Yet another of my threads return from the grave...;)
The Zoid I was constructing (or should that be growing?) here:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,31435.0.html
Is now done. AS you can see, (s)he's a big one! Not to mention well armed:

Now someone needs to put that in Freespace against the Colossus.
Have it maul the Colossus to death.
-
Nice work  I've been following this one with interest since the first post :)
-
Cool.
Is it animated/animatable?

It is posable. Since I haven't figured out TS 6 animation tool, to do an animated sequnce, one would need to use muiltiple 'print-screen's, imported into PSP, compiled with anim-builder...
In short, yes. But with difficultly.
AS for mauling the Colossus, it's big, but not THAT big. With magnetic boots though, it could walk around on the Big C's hull;)
-
That's SW33T! Awesome scaling too. :P
-
the minute i saw the the very last pic (i clicked the last reply button) i went ZOIDS!!!!!
that looks pretty good, almost real.
-
this is good, extremely good
Quite impressive, dear sir :D
-
Lookin quite good there
-
Thanks for all the praise, people;)
I'll see about geting some more images, showing off it's pose-ability. Maybe with it's foot ON the VW...;7

I try:D Took ages geting all the parts shaped so that it (the zoid) could be posed any which way (within reason, I know how some people minds are) without bits overlapping.
Wonder if any of the Zoidian websites would be intrested, and what they would think...
-
What are you using to render ? The Mesh looks good but the render isn't too great.
-
I'd call that moderately armed, for a Zoid. Never liked the series much, but this is nice.
-
Never seen the series. The British comic kicked arse though.
-
I had a Stegosaurus zoid when I was a nipper.
-
This thread actually inspired me to pull down the comics from the cupboard and read them all again. Damn fine storyline there :)
-
That's excellent!

I'll admit it dosn't have a huge number of guns (five seperate weapon systems), but three of those are intended to be so big that most Zoids couldn't handle them. If fact, one of them is so big that it has to brace itself before it can fire the gun (it's mounted in the throat). And most Zoids IRCC only had 2-3 ranged weapon systems. (Leena's gunsniper is an exception!)
Remember, this thing is much bigger than most other zoids. I rekon roughly 50% larger than the stego Zoid (which I have in fact).
I actually enjoyed the series, personally. Almost wish they would sell them in a store locally...
@Roanoke: Modelled in TS6, Rendered in TS3.1 It was the only way to get the fog effect. TS6 claims to have fog effect, but I couldn't get it to work. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

Cool lookin zoid.

Some more screenies!
Sprinting:
This one was rendered in TS3.1 I've started using a lighter coloured fog.
And the same shot (pretty much) in TS6. The screenies might also be affected by the format I'm saving them in (jpg at 25% compression, though I've started using DDS for on my HD)
Same pose, diffrent angle.
DUCK!
Phew, that was close!
Return fire (with the BIG gun;) Okay, so the barrel is not that big, but it is long, and VERY powerful (one step below CPC)) Note the straight neck and all four legs braced on ground.

Looks great Raptor :)

I dunno about the bigger part; only looks to be maybe half again the size of the Liger, 'bout the size of that mammoth or some of the dinosaur ones. Then again, maybe this is what's referred to as "Continuity and Production Errors" over the course of the show, and the image in my mind of Van leaning against the Liger's foot might be an aberration.
Maybe it's just that when Zoids go the gunfire route, they tend to do it in massive overkill style, and so yours seems to have kind of sat down between two stools in comparison. It is clearly meant to do the majority of its fighting with its weapons systems rather then hand-to-hand, but it isn't incredibly overarmed to the point it's almost immobile.

TV shows do seem to be unable to keep things in proportion sometimes don't they? For the sizing I was refering to the model kits, rather than the shows. And of couse how big is Van?
Having said that, I will double check my sizing. Although I don't have any other Zoid models on the PC, I did find some stats for various ones (which are borne out by the kits) so I should be able to get a good idea of it's true size...
And another thing that bugs me sometimes: quite often we see the pilots climb out of the cockpits and drop to the ground, like it was only a few feet off the ground. But IRCC, most of the shots implied that the cockpit was like three stories up...:nervous:
...
...a fall from that hight would be like being hit by car doing 60mph...:shaking:

Hmmm, only one that I know of that does that is the Dibison. But then again I'm not that ofa'e with all the possible zoids. I've only seen the dubbed anime (CC,GF and NC0).
I guess this would be classed as a 'Highly Mobile Fire Support' type rather than 'Sit Still & Let Rip' type. Though don't rule out those hind legs. They could give a nasty kick;7

VRay (http://www.chaosgroup.com/software/vray/)
Pretty much the best free render avaliable at the moment.

Ah, I know. That bugged me. The other thing was the pilots occasionally not wearing seat restraints and then not getting smacked around the inside of the cockpit and knocked senseless if not killed for their stupidity...

Plus the fact that nearly every single one of the core characters is listed as being a teenager![/b]
I mean, I know the japs like their anime characters to be young, but would you let YOUR 15-year old son charge around the world in a huge war machine weighing in at over 80 tonnes?
-
hey, some teenagers can handle responsibility and authority.
of course most can't.
and anyway, teenagers are more photogenic than old people (ie anyone over the age of... let's see, how old am I?... twenty.)
that's a pretty cool zoid you got there btw.

[color=66ff00]So you won't be photogenic when you're 21?
Regret?

nah nah, i'm the average, the world revolves around me. photogenic is better than me. so when i'm 21, anyone younger than me will still be photogenic, and anyone older than me will be... old. just old.
-
Post pics or retract! :p
Although I'm so unphotogenic that I broke two cameras as a baby by doing nothing more than appearing on them. :p

At least you know they're safe. Wreaking apocalyptic gun-death havok with thousands of civillian casualties, true, but they won't get mugged coming from the shops.

Bah, that's no fun. Nor does it massage my ego as much. :p
*checks* It's actually down.
However, my stalking skills have been getting rusty, so after about 15-30 min. I found it anyway. ;) Good practice :p However I was also reminded of this strange resemblance...
(And wow have I derailed this thread)

No, he's not a Cylon. a REAL Cylon is a seven foot tall machine with shiny silver plating and horozontial sweeping red eye;)

Ya' think?
Well, back on topic...
New pic, sizing the Hadron(Can't think of any better name. It IS based on a Hadrosaur...:nervous: If you can think of anything better PLEASE let me know)
The blocks are stand ins for three of the zoid kits I own. They, the Hadron, and the little man are ALL to scale.
So my first guess was about right. It's not too tall, but it is long...
And older people are not nessicarly less photogenic. There was talk after her latest film that Jane Semour(SP?) could pe approched by playboy(!), and she's what? mid-fourties?

Change 'Civilian' to 'Military' and/or 'Zoid' and you would have Raven's favorite hobbie...

Render it kicking Colossus ass!!

It looks more Iguanodontid than Hardosaur like...:nervous:
Err... good model notheless :)

Iguandon, Hadrosaur... all basically the same shape right. Just some hadras had funny crests.

Tried that. The Colossus is just too big. Any render with the whole of the Colossus would only show this Zoid as a tiny speck.
As compensation...

A another angle, showing how the feet have been angled to match the hull.
I might start posting the fanfic I've been writing that features this zoid here, maybe. Depends if anyone would be willing to check my grammer, spelling and content (have to keep it at 16+ level, if not lower.)

Perhaps something like Iguar instead of hadron? I did a double take skimming and went "He named his zoid WHAT?"

Now thats much better! Mind if I use that (or something very close) from now on;)
Now how to do you pronouce that? (I-gar?)
I did say it (hadron) was a temporay name:nervous:

Go ahead. I was thinking ig-u-ar or ig-uar.

I'd say it'd probably be Ig-wahr. That's how I'd pronounce it anyway.

I think'll take you up on that. I asked a couple of old friends to check my content rating (+review). One said they'd have a look. Haven't heard back yet...
...
... the worring thing is that I written about 9 more chapters worth since then...:nervous: (sent her first 7 plus half of 8, now on chapter 16, with each aimed at about 2K-2.5k words)
Should I post here in thread, or use PM's?

People keep forgetting how big the Colossus actually is. Remember that the Colossus is actually longer than the Sath then look at this.
Those tiny little things in the corner include the Empire State Building, The Eiffel Tower and the CN tower in Toronto.
Pictures as some will have guessed are from Jeff Russell's (http://www.merzo.net/) excellent website.

:bump: Yea I know. Just thought you would all like to know I've started posting my fanfiction story which will feature thsi creation at some point here:

Looks bloody ugly there, though, does el Satho.
-
Seeing as how that's probably a gamma-adjusted modelview pic rather than a render I'm not surprised.
-
I was thinking of the blockiness, myself.
-
Yeah but you don't usually see that cause the Sath is big and space is black same as the sath.
In a render it probably wouldn't be as noticable. Of course if you're offering to hi-poly it I'm not going to complain :D
*Watches Aldo run screaming from the thread* :D

Link no worky. Tells me I need to log in, seems to be to a secure section of the site; when I do log in, it gives me an error, specifically "An exception has occured while processing your request. Please alert site admin."
Being familar with how well the reporting system for TOS violations works there, I'm not going to bother with the admins...

Frack. Sorry, my fault. :snipe:
Link updated. Should work right now.

Darn, I've just learned that 'Iguan' is already in use!
Hmm, Iganer, Igunar... (any help would be appreciated!)
And did the fixed link work?
-
You didn't notice my wildly oscillating reviews? :p
-
(smacks head for not noticing the same username) So sorry, didn't realise it was you:dizzy: I was expecting people on HLP to post their reviews here.
Now reached chapter 20 BTW. 32 more written, several more to write. Though those 32 might be condensed down a bit (I get the feeling that their a bit short)
For a laugh, I decided to get a comparison shot:
The original pencil sketch (really should get that reloaded. That image is a terrible size)
The model, from the same angle with the same pose (or as near as I can make it)
Still need help with name. (root word = Iguanodon.)
Iguaner...
Iguner...
Iguanoderus...
Interestingly, there is a 'Iguanid' in Word 2000's dictonary:wtf:
-
Okay, just a little update.
New name, thanks to my stories beta-reader: Iguanosaur
And a new main turret, when I realised that the old one would be simply impractical.

The change was main due to the fact that a) 195mm vulcans are just silly & b) they would only have had 224 rounds a peice!
I'll get some more images done later...
And BTW, where did the list of smiles go!

Hmm, no new replies...

Niether. It's a ZOID, of my own design to boot.
As an aside, I've recently done some pencil sketches of scenes+things that occur/appear in the story. May post those as well...

Well, I wasn't suggesting it was a direct rip, I was just asking where the inspiration came from. Now I know. And I made myself look stupid. Again.

yes, yes... what you've come up with is all much more reasonable. :D
At any rate, I think it looks pretty cool.

Oh, you've still got a long way to go to top that list around here. Look around for a guy posting in orange text for a perfect example of what making a fool of yourself actually looks like :p
My question relating to this is where exactly do zoids hail from? I know they've got some kind of background, but I can't honestly remember if it was a TV show, a videogame, or just a bunch of random assemble-yourself kits that they used to sell in toy stores. Not to deminish the quality of this thread's topic at all, I just don't know where the idea originated from.

IIRC, they started out simply as a sety of snap-together toys in Japan. Quite cool actually, since they don't require glue or paint. Course you can repaint them if you wish...
Later on the Japanise created a trio of anime seris to go along with the models, which were later on translated across to the US. There also have been the odd game, comics, plus one or two other bits that I can't remember...
So they stared as kits, but things kid of grew from there. I think.
BTW, work on hostile is coming along... be afraid...
-
i have to agree with everybody here. That is a anwesome looking zoid.
-
Now the question is...who'll pilot it? :P
This isn't a close-combat thing, so I'm going to hazard a guess that it's either Leena or Stroller.

Stratch built. Obviously I didn't invest nearly as must time and effort into this as I did the zoid, but then this Cerberus (Zoid Enhanced Mark 2 version) is a much simpler thing to make...
I really like how the sensor eye came out. Took seven local lights and an almost flat translucent sphere to do it, but the effect is just about right...

It does have that air of menace, dosn't it?

still needs more detail really. How about some ammo belts for the guns ?
-
still needs more detail really. How about some ammo belts for the guns ?
Yea, I was having trouble thinking of details for this, since the original images of the Cerberus are very low quality. Not sure about ammo feeds. The original didn't have them; I expect the feed would be internal...
I'll need to think about it... and see if I get time... lots of other things gonig on right now...

Can't remember the last time I've been on these forums but after coming back to see what's new, I come across this thread. I must say that model is pretty damn well impressive. While not as big as say a "Colossus," I could actually picture a fleet deploying thousands of those things at other vessels in space. It would be pretty neat to see a bunch of these zoids latch on to a Colussus's hull and render all it's weapons useless... Much like those bee-like machines in the Matrix... I could also see them being used planetside of course, I mean my God, the guns on the back of that thing are as big as the rail guns that the Germans used in WW I and II. Anyway, congratulations on finishing it.

You should render a video clip of your zoid in action. Just seeing it's limbs moving as it's running across terrain would be cool. Excellent work, I'll admit I'm a bit jealous I can't do stuff like this.

I would, except the only way I know how do so (ATM) is to use an ANI file, and I doubt that would work. I can't figure out TS's animation tool... :(
Of course, if someone could tell me how to do other types of animation (Like GIFs), and their limits... :nervous:
