mods.
