Great Googamooga! That looks pretty damn fantastic, and open-ended environments make me all tingly.  Yet another pressing reason for me to upgrade my 4-year old Pentium IV. :nervous:

This is neat and all, but should a company really be BRAGGING that their engine only runs well on an overclocked quad-core CPU?

The euro-hacker mentality over at Remedy has clearly gotten out of control.
ZylonBane's opinions do not represent those of the management.

You know I was thinking the exact same thing ZB... not exactly the smartest move. That said it'll apparently run on the X360 so there must be some level of workable gameplay...

...that said the engine looks very powerful indeed...

...provided of course that you have the power to make it work. He does keep going on about it not being possible to do this stuff with a single core processor... well that's great and all but it prices a hell of a lot of people out of the market instantly.

Talk about name-dropping...after awhile it got kind of annoying.

And yea, if it's soooo uber, how does he expect the 90% of gamers out there with average PCs to run it?

Also, this is a psychological thriller, right? So why is all this power needed for something like that? System Shock 2 and the like did it with hardly anything.

I don't think it will be that heavy to run... And in 12 months the engine will look old, the way of the gaming world. So quit your *****ing about the graphics and wait to see if the game is good or not.

God damn it, allways about the engine. ****ing candy eyes, no wonder no one bothers to make good games anymore, just new and prettier tech demos...

Very nice. It's never going to be commercially viable if it demands quad core specs though.

To be fair Prophet... they are the ones who're going on about their engine. All we've really been given is eye candy.

To be fair. Name a devloper who doesn't do that. And they do it because flocks of bumb mapped technozombies are screeching with their antialised drooling mouths for those candy shots. And then praise the developers to high heavens when they can see their reflections form the eye of another unimaginative generic doom monster clone that has no AI to speak of and is there only to cast creepy shadows in a plot written by someone in pre school.

Ok I was a bit harsh. There are still people who do good games. But not much consumers who appreciate other than graphics.

That's a point I'll conceed. There is a lot of focus on graphics over anything else these days - yes - including gameplay.

Something of a generalisation - there are exceptions out there as you said - but people will buy what they like the look of and the chances of people investing in a game that they think looks horrible is quite low. Considering you're going to be looking at the graphics for a while - it's important that they're attractive to you.

In that respect I'm guilty myself. I prefer pretty games over non-pretty games and may be doing myself out of some fun gameplay in doing so.

Getting back to Alan Wake though, they really didn't tell us anything about what sort of gameplay we could expect. If I were involved in games production I'm fairly sure I'd like to balance the "look how pretty this is" with the "and here's what you can do in it".

They get good results from audience when they are throwing that candy around. There was a hype in Pelit magazine. Apparently there's lots of goofing around with shadows. And baaad things happen at night that mess with the characters sanity. There will be night creatures or some such. According to the hype it's not going to be a shooting gallery for monsters, but builds the athmosphere in different ways. More focus on story. Now, if the story is good I might enjoy it. But that remains to be seen.

As an aside, I've noted a number of previews (such as for Call of Duty 3) for the Wii of all-next-gen-console-titles that have pointed out a lack of graphical oomph (versus PS3 and 360), whilst simultaneously noting said game is much more fun (versus Ps3 and 360).  This does make me suspect that the next generations relative successes will indicate the future of games for many of us.

Rather contextual, that; not everyone even plays multiplayer......or enjoys it.  We're talking about basic control mechanics here, after all...

True. But I think the vast majority of people would agree that playing with other people > playing against AI.

There will be no multiplayer in this game. "We'd much rather give the players a great single-player game, than a mediocre single and multiplayer game." -Petri Järvilehto.

It is probabily it won't run on single core CPU, however it will barely run on ones that support Hyper-Threading
