Very similar problems here, but I'm on mac 10.6.8, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT
The release build insta-crashes no matter what mod is selected in the launcher. Debug runs but is full of bizzarre visual issues like projectiles and engine trails showing up as blank rectangles, glow points being visible through ships, etc. I can run debug in software mode (nohtl), but disabling shader support (no_glsl) produces this crash after loading up the first cutscene mission:
