The swarm missiles are smaller than the other missiles and don't fit on the hardpoints well. Theyt really need to be attached to a rack of some sort in groups.

Well, FRAPS is working perfectly. I don't know which version you used. But, FRAPS record perfectly OpenAL. I think your problem is elsewhere.

one question: what actually did become of microspace?

It's on halt due to technical limitations.

Due to the lack of a material system in FS2 we were not  able to create the levels we wanted. At least not at the quality level we aimed for.
No light baking possible, collision issues, lack of tools to create effects etc.

The interface design would have been the last big problem.

So we took a look at the UDK, but in the end it would have been way too much work for our tiny team.
With the current advances of FSO I would say there is still a chance we might continue the project.

Thing is that this variant, at least on the show I did see this on in the History Channel, would be favored acting like a gigantic F-14, tossing AAMs everywhere.
But, this is the Wings mod, it could do that with ASMs if it was used.
