It's certainly a Horus.
-
Lookin' good. Can we see a side-by-side old/new untextured image?
-
Hurrah! I'm thrilled to see more Vasudan fighters and small vessels being worked on.
-
Lookin' good. Can we see a side-by-side old/new untextured image?
It's nowhere near that point yet... this was more or less an "ok, ok, I caved" post.
-
But if I did, it would look something like this.
-
Right now, to me, it looks more bumpmapped than HTL'd (except for in the untexed images). As a start though?
I'm interested to see what you do with the cockpit.
-
I like it so far. Make sure you do something with the smaller parts, like the gun barrels and the outer winglets. Polies invested in those will be more effective than ones invested in the general hull, for example. :)
-
Maybe this is personal preference... but the whole body of the HTL version looks too jagged... I can't help but feel it should be smooth and rounded rather than staggered as it is?
-
I think the textures show otherwise.
-
Nice work. I like it so far. :)
Is it getting a real cockpit?
-
WMC: :wtf:
I think the textures show otherwise.
Like the Serapis, IMO.
DaB: Maybe :drevil:
-

i have similar feelings
even if freespace is in space and there is no air. The horus always was a veeeery fast aeordynamic craft
and it should staj that way i think
I hope you will not leave the cockpit as it is :)
-
Personally, I don't see anything "aerodynamic" about it. It looks fast, yeah, but it looks like it'll drop like an iron balloon in atmosphere. I think the plates look more aggressive.
-
I'm with Raa, but the middle part always looked to be smooth to me, so I voted for the dolphin+armadillo mating ritual.
-
WMC: :wtf:
What I mean is that I can tell that you've fleshed-out the textures, but it seems like you could still make it look a lot better.
*Laughs* I guess this could best be summed up with a bash quote: "don't stop." I like where you're going with it.
-
Yep, BD just about sums it up.
-
Out of curiosity, anyone have Bob's Vasudan model? or any other vasudan model for that matter. I'm sure I could make one... but, meh.
Also, I need some sort of scale reference. How big is a zod in this thing?
-
Dolphin and Armadillo DNA just don't splice.
Oh wait it does. Option 3.
-
Well, option 2 for me, all-out smooth just isn't the Vasudan...
Option 3 would also work, like smoothing the dark grayed section, and "plating" the light-grey colored area...
-
option 3, looks rather nice so far :)
cheers :D
a cockpit would be awesome tho :D
-
Anyone any other concerns they'd like to voice before I proceed? I don't wanna hear about all the things people think should have been donw a few months down the line :p
-
You will always hear from people about what should have been done after a few months down the line.
The key is to not care :)
Just make the damn thing.
-
I'm still working on a vasudan pilot.
-
Oooooooo.
-
Just ****ing around, really. Pilot needs to be replaced, and not so happy with the cocpit at all.
-
Reminds me of one of the fighters in the movie Stealth. :p
-
Somehow those fighters in Stealth-Movie reminded me little of Shivan Maras *Don't ask...*
-
As long as the pilot doesn't end up doing a moonie out of the cockpit window ;)
Looks good so far Raa :D
-
Little bit of work done to the rear section...
-
Me likes
Make sure to show ass (engines) and bottom when you're done with em too.
-

-
It would be nice if you could transition those sections in the back into each other better. They're overlapping and smooshed together right now in a way I don't like.
May I implore you to make your Vasudan pilot/cockpit map fit the same UVs as a Terran one for texture swapping? I did a rather crude one earler you can use as a template before you draw your own... remember, Vasudans have flight suits as well.
-
I'm not using the same cocpit model at all. It's preposterous for me to think of a terran cocpit in a vasudan ship. Reskins went away long ago. However, for the actual pilot... if you can get me decent screengraps of the vasudan's flight suit I could try to keep it UV'd as close as possible when I make the model.
-

-
You know i always thought the ovals with the little blue lights beveled out. Otherwise looking top notch!
  Two thumbs fresh!!
-
Everyone says that, and I myself thought so too, but if you look at the side it's lit on, compared to how the edges of the recessed areas are lit, it shows them bevelled in.
I think Gank pointed this out when he was doing his ultra high poly Seth.
-
I need ideas for a vasudan cocpit..... :/ So I can mold the glass better and stick the pilot in there...
-
For the sake of it being alien... something more form fitting and organic than a Terran cockpit? Vasudans have long arms so I'd start with that... lying down with outstretched arms controlling one joystick with each hand...
-
Sweet looking so far
Are you going for a bubble canopy or an angled approach like in the mockup pic ?
As for the interior, maybe look at the Psamptik main hall for inspiration. How's the Vasudan in the control tower thingie seated ?
-
As for the interior, maybe look at the Psamptik main hall for inspiration. How's the Vasudan in the control tower thingie seated ?
That's just it, he's not....
ying down with outstretched arms controlling one joystick with each hand...
I was considerring something like that, in a laydown position..... dunno, though, as that only lets them look straight forward, unless their heads can bend all the way back... :s
-
Perhaps prone, instead of supine. The Anubis must have a prone gunner in its hull, judging by its shape.
-
You know how Vasudan cockpits and suits look like from the pilot animations when they speak.
My suggestion? The Psamtik mainhall. The booth that Vasudan to your right side of the screen is.
Just copy that.
-
It's on the left, and he's standing at the panel. I was going to copy the panel, but how do they sit? Grr.
-
I think they sit like Humans. I haven't looked in a while, but IIRC they sit in normal chairs in the briefing animation before the capture of the Taranis in FS1. That's probably going to be your best source for imagery for Vasudan pilots anyway, as I think they are wearing their flight suits there as well.
-
If you watch that cutscene you'll notice that you never actually get a good view of the Vasudans sitting down.
-
and that theyre probably very uncomfortable
-
It's on the left, and he's standing at the panel. I was going to copy the panel, but how do they sit? Grr.
Yeah, it's on the left (with this kind of disorientation problems you might wonder how the hell I'm able to fly anything at all here).
How do they sit? Inner workings of legs are nicely displayed in the Silent Threat Headz video etc. when they walk around. Might want to... imagine something from there. Because of their weird legs, maybe they squat in a sitting position ro something.
-
When cosidering the size of your average Vasudan, and the flatness of their fighter craft... I don't think they really sit in their cocpits. Im thinking something like a tilted "bench" where they lay on their stomach (a little something like the fighter thing in Halo). If the front of the bench is little higher, the pilot doesn't have to twist their neck as much. This theory is supported by the fact that in most Vasudan fighters the cockpit window extends all the way to the bottom. If a Vasudan somehow fits in in sitting position, why would there be need for his feed to see the action?
-
Again, that's not the case considering we already have the in-flight pilot videos where they are obviously in an upward position from the chest up.
-
Um... Good point...
:nervous:
I'll go away now...
-
How about looking at the settings guy in the vasudan main hall, it does look like they are in a standing, or possibly squatting, position.
-
They sit upright alright. But I guess I'll have to tae creative license again... Much like everything else... :sigh:
-
:wtf:
-
Is that guy the right size?
-
Seems to be a ton of space in there? Do you think its a two seater? Many vasudan craft seem that way....
-
AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Make it humanE! :p
-
I actually on't know whatthe right size is >..>
-
2.3m ???
http://www.descent-freespace.com/goodies/gallery/species/all0001.jpg
-
2.3 max units, since they scale 1:1 to a Freespace (POF) meter.
-
standing, yeah, but not sitting....
-
Guestimate it. Upper body and head should come to slightly over one meter, IIRC. You'll never get the chance to scrutinize the pilot for .1 meter scale deviations anyway.
-
By the way, rather than sticks, I might use the whole "organic button finger pad" thing, where the Vasudans control with a pad for each of their fingers.
Also, the head anis generally show Vasudans sitting up and in armor, you should take that into account as well. :)

Could have sworn that I wrote this once, but:
My laptop is in for repairs and Uni starts again on Monday, so I won't have the chance to work on this... at all. So If someone wants to look at my shoddy geometry they can PM me and I'll send it, but otherwise it's going to be on hiatus until... possibly spring break.
-
*MEGA BUMP*
Did anything ever come of this? I dont recall if I sent it to anyone, or if I didn't. I have the scene on my computer and found it while looking for something I owed to SoL.
-
Very nifty. Certainly worth polishing off!
-
I was beginning to get a little concerned; there hasn't been any action in here for a few months as far as new models go. Damned real life... At any rate, that's one hell of a Horus. :)
-
That is purely awesome :)
I really like the front end of the vessel, it was done like perfectly, and the outer ridges are really cool too, and not overdone either i might add. After that the guns and the outer wings are really nice, and the greebling on the top center of the ship is cool. Maybe a little something can be done to the part that's inbetween the center ass end thing and the outer wings, that's the only part that seems a little plain.
then again, i might be completely wrong about my tiniest gripe which may not matter when the damn thing is textured with a hi res texture :D It's the nicest looking work in progress untextured htl model i've ever seen.
After that second place for an untextured model goes to the hecate :D
-
Gimme gimme gimee!!! *grabs*
Anyway, will it be textured? I like Horuses. My second favorite FS1 Vasudan fighters (Seth is da best).
-
Seth is a buet already though... glad to see the Horus getting a face life.
-
Its actually already textured. I've just been tweaking things as I go along, to make parts look more coherent, and overall more pretty. Though, I cannot say for sure when I'll finish this completely. I just today purchased a new computer ( :D :D :D ) with a conroe e6300 and the rest of that good BS, so I'll likely use that for the rest of my work on the model.
So in about a week or so (as Im also quite busy with school)

3 times, even. Imagine that.
I realize a lot of my posts come off sounding rather asshole-ish, but... err... I just prefer not to use smilies.

Last I recall, you got stalled while trying to figure out how to model the cockpit.
-
Ah. Right.
Well. Fick the cockpit. Im not going to go out of my way to make a strange Vasudany cockpit. Especially one that would (though likely not) set the precedent for other Vasudan cockpits...
-
what we need is some concept art.
-
Here's what I think as far as Vasudan cockpits are concerned. The only way that we would get a glimpse at a true Vasudan cockpit is if FS3 was ever made(don't kill me for saying that). And since it won't, let's just go with our own community.
We should have a concept art/model concept submission thread, and then have another thread with a poll.

Holographic panels. Mmm. Like how I put in the Myrmidon... (But not high res)
Also a nice sneak peak at the Vassy ship in the corner... (in external camera view? o.'.o)

Nah, just glass. And the view is from a non-player ship, hence the lack of hud stuff.
Better shots;
Not able to get a decent camera angle, though, so 'exterior' is the best I can manage. And it's obviously not a Horus type cockpit.
-
Damn, I wish I had a way of working that into the model... (assuming I could finagle it out of you......)
(And now Im really looking forward to seeing your campaign. Dunno if I'd play it, but the modelling alone...........)
-
Is that Lost Souls? Wow. Just got me interested. Again.
Will you give us any hints as to what this (http://www.sectorgame.com/aldo/media/fightingthedead.jpg) is?
-

No, not LS. LS is on a reasonably long hiatus and has been for a while now. This is for something much smaller and targeted at being out relatively soon. The cannier people will probably have figured out by now, but that's irrelevant here :) For point of reference, Ls doesn't have any Vasudan ships; consequence of trying to keep a sane number of mods....
And no, not yet.
-
Ah. Right.
Well. Fick the cockpit. Im not going to go out of my way to make a strange Vasudany cockpit. Especially one that would (though likely not) set the precedent for other Vasudan cockpits...
Last I recall, you were considering having the Vasudan pilot fly in the prone position, since the size of a Vasudan compared to the size of the craft, meant that that was the only way that a Vasudan could fit in.

Yes, they are big buggers; which does raise a question as to how the GTVa has duel-species cockpits.....
-
Telephone books on the seats...
-
Uber bump.
Since I dont have a Vasudan cocpit to put into the model, Im about read to say it's finished.
-
Yeah... with environmental mapping ships without cockpits don't look too shaby
-
one little crit... can u make it so the back end has the same over-lapping as the front end for uniformity?
-
The ridges? Hells no I dont wanna put that on the back :shaking: that was a nightmare
-
Just do something dumb to fool the rest of the hlp community. Like putting in the standing up vasudan cockpit on the horus, and the vasudan would be facing straight up. And then watch the dumb**** vasudan piloting his horus in game.
-
Uuuu...very nice...
Say, Aldo, would you be willing to put the vasuan pilot model up for DL?
There's a bunch of us out here making vasudan cockpit anda allready done pilot would help speed things up :D
-
With regard to the pilot, he looks really, really surprised, and I didn't think Vasudan pilots wore such 'normal' helmets (from the 'chat videos' at least).
-
That's an elegant little fighter indeed.
-
It looks great to me!
Don't get bogged down in yet more details, just get her out there! :)
-
Wonderful HTL Horus.
-

-
Alright. Ill see about trying to do it this weekend, if I dont get bogged down in classwork.
-
The Horus is looking great but it does desperately need the same plating on the back section. With that it'll look spectacular.
As for the cockpit and pilot:
Ask Bobboau for a copy of his Vasudan .pof, it is very faithful to the cutscenes.
-
Perhaps. I havent touched max in weeks.
-
(http://www.game-warden.com/forum/imagehosting/11045f4ec02ed7ba.jpg)
For example?
-
Yes. Very, very yes. :D
-
A vast improvement. Looks incredible.

this deserves a place in mv_core.vp, intead of the "you dont realy need it" mv_models.vp!

but it's a model!

You mean to tell me that you don't realize that all hi-poly models (and ones with the glowpoints and **** like that) go into mv_models? Good lord.
-
i realize, but its a compliment saying people shouldnt have to diwnload 60mb of model just to get this one, but instead have a more convient and smalle rdownload. YEESH.
-
Um, you DO realize that the models don't go straight into the VPs?

Is it done yet? I want that beauty. :D
-
How many polys so far? IMO all it needs now is Bob and let it rock
-
I dont keep count of stupid measurements like polycount which mean absolutely nothing, sorry.
-
She's a beauty alright
-
nice glows
are they pulsating? i always think vasudan ships would have pulsating lights. just look at the vasudan main hall.....
-
Lies, they do not. Look at the Satis. Or the Hatshepsut. :P
-
or the low-poly horus with mv_textures activated
-
It's looking great!
I was wondering if those light tan areas are going to get a texture upgrade--I've always thought they looked a little plain
-
It's a sleek ship, and it currently looks great with the current texture and the new polies.
-
it looks like a cross between an armadillo and a dolphin if you ask me...
-
Ummm, I don't think anyone did. :P
-
IF you ask me. pay attention to text.
-
what, you 2 are running the anual noobiness competition now?!? :P
can it
-
yes mr. shiv...raven.

Will you two please stop bringing this into every thread you both post in? We've got it here, we've got it in a thread in Source Code. We get the message :p

enough already!
-
Ultra-necroposting here, but whatever happened to this here HTL Horus? It looks pretty done to me, judging from the last screens.
-
No release, just a model dump on Sectorgame. That's a textured render.

-
Looks a little bit *too* bumpy IMO. But otherwise very nice ;7
-
Yeah. A tad strong.
-
A Vasudan would say:
"Formidable!"
It's fantastic...it's more Vasudan and gives the impression that the interceptor is aggressive(it was, indeed, a nightmare for Terran bomber pilots).
-
The "bumpyness" depends on your launcher settings.
For the screenshots I've used this command line:
-ambient_factor 25 -spec_exp 10.0 -spec_tube 1.0 -spec_point 1.6 -spec_static 3.0
With the standard setting, it looks like this:
I think the standard settings work best for the fixed-function rendering.
-
Yeah, they're undoubtely better.
Great work, I love the upgrade
-
Looks good in that case. I think that the map just needs more detail (a.k.a HTL-ify it) so that it doesn't look like a balloon in places.
-
I think the funny exposed bit in the middle could use some more stuff.
-
It looks good ingame, I think you saw those shots already, Snail.
-
I wasn't really sure where to post this, and I hope I'm not intruding, but I've got a suggestion for the Vasudan ships. It seems to me that since the Vasudan architecture is very organic, the textures on the ships should reflect that. For example (this was a really quick photoshop):
What I've done here is take some basic organic textures of honeycomb and some scales and multiply them over the originals. I think it adds a level of detail and realism that is lost in higher resolutions.
-
Wow. Now, that IS a nice touch....I would actually like to see that in-game before offering a definitive judgement, but you have me sold on the idea.
-

omg can i have sex with it :D
-
Don't say that! You remind me of :shaking: that picture...
-
I would want to see a small amount of normal mapping on the organic areas too, adding depth to the honeycomb and the scales. Not saying yours should, since it was just a photo shop.
-
IMHO that detail would look nice on the shine map, with the diffuse map honeycomb being very very light.
-

agreed. It's the subtle features that often give a skin that bit of polish that makes it awesome.

Do it lords of photoshop :)

Please no more damn biotech! Why can't the Vasudans sculpt metal to look curvy? By your logic, this should be organic:
But guess what, it's made of steel!
The tan parts that you honeycombed look more like sails than scales anyway. Vasudan technology has always been depicted as being similar to Terran technology, and many of the FS1 Vasudan ships (Osiris, Amun, Bes, Typhon, etc.) are obviously completely artificial. They're not using magical biotech, they just have less utilitarian design principles? Why give their ships veins and honeycombs?
-
IMO, it doesn't matter whether it's biotech or not, it adds some much-needed surface detail to the ship.
-
That car has an "organic" feel, organic doesn't just mean carbon based you know.
-
That car has an "organic" feel, organic doesn't just mean carbon based you know.
you know, someone should overlay some honeycomb and scales on that car, just to see how it looks...
-
Please no more damn biotech! Why can't the Vasudans sculpt metal to look curvy? By your logic, this should be organic:
Don't you remember the inside of the Vasudan ship when you get transferred? It is extremely organic looking.
-
I hate the idea that Vasudans have biotech. I mean that's painfully stereotypical and, IMO, stupid. I mean look at all the ships. All of them look organic and first glance, but when you look deeper, you do see mechanical pieces and stuff. Vasudans do not use organic technology. They just cover it up for aesthetics. I'd give some examples if I could but I'm not at my computer right now.
However, giving the illusion that the Vasudans were trying to make their ships look organic is a brilliant idea, and IMO, very Vasudan.
-
Read the Tauret's tech description...they wanted it to look like a species living on the surface of Vasuda Prime...that doesn't make it the result of biotech...
-
(http://www.made-in-china.com/image/3f2j00zCMEcouWOfbpM/Dog-Toy-Animal-Doll.jpg)
This must be biotech. Looks like an animal.
EDIT: I do think the scales on the top look kind of cool myself, however the texture on the lighter brown outside area just doesn't fit. The scales can sort of pass for pretty looking armor, the honeycomb not so much.
-
Even the honeycomb doesn't necessarily have to be biotech. Maybe the paint-job team was feeling creative.
(And I can't say I ever expected to see Kuroneko-sama show up in a normal maps thread. :p)
-
The scales were badass, but I agree the honeycombs weren't great.
-
(And I can't say I ever expected to see Kuroneko-sama show up in a normal maps thread. :p)
Kuroneko-sama is in everything. ;)

Vasudan tech is not organic. Read about it in the fs wiki.

Was the high-poly mesh ever finished?
-
Nope.
