You are kidding right? When I upgraded to XP the performance improvement over 2k was eyeball obvious (which means a lot when you consider that it takes a fair bit to make me notice especially when I don't believe in benchmark programs) on
exactly the same system. I can't think what the performance difference would be over 98. Even when I first upgraded to NT4.0 all those years ago the performance difference over 98 was eyeball obvious (even in only 32Mb of RAM).
Personally, I'd go for Win2k. You get most of the features of XP and none of the bloat. [/B]
Theres a lot of useful stuff in that "bloat" such as an improved application compatibility engine (M$ actually ported a lot of the contentious 9x API functions over to XP so when they were switched in they behave
exactly the same as under 9x since its essentially the same code. Its still not perfect mind you but it shows an effort and with the engine in place theres no reason why it can't be perfect at some point down the track. Important when you consoder M$ are going to kill 9x off for good), increased performanced as mentioned before, better permission handling and despite everyones derision, the new interface is pretty damn cool too (although its perfectly acceptable to hate the default theme, just don't write Luna off based on it. See the "Silver" them or what is possible over at a site like
http://www.themexp.org before coming to a conclusion)
