It looks like you could make a low enough poly version of that for FS2

Yub yub, Max!! I could. But not sure where how to minimize its polygon to make it still look like the original. Maybe remove the radar dish (to dark to see but its there), use extruded triangles for the cannons and so forth I guess.

Overall, I made the Neptune cruiser to be fast, light, but has enough firepower to neutralise any other cruiser that is in front of it.

Actually, I did make the Neptune with FreeSpace 2 iin mind. That probably explains why it looks so simple.

Hey, Max! Maybe you could give me an idea of where to reduce the number of polygons?

Wow NeoH, this is a top-notch model. I'm quite impressed. Why didn't you start FS2 modelling or space sim modelling before? You obviously have a fair bit of skill! Of course I would have liked it if the turrets were not purple.

Seriously though, nice job. I would love to see this whizzing around in FS2. Well done

It is? I thought you guys did far better looking ships than I do. I started modelling in 1998 when I was still learning 3D Studio Max in my polytechnic. As for the cannons, well, I'll be going home to redo them a bit. Actually, I'll redo the entire scene. Camera's too low and the lighting is not bright enough.

To lower the poly count, well, reap the the roud "air intakes" on the side reactors, maps will do as good. for gun barrels, use squares. Otherwise, I think the poly have already a low polycount. If you wxant, I can help to reduve the polycount, it seems that I won't have to worry about UVW mapping   One thing: did you used box mapping? I know it looks great, but when you convert a max file to 3ds, the objects are broken into parts to convert the box mapping into 6 flat mapping... not very good for the vertice count (I did that for the SDF1, the max file had 460 vertics, the 3ds one had 1600, ouch!)

Not bad...but the front view has some serious perspective problems. Makes the ship look VERY different than the angle render, which looks great.

Those aren't "air intakes". I'm assuming you are talking about the things on the end of the wings. They are actual fact huge beam cannons. I can reduce the poly count there I think. It would look a bit more blocky than it already is I guess.

And yes, I did use UVW Mapping and selected box mapping. The texture didn't look so good with planar.

Oh well. I'm still at a loss as to how to do what you guys suggested anyway. I'll wait after the modelling competition then figure out what to do with it.

The turrets? I just used Blinn then assigned it a colour, adjusted the shine and glossiness etc etc and ended up with the "wonderful" colour for the turrets.

You should do them like the Hecate's turrets.
