you can get the Maya PLE (Persnal learning Edition) for free, it basicly is the full version, but you cannot make money from using it, or else they hunt you down and break your kneecaps

3DsMax is good too. The lastest version should be 4.2 I think. Interface is better then lightwaves. But it would be easier for you to start learning truespace 1 ( yeah, I know)

I don't agree whit the interface stuff, Lightwaves interface is very clear and the buttons actualy do what they are ment for. I used 3DSmax for a while and it's damn confusing. LW is more easy to learn. But thats my personel opinion.

There have been several topics on this before in varying degrees of detail however your question lacks enough focus to answer correctly. Try using the search feature of the forum or a search engine for exteroir tutorials on engines such as Google.

We should also have some tutorials up on rendering at some stage.
