What campaign is the Persistence from?  And could you post your spec settings?  I'm liking how high you seem to have the -spec_tube set.

I hadn't realized how subtle the environment maps can be sometimes.  You can't really tell in the second picture unless you were to see it with your ship in motion.

IIRC that was a pic before I reformatted my hard drive to make way for better hardware, but i think this is what i had before: -spec -glow -env -jpgtga -nomotiondebris -missile_lighting -img2dds -no_vsync -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -warp_flash -alpha_env -save_render_target  -allslev

excluding save_render target.

I think everyone here knows that the beam is split in half because it's an animation, and not a static thing, it's meant to be seen in motion, and funny when people see a snapshot of it and claim not to notice what it is when they see any snapshot of dab's beam affects.
