I just wanted to say i appreciate these huge improvements over the original FS2, which has been one of my all-time favorite games. This new open-source version kicks ass!!

.... so, at the end of FS2, we learn that the Shivans can make their own jump nodes by using the energy of a supernova. The NTF/Bosch thing also never gets an answer, so i was wondering: since Freespace3 never became a reality (i heard volition went bankrupt??) are there any mods/campaigns that continue the story where FS2 left off?

Erm...NO.

We don't know nuttin for sure. We don't know why they blew up Capella. Creating nodes is just a theory.

And AFAIK there are a few.....INF springs to mind, PI...and FOW3 (when it's done that is. :P )

THE INFERNO SERIES

Inferno Release 1 (INFR1) a great campaign. With lots of new ships, and I think you would like it. Of course, it's completely non-canon and should not be regarded, under any circumstances, as canon. Get it here: I mean here.

INFR1 - Sol-Delta Serpentis Nodes reestablished. War breaks out between the Earth Alliance, the government of Sol, and the GTVA. Several years later, the Formalhaut-Ross 128 Node, re stabilizes. GTVA and EA team up to beat the Shivans and their big-ass fleet flagship, the SSJ Gigas.

INFR2 - Sequel to INFR1 which is now canceled. Something to do with the Shivans and a really big rebellion (featuring the GVSD Het-Ka).
INFR3 - Sequel to INFR2 which is also canceled. Something about the Ancients and some really big Shivan ship (the SH Gargant).

INFR1SCP - Same as INFR1 but with SCP compatibility.
INFSCP - A remake of INFR1 in a sort of parallel universe.

INFA - Inferno Alliance. Story of the events that happened in Sol following isolation. Get Inferno Alliance (which is kind of simplistic) here... No wait... Here
INFASA - Inferno Alliance Standalone. Special edition of Inferno Alliance with HTL ships and better missions. Coming soon to a download site near you.
INFA2 - Sequel to Inferno Alliance. In which is chronicled the formation of the Earth Alliance.

Other good campaigns to play:

Derelict - A really great campaign. Seriously, play it. Usually one of the first campaigns that people play.

The Procyon Insurgency - This is my personal favorite campaign. Contains extremely challenging missions and a gripping plot.

The FreeSpace Port - Not really a continuation of the story, but it puts all of the great experience of FS1 into the engine of FS2.

Volition never went bankrupt. You're thinking of Interplay. (although they seem to be making some progress)

*gently reminds everyone that, although all of those are, indeed, great campaigns; only the FreeSpace Port is considered canon, as Snail mentioned above.

Woo, never can be too sure in averting potential (hushed voice) "Eff-Ess-Three" discussions like: "Would they have done it this way..."

I just finished the FSPort too, the last mission in the Sol system was cool. I'd never thought about what was on the other side, although there must have been something there.

In this order play FSport, Silent Threat (A revamped version, Silent Threat: Reborn is coming out soon), FS2, Derelict, someone fill in the rest 'cause I don't know any more. The last campaign in the FS timeline AFAIK is Inferno R1.

Other good campaigns to play:
 - Rain on Ribos IV - Orph3u5, what happened to Tombaugh Station.
 - The Procyon Insurgency - CP5670, the fringe system of Procyon, Ancients, the Hades long lost twin and much, much more!
 - Sol: A History - Blaise Russel, What happened to Sol after the Lucifer. Made before INFA
 - The rest of Blaise's campaigns - Seriously, this guy is a master. Also get Shivans Which isn't listed on his site.
Can't think of any more right now, but I'll be back!

If you've played Derelict, don't forget to try the BWO Demo. It should be included with the FSO Installer.

Also, try Homesick. It takes place right before the FS2 campaign right after the formation of the GTVA and right before and during the NTF insurrection. Unfortunately, my copy of Homesick is busted as after
Spoiler:
the convoy makes the jump out of the asteroid field and the Iota transports are found to be carrying stolen GTVA tech.
The following mission just crashes my FS2 copy.

it's strange

I watched the endgame for both Pilot death and pilot live.

Half the Sathanas enter subspace when Capella goes up, and half stay.
