The leek is the national vegetable of Wales. I've absolutely no ****ing idea why, though. It's too wet to grow the bloody things properly most of the time...

Welsh soldiers fighting the english - can't remember exactly which era - tied leeks to their helmets to distinguish themselves (the 2 armies had identical uniforms)

EDIT; fighting the Saxons in the 7th century, apparently.
