If you're in this thread, it means you want to get Freespace Open working on your computer. This is the simplest way to get it done, and make the main campaign looks like the pretty pictures.
For that to work you need to have FreeSpace 2 installed on your computer, patched to version 1.2. If you have the game but don't have it patched to 1.2, go to
http://www.pxo.net/files/fs21x-12.exe and download it from there.
Now that you have FreeSpace 2 on your computer, working as gods intended, the rest is simple.
Download the Windows Pack from
here, and the OpenAL just to be on the safe side (install the OpenAL).
Download the Media VP's from
here. Hit every link in that first post except for the Zpack and Cell VP's.
Now that you have the files from those two threads, primarily the 3.6.9 exe's, the Launcher, and the Media VP's, put them in your main FreeSpace 2 folder.
It should look similar to this one, though your experience may vary due to what kind of a copy of FS2 you have.
After you have placed all of those files into the main FS2 folder like shown in the picture above, run the launcher. Click "Browse" and choose the 3.6.9.exe or whatever the hell the newest version is.
After you do that, go to "Features", choose "Easy Setup" and select "All features on". If you have a slow computer, pick and choose which graphical enhancements you want to run from the tick boxes in the window below. (We really need updated descriptions of what the different options actually DO). In the mean time, experiment. Finally go to "Video" and select whatever resolution and graphical options you want. Choosing OpenGL over Direct3D is preferable due to the fact the support for Direct3D is gone and it'll be out anyway in the next version of the exe.
Then click on all the other tabs and make sure you have all the other options set up properly.
Click "Run" and pray for the best.
