dude, imagine any RTS with this.. seriously
hell, imagine the software of your choice requiring a lot of mouse and KB input.

Yeah, that's pretty cool.
-
Amazing! Touchscreens have finally become a viable user interface!
I want one.
-
Some of that reminded me of Minority Report, though without the fancy gloves. Pretty cool.
-
Me likes this very much.
-
so now when i touch my tanks and tell them to attack i can slingshot them to the target with my fingers?

I posted this about a week ago, but it got gobbled up in the Great Day of Reckoning. Minority Report, ahoy!
-
Whoa, I don't need drugs to enjoy this... just to enhance it.
Seriously, that is very cool. I want one too. :D
-
Ooooohhh...
Me want!
-
Wow, that's like the sand thing that was posted awhile back. Except... electronic...
-
Now this on a version of E-Paper with a refresh rate that is comparable to a current PC monitor?... ;)
-
This, I like.
-
I wants that..........think of all the room I'd save with that as a replacement to my TVs and Computers......
[EDIT]Forgot to mention, what they need is an optional KB and mouse output for other things, then it would be complete.
[EDIT2]Oooh..Wait, better idea. Piloting the ship using your fingers or visuals on the screen, without using a keyboard.
-
you'd need lots of cloths and windex
i imagine it'd get smudgy
-
Wow... that really was something...
While a KB/Mouse would be good for some legacy apps, you can do almost everything you need with that screen. You can even dedicate some portion of the screen to a "keyboard" so you don't need a physical one (maybe like a tool bar, you can hide it when you don't need it or something).
If you got the tech to the right size, make a fully programmable keyboard for people stuck using OG monitors. Don't like the button config in a game? MOVE THE BUTTONS AROUND!
That was really nice.

Me first!

No, you can't TYPE on it.
Yeah, I know what you're going to say-- "bu-bu-bu-virtual keyboard! Wank wank wank!" Shut up. You simply cannot touch-type on a flat surface. It doesn't work, because you can't feel where the keys are. Even real keyboards have those little nubs on the F and J keys to help people find them by touch.
Furthermore, it doesn't even make a good mouse replacement because dragging your finger across a screen takes significantly more effort than moving a mouse, AND you obscure the screen while you're doing it, AND you're knocked down to essentially just one "button".
This screen is basically a gimmick that might have limited application in high-end graphics and design.

That's pretty much where I would look at applying it if I had one, graphics and 3D Modelling (imagine being able to rotate and zoom your object and tap on individual polygons to select them without your fingers leaving the screen). Might be a good Brainstorming tool as well, you can create 'bubbles' of text, which you can then drag around/connect in any way you wished with your hands, a lot faster than trying to do it using flowcharts etc.
Zylon is right about the typing though, a keyboard is still the best way of inputting text.
Might be interesting as a game controller for things like RPG's or Sandbox games, where you need to manipulate things easily.

RPG's? Think outside the box, man. Imagine what the Porn Industry could do with it! :D

-I think what YOU meant to say is "yes, you can do pretty much anything with that screen, but some of it might not be as convenient or practical as current HIDs".
-
So this is pretty much pre-packaged LCARS? Sweet....sign me up.
-
I wonder how hot the screen gets...

Mefustae, any reason why you type 'Porn Industry' capitalized?
Please tell me you haven't decided it is a legitimate deity.

Oh, and very cool tech. Would be interesting to see for sure. :)
I think having a pen / tablet type interface may still be required for somethings though. What would be cool is if it was sensitive enough to pick up the texture of different items, so you could literally use a paint brush, pencil, lemon, brush, whatever, all without getting your hands dirty. :D
