Nyctaeus, as much as I would like to, I'm no graphic artist of any kind. The main thing is that tiling though. If someone could redo that texture to something else that was designed for the ship...sadly, I'm not qualified for that job at all.

Ugly tiling, change that, screw everything else, tilerape is bad blah blah...

I heard this too many times. I also remember times, when this was actually standard of making models, so campaigns were offering other stuff like gameplay, storyline, mission design etc. Wardog posted also some tech entry to this. Nothing matters, but model he used because his PC cannot handle anything newer. Also remapping the model to UV standard requires new LODs, debris and whole reconversion. Plus making new diffuse, of course. IMHO doing that for model that old is pointless. The only thing that can be done here is to remodel it, and make new texture. Yes, this is Inferno model but noone in our team is actually willing to do it. I'm currently the only one active model artist for Inferno and other models have higher priority.

All I see here is just random ramble of bad texturing method. Another damn one! Nothing constructive, no serious suggestion how to improve current state of model... Nothing. Just another random "do something with it, tilemapping is bad" flame.

I assure you, if there is any way of improving this model available to Wardog, he would do something with it so please, spare us comments like that in the future. Tilemapping sucks, we all know it, you won't discover anything new in that matter.

Look, I'm not trying to start a fight. There was no flaming until you started flaming as a complaint about my supposed flaming. I already said I'm no kind of graphic artist. All I know it that this ship looks like something I would expect to see in an FS2 retail pre-release as a placeholder. There has to be a better way. I just don't know what exactly that is or how to do it, other than it should start with someone UV unwrapping the model. Even that I only know the name of the step and I don't know what exactly it entails. But seeing how this model isn't super detailed and greebly, it's not like the UV unwrap that guy did of the Nebulon-B Frigate over on the FotG boards. That one was nuts. I saw the final result and if I thought I was awed by people who could do that before, he just blew them out of the water. I want to know how he is still sane after that bit of work. But if you want to say I'm flaming for voicing and standing by my opinion of the vessel in question, and NEVER ONCE making any kind of personal attack, that's on you. Also, for the record, if it is well done, tiling doesn't necessarily suck. As I recall, Steve-O's ships as used in the original release of Blue Planet were tilemapped, but it was done quite skillfully, and I had no complaints. Now someone has come behind Steve-O, redone those models, UVed them, and custom textures have been made and they look even better than they started. But the original tiles didn't look bad.

First off, I think we need to calm down a bit.

Secondly, it seems no matter what we say here, wardog can't actually do anything because his PC doesn't have a graphics card capable of supporting FSO.

The only solution would be to acquire a graphics card made sometime in the past 10 years, pretty much any of which would support FSO and thus open the door to using the myriad of community assets instead of the few ancient retail-quality ones (which are almost universally bad). Now, I can't really see why that should be difficult at all, but I'm also not privy to wardog's financial situation and whatnot so I can't really say anything but suggest that be something that should be looked into - it shouldn't be that hard to get a working 2nd hand graphics card off someone for the price of a lunch, after all. I'd definitely suggest doing that if at all possible, especially if the rest of the PC is actually up to snuff. You're really missing out if you can't run FSO.

I will second that there is little value in anyone putting in effort to rework that specific version of the Vidar at this point short of a total remodel to bring it up to "FSO standard", which is a lot of work. That version is just too low poly to make anything out of, in my eyes. Lainey, you seem to be underestimating the amount of work/effort it is to UVmap and make a decent texture for even a simple model (it's mostly in the texture, in this case). Understandable if you haven't tried it yourself, I suppose, but there is a reason why a lot of models never get past the modelling stage, if you've paid any attention to the general freespace modding forum. Long story short, the likelihood of anyone actually picking this up and "fixing" it is basically nonexistent, unless wardog could do it himself, which, for aforementioned reasons, appears to be out of the picture.

Also, Steve-O's original models used a mix of UVmapped areas and tilemaps, and a lot of them, which is why they looked passable. The main problem with doing things that way is the sheer number of textures they used, which caused significant performance issues (people with fairly powerful PCs getting single-digit FPS was common when multiple were on screen, it was that bad). I won't exactly call those a good use of tilemaps. In many ways they sucked a lot. :P

Ok, ouch on the massive numbers of textures thing with Steve-O's ships. As for the work to UV, I am not underestimating it. I know it's a big undertaking, and one I wish I could help with. Sadly, I am by no means any kind of graphic artist. My creative talents are more in the realm of writing. I never said it was something easy to do. Just that it should be done. As for the need to ditch the current model and redo it, you may be right on that. I just wish I could help more than to offer my opinion.

GTVA Techdata part 2: Galactic Terran Logistics ship Glorious



It didn't take long to prove that having large convoys on the frontlines isn't very effective. The original solutions to reducing the casualties were super-freighters and cargo-carrying warships, which made cargo transfers a nightmare. It was clear that a dedicated cargo-carrying warship was needed. Triton designs came out with the Glorious, which combined the carrying capacity of a larger freighter with the offensive capability of a medium corvette. The Glorious soon proved its efficency in both supplying warships as well as combating hostile forces head-on. Out of 20 ships that fought against the Shivan forces, only 2 were lost to combined cruiser and corvette strikes. Records go as far as taking down a Scylla-class, which was done on 18th February 2401. when the GTL Berlin stumbled upon a Shivan repair depot. There are currently 35 of these vessels in service, but GTVA command hopes to have at least 2 in each battlegroup by the end of 2402.

Before anyone starts anything about the textures, this is exactly what I wanted to have, as I was going for a dark, black and gray razzle dazzle like look, and this is exactly what I wanted, even if I could, I would not change this one. It indeed can be difficult to distinguish what and where the ship is based on the visuals, just like it was planned for actual US and RN warships, if you don't know what I'm talking about search up "razzle dazzle paint scheme" on google.

Actually, this one looks pretty cool to me, like it's armor plated. It honestly works quite well, IMO, and I have no complaints. And yeah, the eye kind of slides off of it.

First time when someone wanted his ship to be ugly :P

I'm surprised that this model works fine on retail. As far as I remember, it has something like 1,5k polygons. Looks stealthy for me. I like the idea of fast, stealth  logistics largeship. Jump in, deliver the payload and jump out scenario would work very well compared to extremly large and sluggish logistics as we know from Blue Planet.

It might appear fast, but in fact, its slow, some destroyers are actually faster than it, just like most of the utility ships (excluding super freighters and science cruisers), and all the cruisers and corvettes. But it does have Iceni-like jump drives, which are the reason why it has the reputation of a deadly warship.

GTVA Techdata part 3: Galactic Terran Destroyer Ryujin (Ex- EAD Ryujin)



The Ryujin is a fast assault carrier-destroyer developed by the Solaris systems to supplement the EAF's Tereus- and Lindos-class destroyers. The Ruyjin carries advanced EJH-12 engines, which produce enough thrust to propel the ship at 35 meters per second, which is the speed of slower corvettes and not far behind the cruisers. Ship's armament primarily consists of heavy anti-fighter weaponry, along with a few beam cannons shall it face a hostile warship. Ryujins were often used for depot raids and attacks on smaller and faster ships where a Darkness wouldn't stand a chance and the Lindos would be too much resources to deploy.
There are currently 12 Ryujin-class ships in service.

Got no comments on this one, just, does anyone know any other good image hosting site like the Photobucket? PB's incredibly buggy for some reason, it logs me off whenever I try uploading something. It takes like 10 minutes to actually show the image in the library, and when I try opening it, it either doesn't want to open, or opens for a brief amount of time before automatically returning to the library, its extremely irritating.

If your computer can handle 6,1k-poly models, I can provide you a mid-poly replacement for this one.

As for image hosting, you may try Tinypic. It's buggy as well, but it never removed me a single image and never caused additional problems. Broken captha is pretty funny. Whatever you type, things will proceed.

Pretty sure this is the mid-poly model, I've got no idea where I got it from, but it works well in FSO, and not in retail.
I'll try Tinypic later on, thanks for the suggestion.

EDIT: Actually, yeah, its got 5591 polys, but works well nonetheless.

It's GTD Atropos released by Woolie Wool some time ago. It's returreted and retextured ITD Ryujin from OTT modeldump. We used it in Inferno, but it was later replaced by torpedo destroyer with different model.

It's GTD Atropos released by Woolie Wool some time ago. It's returreted and retextured ITD Ryujin from OTT modeldump. We used it in Inferno, but it was later replaced by torpedo destroyer with different model.

Got it, but I'd personally prefer to use the current model just because its got worse turret coverage, and I don't want it too well defended, after all, you're supposed to see a few of them get overrun by bomber swarms. But I do already have some ideas with which I could use the model you sent me, time for another special ship that I can't even test but at least it will be available for when I get back to work!

GTG Avila: Roger that Warspite, what's the 4th composed of?
GTCv Warspite: One moment please... its... its 17 freighters, 9 transports and 5 Cruisers along with fighter escorts. When you arrive there try sticking with them until you reach the Enterprise, they should be able to fix you right up.
GTG Avila: Alright, thanks. We have overclocked the drives, they should be operational in a minute... that is, if we don't blow up by then.
Captain: Well why the hell don't we jump there as well, huh Warspite?
GTCv Warspite: Its too risky, we can't risk loosing an entire cargo group by drawing a Shivan ounslaught there.
Captain: Oh, so you want us to die alone here! Why the hell did I even sign on for this crap... Listen to me goddamn it! Its 5 bloody cruisers over there, how the goddamn hell are Shivans going to destroy that, but not the 3 goddamn destroyers you're sending here?!
GTCv Warspite: Can you just relax, we'll be alright here!

Captain: Helm, move us away from the Warspite, gunnery control bring all guns facing our broadsides.
Gunner: Captain, all our guns are down, we have no way of defending ourselves other than the Warspite.

Captain: Enter the coordinates of the 4th, we're going there.

*A loud explosion*
Captain: What the hell is that, tell me!

Captain: Cut that crap and tell me what the hell is going on!
Helm: Engines are out, lighting up the jump drives seems to have destroy-
GTCv Warspite: May I ask what are you doing back there, you're out of our gun range!
Captain: This is your fault Warspite! Our engines are gone and the Shivans are swarming us! Tell that goddamn captain of that goddamn destroyer that he is late. I hope to see you in hell! Gunnery control, give orders to blow up the charge magazines!
Gunner: Teams A and D, set the charges to overload, and run towards the escape pods as fast as you can!
Captain: Everyone out of this goddamn bridge head for the escape pods, the ship is gone and there is nothing we can do now!
Helm: Sir we have an incoming subspace signature, its the Harrier! Oh, it seems like we also have a Shivan Moloch of to our port, he's closing in on us!
Captain: Helm, can you get any sort of propulsion here?
Helm: We might be able to move with thrusters, but I doubt we can reach any speed with them.
Captain: Activate all the thrusters and vector us towards the Moloch, we're going to ram the bastards.
Helm: Roger that sir, all power to thrusters!
*A chain of explosions*
Helm: Captain, hull integrity is going down rapidly! Our engine compartment just blew up, we have lost the thrusters as well!

Anyway sounds plausable. As for the model, you can remove some turrets if you want to in PCS2. Just remember to rename remaining turrets. If you want to keep it this way, it may work as refit of classic Ryujin used by some special forces or something like that.
