I have decided to offer a Freespace 2 full version download once again. It is a fully functional copy with all of the vp files, RARed up because I can make it smaller that way. It is 100% multiplayer ready as it is packaged with all valid multiplayer missions. Please dont broadcast this link on any download forums, as it is intended only for people who need the game. If there is any excessive bandwidth usage I will shut the link down. Happy gaming.

Damn. I got like a 240mb basic .rar for people just wanting to get started, but if your is NEW-Multi ready, let me know the best low usage time and I'll DL it for storage and pass it out as needed (I always run into people asking about the game but when they hear about needing more files that kills interest sometimes...

I don't know I never opened it, but so far two of my co-woirkers told me it runs fine and they can play. Only one went all out and added SCp to it.
So I kept it as an emergency transfer file for a gamer who just wants it "NOW". Not like I need it I got like 5 full copies of all the disks ;) And to think my work was just gonna shred them as waste...

Hi, just wanna say thank you for putting it up for download kind sir :nod:. This game looks sweet, I like X-Wing alliance so I should like this too :). Lucky for me I found this post, because the download at www.freespacezone.com aint working.

Okay heh I downloaded the movies, all superior quality to the ones I had - though one thing bugs me.
Are the end parts supposed to be named "endprt2a" and "endprt2b" or as they are - "endpart2a" and "endpart2b" - or is there no difference?
Bleh, I remember there being issues with this some longish time ago.

Yeah, these movies are much better than the crappy ones I had before. That server is quite fast too; I very rarely get sustained speeds of over 700k/sec.
The movie filenames are correct. I checked on my third CD and that's what they are called there.

The movies are named correctly. And since their trigger (and intro's) is hardcoded you can't change them either. :)

1) remember, i've had mine up for a while... just they've been down during the time the server was down.
2) so far I think i'm the only one hosting all three full ISOs, right? like, if someone's CD2 breaks, they can just download it or something.
even if i'm not, the more redundancy we have, the better, right? :)

I agree about redundancy and that you were first but the other two ISO downloads are both all three ISOs (I'm refering to ZmaN's FTP and Freespacezone which ironically enough are both temporarily down at the moment). :)
MP's download isn't the ISOs and misses stuff like the mve versions of the movies. But if you're only playing FS2_Open it's probably the best one to get. :)
I just find it funny that although it's been over a year since swooh went down it's only in the last few months that about 4 different ways to download the game have appeared :)

naaa swooh went down less than a year ago. i remember pulling the plug on it. i can get you an exact date, but i'm sure it was less than a year :nod:

Are we allowed to pimp the FS2 download everywhere we can or should we keep it secret to preserve bandwidth like we have to with MatthewPapa's download?

My friend downloaded all the files, and he says they are corrupted. I dunno if a re-download would solve the problem, as I already have FS2 and can't bother to download all that and test them out.

well the download has worked fine for pleanty of others so my suggestion would be to retry downloading the files. it probably just got a little screwed up on the way to your friends computer, things like that happen every so often on the www

should we perhaps provide MD5 checksums for all our downloads?

I'd suggest using Par2 instead of MD5. With a couple of extra parity files you could repair minor corruption without forcing the user to download the entire archive again.

I just downloaded one of the ISOs at an average of 700 Kilobytes per second. took about 13 minutes.

Explaination of what a par file is here (http://www.par2.net/) and a link to QuickPar (http://www.quickpar.org.uk/index.htm) the best program for making and using them.
Par2 files are quite small (~10 to 50Kb) but in addition to allowing you to check the integrity of the file or files (You can check multiple files with a single par2 file) you can make files which allow you to repair damage.
Par2 is pretty much the way almost every large binary on Usenet is verified since you have a large number of files and a good possibility of one or more of them being corrupt there.
If you can spare the bandwidth for redownloads and the users don't mind then it's hardly worth it though :) That said anyone on a 56k connection would probably prefer to download a few 1 to 10MB par files than the entire 700MB iso :)
If you want I could probably knock up a bunch of Par files and a guide to using them for you.

without reading all the explanations, i'm assuming it's kind of like RAR archives, right? where the file's split into a number of smaller files, based on the size of the archive?

The file you're protecting can be in whatever form you want so you wouldn't have to touch the .iso files at all.
In addition to the .iso you put up a few (relatively small) extra files. The first of these is the Filename.par2 file which when you double click on it analyses the .iso and tells you how many blocks it needs to repair it. The repair files are also generated ahead of time from an uncorrupted .iso and will look something like this
Filename+01.par2
Filename+02.par2
Filename+04.par2
Filename+08.par2
Filename+08.par2
Filename+08.par2
Filename+08.par2
The number following the plus sign is the number of blocks that par file will repair. The idea is that you download only the files you need to add up to the number of blocks you need to repair. If I'd download the .Iso and it told me that it needed 10 blocks to repair I'd download one of the +08.par2 files and the +02.par2 file. When I double click on either of these quickpar runs and repairs the .iso for me.
The repair files vary in size from about 1Meg to about 10MB depending on how many of them you want. For about 3-4 Megs of space on your server you could probably repair most errors since most of them are probably just a few KBs of corruption anyway.

I've never tried Par2 with anything the size of an ISO but I have managed to repair someone's corrupt VPs from the FTP using them and we're talking about something similar in size there.

Hello,
I am new to this forum, but a fan of this game and I really appreciate the hard work you guys have done to make a great game even better. But I have a problem with the movies that I downloaded on this thread. Either I am not putting them in the proper place or something else, but each time a movie is supposed to play, the game goes back to windows, and in the top left corner of the screen an extremely tiny movie begins to play. I do not know if anyone has asked or answered this question, but how can I fix this? Thank you for your time.

This is a relatively recent problem that seems to be tied to the latest divx codecs. If you can roll back your codecs that would in theory fix it, but that's much easier said than done. Otherwise it's a known bug that's being worked on.

Yep Divx 6 is the problem. For the moment the only solution is to roll back to divx 5.x.
No one is able to figure out at the moment why divx is misbehaving when every other codec works fine.

Even if I maintained an average of 5kb/sec, it'd take 2 days to download the main archive (forget the ISOs!) on my 56k. And as that's billed per second, it'd be cheaper to buy most games! Except that FS2 goes for $100-200 most places... :eek2:

bandwidth usage just spiked from 200 gb to 350, im shutting the download down because it must have gotten posted somewhere really popular. The download will be back up at the end of the month.

the full version?...all i see are the "disc1, disc2, dis3" download links:wtf:
at MP's server there was single zip with retail fs2 content...with 56k it's more practical that i continue the dowload (already spend 40hrs and not in one session either)

Is there any chance the repack download could come back, maybe with password protection or some kind of script to stop SA members from downloading it?
Failing that, is there a way I could get someone to PM me a link to the .torrent? I'd much rather be giving out one physical CD to new players than three.... or six, including FS1 and ST.

i got my fso to work but, i see white squares in the derelict campaghn...i cant mantis, cause i suspect i would be sent to another build and the build im currently using is apparently the only one that doesnt kill my PC's memory.

I got the ISOs today and try installing FS2 but it died on the thrid disc something about a tango tangent or something i am too tired to quite remember
anyone got any tips??

That's the second time I've heard of someone having a problem with disk 3. Not good.
In the meanwhile run a limited install. Install everything except the 2nd and 3rd sets of command briefing animations. Then try to copy tango2_fs2.vp and tango3_fs2.vp from CD3 to your freespace2 folder manually. You can leave tangoB_fs2.vp exactly where it is.

Hey MP, maybe you can password protect the download and pm the password to the people who need it the most, and that might stop the whole bandwidth usage problem :).

yeah i've heard that too. i'll recreate the ISO of disk 3 tomorrow, and re-upload it.
for the meantime, we've taken the ISOs offline. people were abusing. for a while we were sitting at 5 Mbit constant... same problem Matthew's having. they'll go up later on, or if someone needs them, they can PM me.

well mirror 1 should have unlimited bandwidth, cept right now its down because credit card maxed out and couldnt pay the website bill. i payed them yesterday, but ill have to see if i have to reupload them, btw if you want freespace 1 and ST expansion for it, you can get it off my mirror, ill give you the link as soon as i get the mirror back up

I recently played a bit of the Babylon Project and I enjoyed quite a bit
but I wanted to play freespace 1 or 2 again and cannot find any copies around until I saw your

I downloaded Freespace 2 Disc 1 2 3 and they appear as Iso files which they were recognised as Winimage files or soemthing.

it wont work for me :( i used to be ranked "captain" played years ago and recently found out u can play again! i lost my copy of the game but when i try and download it, it says:
Not Found
The requested URL /Freespace 2.rar was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

That blows: I own the original disks, but my video conversion skills are poor. If you want to know if someone posted the link somewhere, change it slightly and PM it to people. At least passers-by and crawlers won't pick it up then.

You have two choices. I would do both if I were you.
1) You can burn the ISOs to CDs if you have a CD Burner. Just choose the burn image option in whatever software you use.
2) You can try mounting them. When you mount an ISO file your computer will act as though it had an extra CD drive and the ISO was the CD you've inserted into it. A program like Daemon Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/) will allow you to mount the files. Nero also has mounting software included.
Personally I would mount the files, install and try the game (installation is most likely quicker from a mounted ISO than from a real CD drive). If everything worked I'd then burn a copy for backup.

Do the CDs work at all? Cause if they do you can always try the HotU version and then copy the missing VP files off of CD2 and 3.

You do not need to burn those ISO files. Google and downlown Daemon Tools, install. This is a tool designed to trick Windows into beliving there is more hardware connected then actully is, and allows you to mount ISO/Cue files onto it and install.
If you have errors installing this way, please detail them and I'll try to help.

In other word why didn't it work? If you give us a proper error report it might turn out to be something silly that is causing the problem.

Probably not. It keeps getting posted to places like SomethingAwful which results in MP using up all his bandwidth.

The links are on warez sites, the guy posted the links to said warez sites with downloads directed at the links he originally posted.
So far we know only Pappa is getting his posted on SA, though it could be that AT links were also there as well.

I'm relieved I'm not theonly one for whom the links don't work. I've been trying to get the avi versions of the cutscenes forever but the links won't ever work. Someone should post new ones or something.

I've downloaded the Freespace2 images from the Freespacezone website and when I first opened those, they are in a .bin format and there's no .cue file for me to burn directly to the CD, so therefore I have to convert it into a .iso format using a program called UltraISO. My concern is whenever I try to convert that, I'm still prone for checksum errors even though I converted the .bin images into .iso images.
Has anyone tried this method before and experienced any problems? btw, I currently use Nero to burn all my data images.

When I've been in a similar situation I've simply copied a .cue from another data CD and edited to change the filename it points to. Never had a problem with doing that before. Maybe I just got lucky though :)

don't convert the bin files at all. i suggest using alcohol 120% (a virtual cd drive program) to open the file, its way better than daemon tools. no need for messing around with the original files ;)

ahh thanks for that Zman, i seem to be able to access it now. So once I get the cutscenes I unzip them to my FS2 folder (the HotU CD rip) and I basically have a full working Freespace 2 with the cutscenes? I think the music and speech has already been added to the HotU rip (? cos I can hear it in the tutorial briefings....

yep, thats it! just unzip them into Games/Freespace2 and your good.
The FS1 Cutscenes must be put into your port mod folder otherwise they conflict with the FS2 cutscenes...

When my computer is off, my FTP gets shut down. My parents dont let me leave it on. Yeah its usually on between 10 AM and 10 PM but we went to NYC yesterday for the day so it wasnt up....
Just keep trying, my computer should be up all day today. I believe i did see your accessing being logged by serv-u when i was shutting my computer off.

I'm working on downloading from here. This isn't the gimped HoTU version is it? My friend gave me images of a 3-cd version, and installed it a while ago, but apparently since then I deleted the images to save space. I just realised a few days ago when trying to play it with the updated versions that I don't have cutscenes.

No this is the full retail version, the three cd's version (in disk images). All you need to do then is burn the images to CD's or mount them on your HDD using Daemon tools or the like.
If your after just the movies though, there are other sites that host just these in AVI format, search the site for cutscenes/movies and somewhere you will find a link to them in some thread or another.

If I had the regular retail version, then why didn't it put any of the cutscenes on my hard drive, or is the regular install not normally do that? Too much space needed? Just curious...

Too much space, especially when you require the CDs to play retail anyway.
As for the HotU install although the cutscenes are missing when it was compiled you couldn't play the MVE cutscenes in FS2_Open anyway and playing FS2_Open was the main reason for getting it so they would have just been a waste of space even if Underdog had been willing to let me upload them in the first place.
