Welcome to the third edition of the Hard Light Productions website! It is the product of the entire community’s collaboration, months of preparation, and many hours of staff work. We’ve put in a lot of effort to bring you a whole array of new features – let’s take a minute to explain some of them to you.
Firstly, the new domain (http://www.hard-light.net): www.hard-light.net! This domain belongs to us and we have moved the entire site over from GameSpy: home page, forums, Wiki, and even an archived copy of the old vBulletin. (You can see links to these in the box above: they’re all part of the “HLP Network”.) Please update your bookmarks!
Secondly, the new forums (http://www.hard-light.net/forums): as you can see, we’ve imported every single post and thread over here. Your old logins and passwords should all be intact too. If you find that they’re not, email any of the admins and we’ll sort things out with you.
Thirdly, the new BitTorrent Tracker (http://www.hard-light.net/tracker): this is how we will be handling all of HLP’s downloads from now on. If you have questions about how the BitTorrent system works, that leads me to...
Fourthly, the new staff! We’re pleased to have Mr. Fury aboard as our newest full-time staff member. He’s been a pillar of the community and we’re glad to make him part of the team. Congratulations to him! His speciality will be the BitTorrent Tracker, so consult him (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,121.0.html) if you have any questions about BitTorrents, making them work, what they need to be used for, or other BT-related stuff.
Fifthly, the new webring: you can see it up above there. It's pretty self-explanatory - have a go at accessing other sites through it! We're happy to be encouraging community integration and communication by publicising the hangouts of other FreeSpace fans - if you'd like to be a part of the webring and have the bar on your side too, just contact the staff and we'll arrange it.
There’s more to see, but that’s a whole bunch of the changes right there. Other ones, we’re going to let you discover them for yourselves. If you have any questions, please refer to the newly published Frequently Asked Questions (http://www.hard-light.net/category_show_indx.php?cat=74) specifically dealing with our new home. If you have any further questions that aren’t answered in the FAQ, feel free to ask us here and we’ll add them to the FAQ.
That’s enough from us. We’re really excited about getting settled into our new home – we hope you enjoy it too and get heaps out of it. Again, welcome to HLP!
Regards,
(http://www.hard-light.net/staff/setekh/welcome_hlpstaff.jpg)
Since lots of people are asking (with some silly excuse about the FAQ not being accessible... sheesh! :p), to get the quick-reply box to show, change the setting in your forum profile. // Sandwich
Also, a note to all project leaders: before shutting down the old forums, we requested that all project leaders would submit a list of members who should have access to their respective project internal forums. Unfortunately, this went largely unnoticed by majority of the project leaders. Those hosted projects now only have their forum moderators granted access to their respective internal forums. Project leaders: please post a list of members who should have access to your project's internal forums to the Hosted Sites Support Forum (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,22.0.html).

RAWR!
FIRST!
-
Nicely done!
I like it. :D
-
nice to be here. And on a unrelated note, I have an announcement of my own.
-
Yeah baby, we're back! :D
Edit: Son of a *****, my sig is teh br0ken!
-
Swankay! :)
I miss the quick reply box a little bit though :(
Edit: Oh, and apparently I'm not authorised to view the FAQ :wtf: :p
-
Go to your preferences, and choose look and layout preferences - there's an option to turn it on. :)
-
Woah really nice
-
Swankay! :)
I miss the quick reply box a little bit though :(
Edit: Oh, and apparently I'm not authorised to view the FAQ :wtf: :p
Silly wabbit! Look in your forum profile, and adjust all the settings there to your hearts content! ;)
-
No seriously, I can't read the FAQ either :P
-
Man, it's good to be back. ;)
-
By the way, don't know if you're aware but the old page is just showing a 'Not Found' error atm for me, which means it's going to be a quiet night ;)
Gonna take me a while to learn my way around this, but it seems awesome :D
EDIT : Ignore me, my link was straight to the Forums, the main site redirects.
-
The Hard-Light.net section of the FAQ seems to be having permission issues. I can access the rest of the FAQ though. According to the main FAQ page, the hard-light.net catagory is empty anyway.
-
SWEET! FORUM BUM RUSH! :D
Hey, two things - one, where did the quick reply go? And two, what is Grognards only? Meforgets.
Great to be back guys! :D
Oh, and one more thing, what does this new hosting do for hosting projects? Can you guys host projects again? :)
-
See earlier in the thread about quick reply, and if you can see Grognards then it's not just the FAQ that is having one or two permission birthing pains ;)
-
Sweet mother of .... guys, is there any way to turn the quick reply on by default? If not, this could get repetative.
-
You can enable quick reply in your profile, UT. :)
-
Thanks :D What about the hosting?
(You have no idea how much I'm flipping out over this! :D)
-
No prob, UT. ;)
Oh, and one more thing, what does this new hosting do for hosting projects? Can you guys host projects again? :)
This is a distinct possibility.
-
Dude.........Great job with the modifications (jaw hangs down a mile wide)
-
Ah, it's nice to see someone fixed the FAQ so quickly.
-
Oh, and that map thingy at the bottom is cool as anything :D
-
Argh! You changed everything again!!! :shaking:
-
Suuuuhh-weeeet.
Smells like a new car in here.
New domain, new servers ....who's paying for all that spiffy new stuff ?
-
No prob, UT. ;)
Oh, and one more thing, what does this new hosting do for hosting projects? Can you guys host projects again? :)
This is a distinct possibility.
*signs soul off on dotted line*
-
Frea-kin AWESOME!
I knew you guys were up to something. :D
EDIT: Christmas came early!!!!
-
I thought something was amiss when I googled "Hard Light Forums" and Gamespy came up with a "not found" error...:D
-
Oh... does this mean high traffic will cause site outages? That would suck. :(
For everything else, I'll pick it up as I go along, but it doesn't look bad so far! Time to head over to Grognards and see what the hosting status is...
-
Oh, and that map thingy at the bottom is cool as anything :D
Glad you like it. ;) Just wait until it updates (it's once a day) with all the data from you guys. ;)
-
Ah, it's nice to see someone fixed the FAQ so quickly.
Thank Styxx for that. And blame me for it needing to be fixed. ;) I made the whole FAQ... and forgot to make it public-viewable. :D
New domain, new servers ....who's paying for all that spiffy new stuff ?
Staff. Though there are specifics to it that... are a little tricky to explain. I'll let Sandwich handle that if he wants to.
*signs soul off on dotted line*
We'll talk. :D
-
Finally! I was getting tired of hanging around the Anandtech forums all the time. :p The new layout looks great for the most part. Great work. Things appear to be loading very slowly at the moment though and a few small features from the old setup are missing. And I have to say I liked the old font much better. :p
-
Regarding the domain/server... *deep breath*
In my previous job, the company leased a server dedicated to the company and the sites the company would host. When I left for another job, I departed on good terms. I also had a deal with my (now ex-) boss that I'd maintain a few of the client sites we had going, in return for "free" hosting for HLP - "free" meaning that after costs (see below), any income from the advertisements would go to him. He agreed. :)
The server we're on is in a server farm of 1&1, pretty much the largest hosting company in the world. It's based in Germany. Before we invaded moved here, the server was getting about 20-30Gb of traffic a month. Now, we have NO idea how much traffic HLP uses in that regard, but I think that we should be able to make do with the remaining 720-730Gb/month left. ;) :D
As for the domain, that we're paying for, flat out. It's not all that expensive, tho, but still.
Soooo... I'm not allowed to encourage you to click on banners to artificially generate clicks, but I will encourage you not to hesitate to pursue anything that interests you in the ads... such as... erm... Saftey.. Light.... Curtains... uhm... :nervous:
-
We'll talk. :D
Uh, uh! Uh! *raises hand viciously*
Talk to me too! :D
-
*arrives*
Hope I am not too late for the party.
Go ahead and sign me up for that webring thing so I can put it on Game Warden.
-
Looking cool. Shame there's no quick reply yet though.
-
Uh, uh! Uh! *raises hand viciously*
Talk to me too! :D
All in time, little ones. :D
-
Go ahead and sign me up for that webring thing so I can put it on Game Warden.
I was just about to contact you about that. Check your Gmail account. :)
Looking cool. Shame there's no quick reply yet though.
Dude. Read the rest of this thread. ;)
-
Pardon my ignorance, but how do I uhide my username?
-
Very Nice, well worth the time. Good job Admins. :D
-
I think there was some hiccup a few minutes ago. It was giving an error that the server was full.
-
It's done that for me too.
But hey, there are always some things that pop up, eh? :D
-
Yeah, we think there was a typo in the webring script. I've disabled it for now to see if that helps any.
-
The speed is back. :)
-
From my end it looked like the entire SQL server simply shut down.
If you want me to take a look at the script to proofread it let me know.
-
Aha! I knew you were up to something. For once, my paranoai has proven correct. You sneaky devils.
erm, good work and so on. Everything so new and shiny, it even has that new car smell.
-
OOOOooooooh... Everything's so shiney. Super cool.
My only complaint is that the font size is too small. The webring bar up top is barely legible. (Or was, while it was still there)
-
Well this is certainly worth the wait. :)
-
My only complaint is that the font size is too small. The webring bar up top is barely legible. (Or was, while it was still there)
Ah, this is Sandwich's area of expertise. ;) We're still fine-tuning stuff a bit for the masses - we'll keep you updated. :)
-
You guys might want to remove the custom tag/etc stuff...also, what is this position thing?
-

Do you mean the formatting options on the reply box? Or something else..?
-

Three things: Control Panel > Display > Settings tab > Advanced button > DPI setting. Choose "Custom" and get a ruler that has inches. Put it against your screen and match the DPI setting of the screen so that an inch on-screen is an inch on the ruler.
Next, make sure your browser (what is your browser, anyway?) is set to View > Text Size > Normal (for Firefox) or View > Text Size > Medium (for IE).
Here's a screenshot of a thread about the same font size issue in the staff forum (yes, you get to peek!) in my two browsers for comparison; this is how I coded it to look. Pardon the color dithering - that's not important for this purpose anyway. ;)

omfg, i can see the HLP pics! w00tage!
i really like this template, and the whole set up. no more timewarps, either! :D
-
hell yeah, general sweetness and all!!
-
I am really liking this new design!
-
no more timewarps, either! :D
Oh, yeah - those! :p *waves buh-bye to GS*
-
Sick... this is so cool...
and of course, it comes back better than ever just as I was getting over the withdrawal.
A serious question though... how are people going to find their way here? The gamespy site just says NOT FOUND and if people didn't know that this was coming (I mean, I assume that there were one or two...) then they might not find their way to the new domain, yeah?
-
It seems to depend on whether you had your link to the HLP main page or direct to the forum, as I did. Had I not been privy to certain informations, I would not have found this place for a while ;)
-
ah... yeah, I always linked direct to the forums.
-
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Feels great to be back *puts slippers on, sits in recliner, drinks coffee*.
I like the new design as well.
-
Hmmm. The forum is a bit broken in Firefox. I'd have thought that you'd be certain to make sure it works in FF properly O_o
Also agree with the too small font thing. I mean, I can adjust it easily, but I shouldn't have to do that when my screen resolution is only 1024x768.
It's a spiffy design though =)
Oh, the counter on the bottom is broken link.
-
I didn't notice too much difference with changing the scaling font size thing, it seems everything BUT the forum got its text bigger. But no biggie, I'll get used to it. :)
-
I can't scroll down the page in Firefox. How do you disable the Iframe for siggies?
-
You can't, just avoid hovering over the sig area.
-

Interesting that you should mention that. 3dap.com/hlp redirects to dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/hlp; we have that redirecting to www.hard-light.net. dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums are redirecting to www.hard-light.net/forums - I just tested that out then. Which domain gives you "not found"? We'll look into it.

Virtually all the admins (Styxx, Sandwich and I at least) use Firefox. What problems are you having exactly? Take a screenshot and email me if you can (setekh at gmail dot com).
-
I guess I should stop in and pay homage...
-kowtow-
-
I can't scroll down the page in Firefox. How do you disable the Iframe for siggies?
Shorten your signatures. ;)
-
That is the best solution. Realistically, anything more than about 5 lines of text is too much.
-
Talking of sigs, is it possible to kill sig images? That was a great feature (or rather lack-of-feature) of the old HLP, and I've noticed one or two popping up already much to my dismay....
-
Those scoundrels.
-
Also, setting the max sig length to 2000 characters is a bit high. I'd recommend setting it to 300-500.
-
Ah now don't get fascist on it. You guys can get carried away about these things.
-

Yeah, we will. Give us some time to get around to all of it.
-

300 is the limit at WS, and there are no problems there. 300 fits quite a bit.
-
Awesome that you guys don't have to rely on Gamespy for hosting anymore. Me likes

Hrm. A popup appears when I use quote (it says "retrieving quote"). Just something interesting I noticed.

That's standard behavior in SMF.

So can you describe what's your exact problem, Chrono? Is it with the disappearing header or something else?
:wtf:
I agree. :wtf:
-
I had to click it :D
-
I had to click it :D
I almost don't dare ask what you found after you clicked 'the Skinny Llama'...
-
Cool update, but it will take some time to get used to the new colors and everything. I can't yet say if I like it or not.
-
Great update, lovin the new look.
-

Not to worry, you'll have plenty of time to get used to it. To be honest, most of the changes are under the bonnet, to be honest - security, speed, the new server and domain, etc. Glad you like it for now. :)
-
So can you describe what's your exact problem, Chrono? Is it with the disappearing header or something else?
Most notable is that the striping pattern is missing from Firefox. In Deer Park Beta (now 1.5 beta) the header graphic is completely missing. Perhaps it's been fixed now in 1.5 beta 2. I'll have to check later.
Nonetheless, it's still rendering a bit funny in normal Firefox.
Obviously it's not a serious problem, but I thought you guys might want to be alerted to it.
-

Linking directly to the old forums. It redirects me from http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=19 to http://www.hard-light.net/forumsforumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=19 which gives a Not Found.

Yeah, it's much appreciated. We'll get to it (likely when Styxx or Sandwich wakes up) eventually. Please have patience for now - and let us know other stuff you see which doesn't look like it ought to.

Aha, I understand. Probably because it's a straight HTTP redirect; we can fix that. We didn't count on people bookmarking individual forums, but that makes sense. We'll address it soon.
-
Setekh, I meant that in the user profiles section, you get to have the "User Status" or something or another. It's a custom tag form, I think, but it doesn't do anything, so it should probably be removed.
EDIT: Right there. That's what I meant...look to the right of my postcount. I'm an Orion, but what is the Ravana thing doing there?
Also, please, for the love of whatever Gods you follow, guys...remove the sig image ability. Please. :D
EDIT: Just a section - maybe you guys should set up a central thread for all forum suggestions, and sticky it at the top of general. That way, you can get a bunch of new things, and you have a greater likelihood of not missing anything :)
-

Aha. We'll look into it.
As for the sig images... we've already been told. About twenty times. ;) Sandwich and Styxx are asleep; when either of them wakes up, it'll be taken care of. :)

I believe you were an Orion in the old system, and a Ravanna in the new.
-
My God... I wake up and the first thing I see is that the whole SQL-server took a hit and now crawls like there's no tomorrow. :sigh:
-
I can't scroll down the page in Firefox. How do you disable the Iframe for siggies?
Shorten your signatures. ;)
It's not my sig that's the problem. It's everyone else's. :p
But yes, anything over 5 lines is a bit much. Oh, the no new topic when you reply to the topic is nice too.

This doesn't quite work unfortunately and it's a global setting that affects everything anyway. It causes some things to get misaligned and at least on my laptop, has a weird effect on IE and Firefox, causing all website images to look pixellated.
-

Yeah, I know it's true. ;) Still, I think we were still firming down the limit. If someone is causing scrollbars on their signature, that's way too long.
I may suggest that we simply move back to a character-limit for everyone's sigs... hmmm.
-
RAWR!
FIRST!
Third, actually. There were two posts, me and Sandwich, on the other night when it first came up, but they have mysteriously disappeared. Not that I'd feel obligated to name names. I will, however, point fingers.
*Points at Sanger*
And you'd better have fixed the tags...
What's this? Three days warning and no fixage? Not on fellows, not on at all!
-

Mwahaha! Others getting blamed for my mischief! :drevil:
Also, you have no idea how comforting it is to hear someone call a sandwich a sanger. Makes me proud to be Australian. :D
-
By the way, the reason the header graphic doesn't work in Firefox is because the javascript that displays the google ads in the header doesn't work in Firefox. The browser won't render the background of an empty table cell (it's empty without the google ads), so the header image disappears.
You can verify this by putting some random text inside the header cell. If you put some text in, the header will suddenly reappear.
www.cyberberry.com/kamikaze/misc/hlp3.html <-- Try this. I stuck a non-breaking space into the header cell.
-
By the way, I find this button amusing, in a HLPesque context.

The webring is really nice, but are you going to add SCP site to the webring thingye on top of the forum? I think it would deserve that

-
I do not like this!
Well, I do like it, it´s HLP afterall... But I liked the old look better. In the old days the posts were seperated by background color. And it was, how should I say this, easy to look at.
Now all posts have the same background color. And the quote link is brighter than the quote itself! Furthermore, when replying, the reply automatically gets topic (RE: someobvious****), which adds to the useless text on the screen. All this makes the forum "messy" to read. I am already having flashbacks of 800x600 pictures in signatures...
I am I can get used to this new look. But I just thought I should tell my initial feelings...
I like the new options and settings thought. So far everything else is positive, exept the visual look...
EDIT: ****e! It looks like the post topic (subject) is a must. Why is that!
-

I would post there, but I seem to be lacking access to that forum.

Ummm... I think I missed something. Last I checked, in the old days posts were all the same colour (Hard Light was all black, and just orange lines separated all the tables). Here, every second post is maroon or black. What's colour scheme do you have going?
-
Thank you Fury. I'll post a staff list in a moment. :D

Cheers Spicious, looking forward to getting all the hosted projects back on their feet.

Project leaders: please post a list of members who should have access to your project's internal forums to the Hosted Sites Support Forum (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,22.0.html).
Everybody noticed this, right? RIGHT? :D
I would post there, but I seem to be lacking access to that forum.
Fixed.
The text in those nested quotes is getting pretty small. :D

Yes, it really is. :p

Ummm... I think I missed something. Last I checked, in the old days posts were all the same colour (Hard Light was all black, and just orange lines separated all the tables). Here, every second post is maroon or black. What's colour scheme do you have going?
Are you sure?
I am pretty sure the posts were seperated by colour. At least in the TBP forums.
And in here, every post is on black backround.
It might have something to do with this crappy school computer with ancient explorer :ick: ... I´ll go home where I have opera.
BTW: Where is the hand smiley list? Am I supposed to remember all the smileys?
BTW2: Thet notification about new posts when replying is great! On the other hand, this is the third time I am trying to get this post out, and always there is new replys!
-
I have a request/suggestion...could we get some more obvious way to tell new posts in a thread? Right now it's more difficult to tell which are new and which are old because you have to read the date, geusstimate when you were last here, etc etc.
-
Whee, BitTorrent. Too bad my school blocks those.

Ahhh. What you're complaining about is actually two different issues. Firstly, we haven't restored all the hosted styles yet; so that's why the TBP style is gone. Everyone is using the default HLP style right now. Secondly, I think it may have something to do with your browser - try it at home. No one else seems to have the 'every post background is black' problem.
Hand smiley list: I realise it's not perfect, but this is the closest thing we have at the moment. :)

Notification about new posts: I know, I love it too. SMF is a winner. :D

Yeah, Goob was missing that small feature from vB. We'll see what we can work up.

:shaking:
YAY It's back! Lotsa good, lotsa things I'm going to have to get used to though. Please do tell me the nested text can be changed. Apart from that I really do like the changes, and it was worth more than the couple of days estimated for putting this up. Nice work, everyone.

Appreciated, Nix. When we put up the maintenance message on the old boards, and started prepping the new boards for import and transfer of all the old stuff, we realised we'd bitten off a lot of work to do - hence the week and a little bit that it took us. But I think we'll all find that it's worth it. Believe us, this is just the beginning. :)
(Also, we'll see what we can do about that nested text. ;))

Oh, one thing I just noticed. There doesn't seem to be an option to change the number of posts per thread or threads per page anywhere... Or am I just blind?
-
Oh, one thing I just noticed. There doesn't seem to be an option to change the number of posts per thread or threads per page anywhere... Or am I just blind?
Yeah, admins can change that globally - but I don't know either if that can be changed on a per-user basis. We'll see what we can do about that.
-
I think the old forum had that option but the maximum wasn't high enough. I personally like to have all the posts on a single page unless there are over 500 or something.
-
Hmmhmm. *looks around*
Looking good. Nice improvement. Indeed a great looking forum.
-
crikey, this will take a little bit of getting used to.
-
As you have probably already noticed; at the moment our biggest problem is our SQL-database, which is more heavily loaded than we ever anticipated. We have already made several adjustments to help the load on the SQL-database. To completely fix the problem, a short downtime may be necessary in the near future.
-
crikey, this will take a little bit of getting used to.
I hear that, this is going to take much getting used to...
...Apologies if this has been asked before, but what's happening with the 'Custom Title' - ie. Hercules, Fenris, etc. - which used to be based off posts, but now seems to have been superceeded by a Shivan-oriented system referred to in the profile as 'position'. Could I get some clarification on this...?
-
It's different.
I'm liking all the improvements so far (looks much better definitely, the old forums looked a bit flat to be honest), although I agree about the posts per thread thing.
-
I think the reason you still have your old rank system still visible is that this VB apparantly supports custom tags by default. I'm not sure if it's removable - admins? I personally like the old system, where you only get a custom tag if you do something particularly notable for the community, but that's just me :)
-
I think it's sort of like seeing a long haired hippy-esque Rocker dude that you've known for years suddenly going to a job interview in an Armani suit, sunglasses and a haircut, it WILL take getting used to, but it's still the same guy ;)
-
At least one part of the new forum is broken under Firefox. The top banner is just showing a blank red strip.
-
The search is also still broken, but I'm sure the admins know that :)
And I'm not having that problem :wtf:
-
At least one part of the new forum is broken under Firefox. The top banner is just showing a blank red strip.
Odd, I'm using Firefox and it's not doing that for me...
-
The search is also still broken, but I'm sure the admins know that :)
Unfortunately we had to disable search because it caused other SQL-queries to totally stall up to two minutes, which appears as unresponsive forum. We're still working on SQL-database load problem.
-
At least one part of the new forum is broken under Firefox. The top banner is just showing a blank red strip.
Or maybe it's just broken under your copy. Works fine for me
-
Everything works fine in opera...
The forums look a bit better with a 19" monitor and in higher resolutions... So it was the creppy school com to blame. And I won't be going to school until next year, so I belive I can cope with this new look...
-

Try refreshing.

Since it was already lost in the posts, I'll post what I noticed about Firefox and HLP3.0 again.
In FF1.5 (or the Deer Park betas) the entire title graphic is gone.
In FF1.0x, the striping pattern for the Key Stats and User Info boxes is missing.
For the old Firefoxes, you might not even realize it's missing until you open it up in IE.
-
For me, it seems that the title graphic is actually behind the red stripy-thing instead of missing. You can see it poking out from beneath at least in the 1.5RC's.
-
That's bizarre. I'm using 1.5 RC 2 and the title's there, instead I'm missing the striping pattern.

Nothing different in IE except the striping. Actually it looks broken on IE

FireFox 1.5 RC2, updated this morning

[EDIT] I just noticed: look at the bottom right of the key stats frame in IE. There's a line there which shouldn't be there
-
Like I said in another place, nice new forum guys. It's good to have HLP back, I was really missing it.
Three things I would like to point out (suggestions, not complaints :D )
a) Is there an option for "mark all forums as read" It's a little bit confusing right now detecting new post, since everything is "new" atm :)
b) a different background colour between the post itself and the left part with the nickname. This was more eyefriendly IMO
c) Like already mentioned, could you fix the and stuff ? It would save me reworking some sticky posts :)
Again, good work on HLP 3.0. Keep it up.
(edit) Never mind point a), figured it out by myself :)
-
I just tried to quote a post with an image, and post an image in my reply.
This, somehow, seems to be completely beyond the capabilities of the damn system. It was all crazy ding-dong stuff and random >b [bre[imgimageshack[quoteBlackWol[/img]goatse>>589731> stuff. God damnit.
-
I'd just like to say, Good Job all involved in the upgrade. Its nice that after all this time FS still has so much support :D
-
Since nobody noticed when I posted it the first time, I'll post it again. This is about the rendering issue in Firefox.
-
It's a little late, but: Dizzam!! This is definitely a MAJOR improvement to the layout! This more than justifies the long downtime :D .
-
What is with the new private messaging system? It's weird...I can't make heads or tails of it.

It does work. But in Firefox, you can disable javascript (don't know about IE)
-

Oh duh. I forgot I had javascript disabled on Firefox as I rarely use it nowadays. :p
-
I just get the striped background. Tried a full refresh. No difference. Running Firefox 1.0.7, with Javascript enabled.
And the new forum icons seriously need some ALT text. Some of them look almost identical.
Ummm... and why is there an ad for spyware at the bottom of each page?
-
What would be nice is if each post that's consecutive would be a different colour. That is, posts alternate in colour
Red
Black
Red
Black
I like having contrast between posts to delineate them.
Either that, or highlight the header for each post. That would do the job as well.
-

I mentioned this myself. Though I now know that the posts do have different background colours, the other colour is way too dark. Almost black.
It should be brightened a bit. But don't highlight the header. The post text should be the thing that jumps from the screen, as it's the most important thing.
Edit: And that quote link text is so bright it's burning my eyes. They are always the first thing that catch my eye when reading the boards. No!
-
I had google ads blocked already (for other sites), and when I unblocked them, I got the banner. I never noticed it was gone since I'd never seen anything different on HLP 3.0.
-
What would be REALLY nice would be if there was a higher ratio of content to cruft. The amount of icons and buttons and useless information attached to every single post has finally spiralled out of control with this latest iteration of the forums.
This is how forums should be:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=100955
Nice and clean. None of this "kitchen sink" approach. Only the commonly-used functions included in the layout.
-
I'd like to second the question of whether or not there's an option to mark all posts as read. Seeing all of those "New" icons all over the place makes it difficult to actually determine what's new. Also, for some reason, the Quick Reply box keeps throwing me out to the main forum whenever I make a post instead of showing the new post in the topic; is this what it's intended to do?
Other than those minor gripes, I'm really liking this overhaul. Our own domain...torrents...spiffy new forums...great stuff :D
-
Yeah im here too. Welcome all!
-
Look for the little mark unread button. It's on the same line as the text explaining what the New Posts and No New Post icons look like on the main page.
-
Another weird thing I've noticed is that when you post, rather than taking you to the last message in the thread (usually your own, of course), it takes you to the subforum main page instead. Why is that?
-

Returning to the thread is a profile option.

I dont know if anyone else is experiencing this, but when I post, nothing happens, sometimes as long as 30 seconds or more. This happens to me here at the college which is super speedy, and at home on my dialup connection. Kinda laggy, is how I can put it simply. It doesnt happen all the time, but it has happened more than once.
-
1) Look harder next time
2) http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=markasread;sa=all
3) It's at the bottom of the forum index
-
Hrm. A popup appears when I use quote (it says "retrieving quote"). Just something interesting I noticed.
Yes, and? It puts the text you want into the quick-reply box. What's your point?
So can you describe what's your exact problem, Chrono? Is it with the disappearing header or something else?
Most notable is that the striping pattern is missing from Firefox. In Deer Park Beta (now 1.5 beta) the header graphic is completely missing. Perhaps it's been fixed now in 1.5 beta 2. I'll have to check later.
Nonetheless, it's still rendering a bit funny in normal Firefox.
Obviously it's not a serious problem, but I thought you guys might want to be alerted to it.
The lack of striping in Firefox (or, rather, the presence of striping in IE) is due to IE's inability to handle transparent or partially-transparent PNGs. So we make concessions. Firefox gets the smooth half-transparent PNG, IE's stuck with the all-or-nothing striped GIF.
This doesn't quite work unfortunately and it's a global setting that affects everything anyway. It causes some things to get misaligned and at least on my laptop, has a weird effect on IE and Firefox, causing all website images to look pixellated.
Misaligned? Website images being pixelated?? Neither IE nor Firefox resize images regardless of what font-size or screen DPI resolution you have... one pixel equals one pixel to them. Can you explain your problem better?
...I will, however, point fingers.
*Points at Sanger*
And you'd better have fixed the tags...
What's this? Three days warning and no fixage? Not on fellows, not on at all!
"Sanger"?
And the colour tag cannot be "fixed", for two reasons: One, it's not broken. It's spelt properly, because we're on International English here on the Internet. Two, we cannot add a "colour" tag in SMF. Get over it. You don't have to type it in anyway.
By the way, the reason the header graphic doesn't work in Firefox is because the javascript that displays the google ads in the header doesn't work in Firefox. The browser won't render the background of an empty table cell (it's empty without the google ads), so the header image disappears.

Done - thanks dude. :)
Please do tell me the nested text can be changed.
What, the fact that the text gets smaller? That's on purpose, and I see no reason to change it. There's no reason to leave 5 levels of quotes in your posts; learn to properly format a quote and reply.
b) a different background colour between the post itself and the left part with the nickname. This was more eyefriendly IMO
c) Like already mentioned, could you fix the and stuff ? It would save me reworking some sticky posts :)
b) Personally, I'd say "No" outright. ;)
c) Unless these posts you mention were made since the relaunch, then you're wrong. Styxx wrote an (incredibly awesome) script that parsed through ALL the imported posts and changed "colour" tags to "color" tags. No reworking should be needed. And like I wrote above, we can't add a "colour" tag. Just not possible.
And the new forum icons seriously need some ALT text. Some of them look almost identical.
Ummm... and why is there an ad for spyware at the bottom of each page?
ALT text - agreed, but I dunno if it's feasable. I'll look into it. At some point. Maybe.
And as for the spyware (*glares* (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,35737.0.html)), I'd remove the image if I could, but the stats we get through it are more valuable to us than the pain it gives.
What would be REALLY nice would be if there was a higher ratio of content to cruft. The amount of icons and buttons and useless information attached to every single post has finally spiralled out of control with this latest iteration of the forums.

I really shouldn't post when I'm this tired. It makes me short-tempered. Anyway, if you don't like it, make yer own forum.
Also, for some reason, the Quick Reply box keeps throwing me out to the main forum whenever I make a post instead of showing the new post in the topic; is this what it's intended to do?
That's a setting in your profile. I recommend to EVERYONE: Look through your personal profile settings and adjust where needed. Thank you.
-
Jeez, no need to yell. :p Compared to the old forums, there are about ten times as many profile options, and I haven't even noticed half of them yet. I think there was a little bit of truth to the sentiment that they just seem a little too busy. I'm sure I'll get used to the look in a few weeks, but right now I'm in sensory overload mode. :p
-
[q]And the colour tag cannot be "fixed", for two reasons: One, it's not broken. It's spelt properly, because we're on International English here on the Internet. Two, we cannot add a "colour" tag in SMF. Get over it. You don't have to type it in anyway.[/q]
Right, I'd just like to point something out here. Firstly, there is no set language on the internet and in fairness, it's not our fault the initial speakers/writers of "international" (read:en_US) English were too lazy to spell properly. :p
Besides, you're Israeli, you should be demanding a Hebrew colour tag. :D
-
I'm so proud of you guys. You've done right by me :).
The new layout will take a little adjusting to (hurts my eyes at first) I think I like it.
-
Not bad. The changes have already made it much nicer.
Only thing left are the silly sig lengths and perhaps colour contrasting posts.
*can't find the thumbs up smiley*
-
Neither IE nor Firefox resize images regardless of what font-size or screen DPI resolution you have... one pixel equals one pixel to them.
Ahem. IE -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Multimedia -> Enable Automatic Image Resizing
What, the fact that the text gets smaller? That's on purpose, and I see no reason to change it.
So quoted text being less legible is a feature? Quoted text already gets a different background color AND horizontal rules. Making the text smaller on top of all that seems like overkill.
-
Chrono, you've got two options. :yes2:
Finally I get the chance to check this out properly. It's good to have the forums back up, and I'm sure the remaining bugs will get worked out soon enough. The thing that's going to take the longest time to adjust to I think is the reordering of the content forums, since I had gotten into the habit of checking them based on position alone. But excellent work overall!
-

You can't add custom tags? Well that's utterly ridiculous. If you can add custom tags (and I know for a fact that you can) then a tag can not be difficult, as it's just a custom tag triggering a HTML command. I'll use the incorrect spelling (I'm curious as to how American English became "International English" when it's used in, what, two countries officially?) for the moment, but I'm looking around trying to find out how to make it work, and I have no doubt I'll eventually figure it out.
-
Could you add a "colour"->"color" mapping into the word (or smiley, or whatever) filter so that when black wolf types it gets translated to before the code is parsed? Or does that happen the other way around.
-
Sanger, sorry to say it, but you're well and truly off your game these days.
Go into sources/subs.php.
Find the color tag
Copy and paste the array directly underneath it.
Change it to "colour".
Works like a charm, already tested. It took me and my brother about seven minutes to figure out.
-
Don't feel like reading through 160 posts just want to say some things
1) Site looks awesome
2) Classics section on main page is off limits. Make it visible and put the Clangers thread on there ffs.
3) Where's the 50 posts per page option?
-
Hey BW, look. I know Mike's a bit firm on this, and who knows if he'll implement your fix or not; however, because you've been so persistent with this, I'm going to give you a present. I'd like to add how interesting it is that Black Wolf and burlywood both have the same acronym.
Anyway, you'll have to quote my post to accept the present.
-
I didn't even know burlywood was a color. And I thought I was pretty good with color names after solving Herman Toothrot's "philosophical puzzle" in Monkey Island 2. :D
Misaligned? Website images being pixelated?? Neither IE nor Firefox resize images regardless of what font-size or screen DPI resolution you have... one pixel equals one pixel to them. Can you explain your problem better?
I'll post a screenshot of this a bit later. I have no idea why it happens.
In any case, messing with the dpi and font settings makes no sense for just one site. The thread index and main posts look fine but there is no reason to have all the other fonts so small. For example, the thing where it says "Hard Light Productions Forums » Hard Light Productions » Hard Light » Topic: ANNOUNCEMENT: Welcome to HLP 3.0!" appears at the both the top and bottom of the thread; the size at the bottom is how it used to be, but at the top it's much smaller.
While I'm at it, the one thing that used to be small before and was appropriate that way has now become bigger, the edit postscript added on when a message is edited. It might be better to leave that the way it was.
-
Guys please, calm down. No flaming and spamming. Play it nice. Thank you.
-
This thread is too long/flabby/old to serve its original purpose. Sticking a locked thread of the original post up the top of Hard Light and officially leaving this one for dead. :p
-
Just got back and...WOW! :jaw: You all did an amazing job! Love the new scheme. ;)
-
Thanks, Marauder. Enjoy the shiney-ness... it's like playing SCP for the first time with shinemaps installed. ;)

Jeez, no need to yell. :p Compared to the old forums, there are about ten times as many profile options, and I haven't even noticed half of them yet. I think there was a little bit of truth to the sentiment that they just seem a little too busy.
Yeah, I know. And I wasn't yelling, I was making sure that everyone saw that part of my post, since I'm sick and tired of answering questions people can answer for themselves if they know where to look - I merely told 'em where to look. :)

First off, I'm American-Israeli. :p So there.
Secondly, American English is the international language, like it or not. And the Internet is definitely international. So there. :p

Changing font size and/or screen DPI settings has zero effect on Automatic Image Resizing.
And quoted text is smaller because one level is fine, and still legible. Two levels is still ok. Beyond that, it's your problem. :)

Thanks for the tip - I'll do that when I have the time. At 3:15am last night (when I replied above), I was exhausted, and wasn't thinking beyond the "Custom Tag" mod's abilities in SMF, where arguments (such as WHAT color to use) are not carried over from tag to output.

It's not something for just one site, it's the proper settings for your computer. I'll explain more later if you wish, no time now.
As for all the different sizes of things, yes, they're mostly known issues that are very low on the priority list. That said, keep in mind that I didn't take the vB HLP theme and change it. I took the default SMF theme and HLP-ized it. So some changes are inevitable. ;)
-
Well done guys, thread locked.

Thread will be opened any second now and offending posts were deleted due to a request from one of the members.
I hope I don't have to regret this.

It's really sort of funny that American English is the standard when it's not even standardized :p

Heh, well, we got both bases covered now, so everyone can be happy :D

Well, that didn't take long. :D

I blame my experience in the Rift. And Ghostavo <_< >_>

This might come as a surprise to you, but the person who requested the thread to be re-opened and offending posts to be deleted instead, is not who you think it was. Give the case a rest and take a cold shower or something. Direct insults have never been and never will be allowed.
