Re: A celebration of Freespace
Been modding my local install with some small tweaks. Most recently, I've been tweaking the shaders, which are based off the ones released with WiH. They feature anisotropic specular lighting.

CUT

I never imagined that Artemis Station could look better than it does on QuantumDelta's souped-up PC.

Are you trying to use ultra-realistic light settings? Most of the ships seem a bit too dark.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Appearances of a scene depend on lighting tweaks, less so much system performance. I can get away with screenshots, because you don't have to see how lolworthy blue planet on insane is at 2-10 fps. In fact, Crysis maxed out and with heavy TOD tweaking at 1080p is a godly pretty slideshow on my laptop.

I got the lighting to look like that by going into the main-f.sdr file and tweaking the relevant values. My emphasis has been on a realistic look without overdone specular effects. I do agree that the lighting's a bit dark at times, so I'll see what I can do without making ships look fake. I started playing with the shader file directly after realizing that half the lighting flags don't work anymore, and the other half don't cover what I want to change.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
The nebula looks like a green sandworm that's about to swallow the node.

So I went back and tweaked the lighting settings again. Was lazy, so these screenshots feature a grand 768p with poor man's FXAA so I could take screenshots without looking at a slideshow. If you squint really hard they'll look like 1080p.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Okay, I lied. I decided to hit the credits with actual 1080p. I hope you forgive the double post. I don't apologize for spoilers, because you should have played this by now :P

This one shows that there is visibility even with a dark sun.

And this one shows off a backlighting bug that has existed since anisotropic specular lighting was released. Either no one else has this bug, or no one is available to fix it.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
What's the bug in the last one? The Solaris glowing around the sun's corona, or the reflection of the sun off the planet?

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Look at how bright the solaris is on the shadowed side (side facing camera). That lighting is all coming from the sun(s?) BEHIND the ship, and it doesn't make sense. This is not just glow from the corona. Parts of the ship are so bright that they're white. This only seems to happen in very specific rotations of models relative to light sources.

Reflection of the sun off the planet seems to be a (clever?) hack (?) done in the mission itself, since it comes with its own sun flare.

Here's what it looks like with anisotropic specular turned off, but everything else exactly the same.

Notice how the side facing the camera is dark light it should be.

(same problem as here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=79369.msg1570922#msg1570922, but I realize the images have long since been deleted)

Given the size of the Whitehall...make it a Sathanas.

Nice fighter. Also, shouldn't the Phalanx turret point sideways?

Re: A celebration of Freespace
they should but i didn't want to take the time to change the turret rotation in the table's.
