Re: A celebration of Freespace
Double post for great justice!

One can get pretty pics out of WCS data.

It's just a shame that one has to play WCS to get to it. I really need to play more of it to write a good critique of it, but so far? It's not going to be positive. Not with all the issues it has.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Where does everyone get all these amazing looking low orbit planets!

I wants them!

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Yeah, WCS really is a pretty bad campaign.  They should have done a lot fewer missions with a lot more variation.  Also a lot fewer dead Kilrathi since I always end up wondering just where they're getting enough fighters to have one man take down over twenty in a single mission and still have more in reserve.
17:37:02   Quanto: I want to have sexual intercourse with every space elf in existence
17:37:11   SpardaSon21: even the males?
17:37:22   Quanto: its not gay if its an elf

[21:51] <@Droid803> I now realize
[21:51] <@Droid803> this will be SLIIIIIGHTLY awkward
[21:51] <@Droid803> as this rich psychic girl will now be tsundere for a loli.
[21:51] <@Droid803> OH WELLL.

See what you're missing in #WoD and #Fsquest?

[07:57:32] <Caiaphas> inspired by HerraTohtori i built a supermaneuverable plane in ksp
[07:57:43] <Caiaphas> i just killed my pilots with a high-g maneuver
[07:58:19] <Caiaphas> apparently people can't take 20 gees for 5 continuous seconds
[08:00:11] <Caiaphas> the plane however performed admirably, and only crashed because it no longer had any guidance systems

The problem with Wing Commander Saga, and for me I think it's really unfortunate, is that every single aspect of it is to an exceptional standard except the gameplay. Which to me is the important part. But if you're a person who plays games more to have an experience than to play a game though, with story and such at the top, WCS will be very enjoyable.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
I think the problem with WCS is... Lack of imagination. I've never read books and played any games from this universe, but after I've played WCS I found it pretty simple. We're good human stable commonwealth fighting with evil space cats. The same as missions - boring and repetitious. Perhaps because WCS Team wanted to keep original "feel" of the universe, which is just too classic today. Just a theory, as I don't know this universe. I just know how old it is.

Otherwise, they made dozens of cool models and other stuff and WCS is just good-looking. I never finished the campaign, but I was stunned by quality of everything... Everything except the gameplay, like Lorric said.

I'm no expert on the subject, but I feel they captured the feel of the universe perfectly. And they always were going after the Wing Commander fanbase, not the Freespace one.

As for the Universe, first, did you ever check out the game manual this comes with? That thing is huge and full of fluff, it's a piece of art as far as game manuals go, as good as any "real" manual you'll find out there.

And for stability, well, I'd like to think the human race would be stable when they're facing annihilation, when they're facing this:
I love that scene. You can start about 20secs in and stop at 3mins in.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
The problem is the classic feel of the original universe after some time, is not that cool anymore. Look at FS, at the all the classic projects from 7-8 years like briliant Detelict or Homesick. Repeating schemes again and again. Now look at modern projects, like War in Heaven, Vassago's Dirge, Shadow Genesis, Bem Cavelgar... Original universe must evolve, or became boring. WCS is still what it was at the beginning.

That could have been in SC. But it's not. So close though.

Woot! WANT MOAR!

btw, is that model in the game to scale? I'd think it would be much bigger, iirc someone said that that some of the federation fighters are as large as a 747!

Re: A celebration of Freespace
It's not, but it's quite close. The Lancer should actually be nearly exactly the size of the 300i (Lancer is 23.6m in PCS2, vs 24m for the 300i). The Lancer was a tad smaller in that screenshot, I just did a quick and very approximative rescale from within the Cry Editor.

The Lancer is by far the smallest of the Federation fighters (Jackal/Kent is 43m).

How hard would it be to remake FS in CE3? I mean, we'd only need to rewrite everything, yes?

Those fighters are gorgeous (yes, I realize atmospheric vs space lighting models are subtly different)

Save your height maps, lads!

The DL of mod and shader as they are now. May be changed in the future, but not much. That's only 9 lines of shader added :p
