TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
Hello chaps,

I'm fairly sure I've done everything correctly however when I launch AoA I get a pretty black screen.
The launcher also won't detect my F-16 combat stick, whilst Windows Control panel will.
Finally, It's not pretty :( I downloaded the "pretty files" but don't know if they're in the correct spot of if they're working.

I took the liberty of launching the game in debug mode and got some wonderful code that makes no sense to me,
I'm sure smart gentleman like you will understand:

Please find a file called "fs2_open.log" (Should be in <FreeSpace directory>\data) and post it here.

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
Several things:

1. Your GPU drivers are incredibly outdated or corrupted. Please update them.
2. You have not followed the MediaVPs install instructions correctly. Please go here and install them again.

Regarding 1: I see that you're running BP through Parallels. You should use either a normal Windows install, or one of the native MacOS binaries.

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
Regarding the joystick, Xpadder should alleviate your problem if you can't get it working through regular means.  (Xpadder maps controller / joystick inputs to mouse / keyboard inputs.)

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
Which version of MacOS X are you on? (Since it seems like you are on Mac by your use of parallels.) If you are on 10.7 (Lion) or earlier (Snow Leopard) (like me) you may need an unofficial version of the Mac build from jg18 temporarily to get BP working (MacOS is generally slow to upgrade their OpenGL version).

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83509.msg1669187#msg1669187

After using a true Mac build (either the official or unofficial one), your stick should "just work".

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
Hey guys thanks for your help,

Yes I am running parallels and this is the second time that I've been trying to get Blueplanet and Freespace 2 working, however I left my copmuter alone for too long and all of the files went walkabout.

Mac OS is: 10.7.5

Regarding the MediaVPs the instructions on installation confuse me, if I can get the installer to do all of the work for me where is said installer located and how do I get the files? Or if I'm doing this manually where do I extract all of files too.
Small words please lads I'm not that tech savy if you haven't already noticed.

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
I have not been able to get FSO working in Parallels. Funny since it worked in VMWare Fusion. I guess Parallels is optimized for DirectX and not OpenGL. So much for FREDding in Parallels. :(

Back to the OP, though.

Denirio, it's very unlikely you'll get BP working in Parallels. Could you copy your FreeSpace 2 folder to OS X? You can do that by left-clicking on the FreeSpace 2 folder in Windows Explorer while Parallels is running and then dragging while holding the mouse button down to either your OS X Applications folder in OS X Finder or to your OS X Desktop if that's easier. Do this after you fix the MediaVPs, though.

Then get the BP build I made, open the .dmg file, and copy (click & drag) the FS2_Open .app files to your OS X FreeSpace 2 folder. Also copy (click & drag) the data folder inside the .dmg's blueplanet folder to the blueplanet folder in your OS X FreeSpace 2 folder.

Then get wxLauncher, open it, go to the Basic Settings tab, click on Browse, and select your FreeSpace 2 folder.

Then go to wxLauncher's mods tab and select Blue Planet. From there you can press Play (lower-right corner).

Also, how did you get AoA and not WiH (BP 2)?

EDIT: To answer your question, the installer is currently broken, and the new one isn't ready yet. You should extract the files to "C:\GOG Games\Freespace 2\mediavps_3612\" in your Parallels setup. If any of the files end up in "C:\GOG Games\Freespace 2\mediavps_3612\mediavps_3612\", move those files to "C:\GOG Games\Freespace 2\mediavps_3612\".

EDIT 2: By F-16 combat stick, did you mean the CH Products Combatstick? That should work in OS X AFAIK. Try plugging it in before you open wxLauncher, then select it in wxLauncher's Basic Settings tab.

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
I HAVE had BP work in Parallels flawlessly before, about 6 months ago. I created a post asking for help back then and some awesome guys on this forum helped me get it working.

I'll try your advice though, many thanks.

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
Impressive. I assumed from your last post in June that you'd given up and left, so glad to hear that you got it working.

Your post inspired me to try again to get the game working in Parallels. I've gotten it to work in Parallels Desktop 8 by disabling shaders (that is, by checking "Disable GLSL (shader) support" under Troubleshoot in the launcher's features/advanced settings tab), but I hope you don't have to do that to get it working, since the game will look much worse without shaders.

What version of Parallels do you have?

EDIT: Since you asked for small words, shaders are the wizardry that makes the graphics so pretty.

I have also attached screenshots of both my Freespace 2 folder and BP folder, because i have absolutly no idea what to move and or delete to get the thing working again.

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
I'd say you should fix the MediaVPs first by reinstalling them within Parallels (Windows), as The E said. I mentioned before where to extract the files.

After that's done:

First, if Parallels is running in full screen, set it so that it's not full screen, that is, that it's running in a window.

From your first screenshot, click on "GOG Games" at the top. Then on the right side of the screen, there'll be an icon like the one labeled "blueplanet" in the first screenshot, except that it will be labeled "Freespace 2". Click on that icon, hold down the mouse button (or touchpad or whatever you're using), and drag out of the Parallels window to your desktop in OS X, then let go of the mouse button. That will copy your entire FS2 folder to your OS X Desktop. The Freespace 2 folder is likely to be fairly large, so it'll probably take a few minutes to copy.

From there, try the instructions I posted before.

So I just completely reinstall the MediaVPs? I don't need to delete or move any of the seen files in the above screenshots?

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
Nope, there's nothing you have to delete or move. I guess you can delete the .7z files in your blueplanet folder if you want, since you've already extracted the .vp files out of them, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
So say I download everything from the MediaVPs page, where do I extract all of them to?
Do I download and extract the MediaVPs itself to the Freespace 2 folder and then everything else into the MediaVPs folder?

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
I don't know what you mean by "everything else", since everything on the MediaVPs page is part of the MediaVPs.

Extract them to your Freespace 2 folder. The .zip files from the MediaVPs page already have a mediavps_3612 folder in them, so the files should get put in the right spot, which is in a mediavps_3612 folder in your Freespace 2 folder. Just in case, after you're done downloading and extracting all of the MediaVPs files, could you attach screenshots of your Freespace 2 folder and your mediavps_3612 folder (which will get created when you extract the .zip files)? Then we can check that things are set up right.

EDIT: You can choose not to download MV_CB_ANI_1.7z and MV_CB_ANI_2.7z if you want. They're large files (meaning they take up space and download time) that won't make any difference for BP. Including them won't cause any problems, though.

Re: TROUBLESHOOTING - Pretty Black Screen
Good progress with the MediaVPs, almost there.

Is anything in the folder labeled mediavps_3612 (lowercase letters)?

To check this: starting from your first screenshot, click on "mediavps_3612" (lowercase) at the top of the screen. Does anything other than "MediaVPS_3612" appear on the right?

There should be three files there: mod.ini, FSU-MVP.bmp, and Readme.txt. If they're not there, download and extract MediaVPs_3612.zip (it's a small file) from the MediaVPs page again.

Besides that, the .vp files are in the C:\GOG Games\Freespace 2\mediavps_3612\MediaVPS_3612\ folder when they should be in the C:\GOG Games\Freespace 2\mediavps_3612\ folder. Take a look at the top of the screen in your first screenshot to get a sense of what I mean.

To move those files:

- Open two Windows Explorer windows that look like the one in your first screenshot.

- In one of those windows, click on "mediavps_3612" (lowercase) at the top of the screen.

- In the other window, click on "MV_Advanced.vp", then hold down the Shift key and click on "MV_Root.vp". All of the .vp files should now be selected.

- Right-click (or if you don't have a right-mouse button, hold down control and click) on any of the .vp files and select "Cut" from the menu that pops up.

- In the window that you changed to "mediavps_3612" (lowercase) before, right-click on the area on the right of the screen (not on any specific file) and select "Paste" from the menu that pops up.

Then post a new screenshot of your mediavps_3612 folder.

Could you post a screenshot of your mediavps_3612 (lowercase letters) folder? The screenshot you posted is your blueplanet folder.
