No, ogg is lossy like mp3. Implementing mp3 was never about quality, but license you need to pay for in order to distribute mp3 encoder or decoder.

I'm pretty sure the box is implying that the game came with extra MP3 versions of the music, not that they somehow finagled it into the game proper.

Why, what's the point? It'd be like distributing tga's, inefficient. Good to have when you want to alter original so that there won't be quality loss, but not for distribution purposes.

Unless our sound hardware can take special advantage of Vorbis over FLAC to use significantly less memory, it's not really like distributing TGAs.

Except that FLAC takes significantly more space, thus makes for significantly increased download sizes. On top of that. music industry probably wouldn't be too delighted of their soundtracks being distributed in lossless with mods. Music that is free to use and provided in lossless format by author is another matter. And since FSO should preload all sounds and music (there is a flag for this in the launcher), using FLAC also translates to increased RAM usage.

Yes, more memory for more quality.  That's the idea.  Not saying it's definitely always worth it, but the option might be nice.

The massive red line going across the hull seems very out of place. I'd suggest having it toned and burnt similar to the metal plating

Not out of place as such, but wants blending into the hull texture so you can see the hull plate edges though the paint
