I just downloaded the single player demo and all I can say is HOLY FRIKKIN CRAP!!!! This game is the BEST FPS I've ever played... And the AI is incredibly stunning!! I put the demo on moderate difficulty, and I died 6 times (no I'm not exaggerating) and a specific part about halfway through the demo level....
I havent tried the multiplayer demo yet but that time will come....
I Love it!!!

*Mefustae smacks ZmaN over the back of the head with a two-by-four
-
yeah, if FEAR is the best FPS you have ever played, you must not play a lot of games. :p
-
gee thanks for ruining the moment....
what is better than FEAR, might I ask...
-
Go back a few years and play Deus Ex. Or try Chronicles of Riddick for something more recent.
FEAR is a pretty nice game, but it's hardly the best FPS ever.
-
don't forget about System Shock 1 & 2.

Deus Ex sucked when I played it (right when it came out). Bore fest.
FEAR is indeed one of the best FPS games I've ever played. I can't help but feel unstoppable vaping clones and crushing heads with my l33t skills in that game. It's almost enough to make me forget being scared of the dark spooky things around every corner. Almost.
-
Nor Metroid Prime 1 & 2.
-
You old school gamers flog off, accept they were good games and move on! :p
FEAR is one of the best games I've played over the last year. I love the melee component mixed in. I only wish it went longer. :(
*awaits sequel*
-
i like fear, cuz its pretty and its scary

deus ex was brilliant, it's sequel left much to be desired, however, fear was good, real good, but it was missing something, i can't quite put my finger on it, however. Fear, however, did set the standard for onscreen pixel shader effects in mid air.
Fear needs a sequel, yes.

Wow. This is one of the rare times I will agree with Mefustae here.
Tons of eyecandy, and an actually decent implementation of FPS Bullet-Time, but other than that the story was predictible, and is so linear, I've not replayed it since I finished it. Also, one of those games that you'll finish in a weekend if you really want to. Way too short.
Deus Ex, SS1 and 2, are NOT for the people who what the wham-bam-thankyouma'am action that you get with any recently developed FPS (Save for SWAT 4 and maybe Riddick). Since there's such of an overabundance of these games out there today, it's just boring to us who miss what devs put into games in the pastL Heart and soul. They're so concerned about eyecandy that it's sickening.
I refuse to move on. I'm sure that STALKER will revitalize the whole character development FPS that Deus Ex was. Games need what FS2 and DX1 and SS2 have in them. Make it more than a "cinematic gaming experience." If I want that, I'll go rent a movie from Hollywood Video instead of spending 45 dollars on a game.
-
Agreed.
That said I'd like to point out a bit of a flaw I found in FEAR. Its design was too modular. If you'll notice - as you go through the levels you rarely find a mix of scary-bits and action at the same time. It's almost always long bits of nothing or action or scary-bits.
Once you work out that formula it's fairly easy to tear through the nothing/scary bits because you have little chance of being harmed.
That said, overall it was a great game and I really did love the ending. It'd be quite fun if they went further in a sort of ghostbusters/conspiracy type direction with it... sending you off to hunt down supposed paranormal/unexplained threats that turned out to be tied into your charachter somehow.
-

THQ is not behind the delays, the developer is behind the delays. The developers needed more time to make the real-world simulation work better, and THQ has been cooperative in giving them the time they need to finish it proper. At least THQ didn't do what Eidos did to Ionstorm and botched two potentially great games because they wanted them released by a deadline. (Anachronox and DX:IW)
Agreed.

That's the beauty of SS2, it's spooky no matter where you go. This is why I'm also hoping that BioShock is going to be a nice new approach to Scary, done in ss2-style spookiness. To think.. SS2 with dynamic lighting, 5.1 surround sound.. hearing the echoes of footsteps while running around through the coolant tubes.. aawwgh.. FEAR doesnt have that magic. It's mostly eyecandy, with a traditional "something sinister" plot.
You'll be on the rooftops in FEAR, fighting off goons, blasting away, then come upon a really tough guy or a slew of neverending goons. THEN you'll be treated to a spooky part. Then, in some cases, you'll be treated to an extremely empty part with absolutely nothing going on, supposedly to give you that "what's around that next corner" feel. The crackling HUD is very annoying to me too, whenever something's just about to happen. Totally spoils the whole spook effect for me. It's like.. Cracklecrackle, oh I know something wierd's gonna happen. The ending WAS good, but came way too fast. Well, not the very last part, but the start of the ending sequence was pretty cool. I'm a guy who despises most horror films, and I feel the ending was.. well.. cheap. I'd rather go watch Event Horizion again.
-
Little mixed feelings about F.E.A.R , I don't know...I really wanted to be part of the 3-4 man team and see all those reactions of my team mates when looking at those chewed corpses :drevil:
I liked the game alright, it had some really haunting situations and occasional spooky atmosphere, but it just lacked...something. Perhaps few AI buddies, intelligently acting team mates, who find these things be as much as freightful as you do.
Well, maybe I try it again...It think the game's audio was the best part of the game, along with very intelligent enemies.
speaking of audio...this is the perfect game to testride my new Z5500 5.1 system, along with
X-FI Extrememusic. :D

i hate to sound like a fortune cookie, but, it's not the destination, but it's the journey itself that is the most worthwhile.
either way, yes, the end was abrupt, but, the game itself was a hoot.

FEAR was overall a solid and polished game and one of the better games I have played recently, but the thing is it didn't really stand out in any way. I certainly liked it a lot, but best FPS ever? Not by a long shot. Although it's definitely worth a replay.
As for the "fear" aspect, I don't get how anyone can find this game scary. The only fear-inducing thing about FEAR was the framerate, although that was really quite the horror experience. :shaking:
FEAR is one of the best games I've played over the last year. I love the melee component mixed in. I only wish it went longer.
Considering that we had maybe four major FPS games released last year, that's not saying much (and SCCT was waaaay better IMO). 2005 wasn't such a great year for games in general, with very few standout titles. This year looks like it's set to be much better.
-
FEAR was a forgetable experience. Especially since the multiplayer is crap.
-
I hate bullet time

hwo can you sit there and curse bullet time like that!?!?!?!?! That is THE best part of the game...

Is it really crappy? I havent tried the multiplayer demo...
If so, why is it crap? just out of curiosity..
-
Its impossible to explain. It just is.

splinter cell isn't an FPS tho :p
however, call of duty 2 is pretty good, too, has the atmospherics down right, that's for sure. but, there will be an FPS that's better than FEAR, just when a game hits "the best ever" status with a fan, there's always another game that comes along and raises that bar just a little higher.
-
F.E.A.R. is a good game, but you don't get much mileage out of it imo. Once you beat the SP a couple of times, and get tired of MP, there's nothing to do. No one is making a Single-Player map. I haven't found one! It's a blast to play, while it lasts.
-
Half-Life 2 is the best FPS ever. And no, your flames will not light me on fire, no matter how relentless your assault.
-
Not HL2, man! Doom 2! Best old-school fps ever. Duke Nukem 3D comes in second :).
-
Half-Life 2 is the best FPS ever. And no, your flames will not light me on fire, no matter how relentless your assault.
No. Just, no. No flames, just a simple no.
-
I assume that by "no", you mean "yes'. It's okay, happens to all of us.
-
Half life 2 was good, but Valve changed the game around too quickly to cover all of the flaws that arose. such as the sloppy storytelling.
-
FEAR was a forgetable experience. Especially since the multiplayer is crap.
Admit it. You say that because it's not Xbox/360 exclusive.
-

Admit it. You say that because it's not Xbox/360 exclusive.
there are reports that it is coming to console, however, and a spectrum of sequels/related products, as well.
-
Not FEAR itself. They're making a PC sequel and a console sequel though. The devs have already said something to the effect of "We're not going to water down our games to try to make them multiplatform.", bringing much joy to the hearts of PC gamers.
As for the game, it's a good game. It's certainly the best pure FPS I've played in a long long time. The scare elements were a sad joke, and it's essentially a game about shooting squads of soldiers in office buildings, but the soldiers are pretty smart, and bullet time kicks ass. But it's not like it's up against a lot of strong competition in the pure FPS category.
-
FEAR was good. The plotline was good, loved the scary bits even though my FPS was generally crap and such. It was overall a very fun experience - one I really haven't had in a while in most of the other FPS.
I wouldn't call it the best FPS out there, but it certainly is amongst the top contenders.
Oh, and for a bit of spammage, if you liked the game, why not read what happens when you take things a little further (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,37110.0.html) :p
-
Oh yeah, forgot about that story of yours. :D
Singh, I havn't seen you in while, where you been hiding!? :)
-
lack of interest land, mostly. That, and the new forum layout doesn't really appeal to me...meh, just missing something. That, and I couldn't play FS2 cause of it's requirements, and FREDding became too much of a fustration when your missions corrupted at random, so i guess I sort of 'migrated' over to spacebattles.com for the time being, posting only down at the HLP art forum occasionally.
Then I moved back to india, and now im here for the moment...have a new computer that's way better than the old, so hoping to get back into the swing of FREDding and Freespace - this time in full 1284x1024 glory with AA and the full deal. :D
That's provided my sucky internet can download the torrent off the net that is :p
But enough off-topicness.
-
Well its good to see you back dude. :D
I was starting to worry about you for a little while there, thought you may have been kidnapped by shivans or some such. ;)
But yeah, enough off-topicness. :)

Half-Life 2 would have been the greatest FPS since Half-Life (the first one)), if it had been like it should have. But thanks to some weirdos it is just butchered FPS with nice physics, and I feel sad about that. AvP (again, the first one) was nice and exiting. It was actually so scary I had trouble getting my self to play it. And when I did play it, it was mostly me running like hell hoping to get to the door, with a hoard of uglies in my ass... (I know, I'm a wuss :nervous: ) But still, I wouldn't call it the greatest FPS ever.
Actually, I can't really name the greatest one...
I'll have to think about it, while I play SILENT HUNTER III !!!!11!1!?!!!#$%(\@£ [... message too long...]
-
I really liked the FEAR demo...definately one of my top 10 shooters of all time. I gotta say the best shooters I've played were FEAR, Far Cry, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2004, and a few others...definately NOT Doom 3 or Half Life 2 though.
-
still dunno what all the fuss was over half Life (1) :doubt:
-
still dunno what all the fuss was over half Life (1) :doubt:
because it was a MAJOR technological improvement for the time...
I mean you had red faction, doom 2 (i think), half life, and a few other games.... :hopping:
Well Doom 2 had the worst graphics, and red faction had kinda sucky AI, so Half Life was the best shooter for the time...
Its sequel isnt good, when compared to other First Person Shooters, and well, some of the AI had problems IIRC in Half Life 2... I tried playing the demo myself and there just isnt much action to it... I went through this one corrider with bloody corpses and the nasty looking zomby things just shot out... And becasue I had no ammo left from the other zombie I took out before, I had to use a frikin crowbar and well, lets just say after that, I uninstalled it and havnet played it since...
As for HL1, Havnt played it yet, so I cant input on that.. :(
-
I mean you had red faction, doom 2 (i think), half life, and a few other games.... :hopping:
Dude. You're way off...
At that time Quake II and Unreal were teh monstars. Then came HL. Then after that (a year or two) came Red Faction. And so on.
Half-Life wasn't really so technologially advanced. But it actually had a plot (good one). It was heavily scripted, offering numerous "cool" moments. And the player had allies that actually were usefull (guards).
Q2 and Unreal were perhaps prettier than HL, but were basically the same old same old shoot your way trought supermutantmosteruglies with rocketlaunchers. Red Faction combined these. It had plot (fairly interesting one), scripting, allies (not very useful ones) and some heavily armoured mercs with rocket launchers. Only thing new was the geo-mod, wich was fun for a while (glasshouse!).
-
HL2 was definitely the worst of the modern games by some distance. That game bored me to tears unlike anything I've played in a long time. It's hard to believe that this crap was the sequel to the excellent HL1. Although I wouldn't call HL1 the absolute best for its time either, as it came out a few months apart from Unreal and System Shock 2, both of which were superior in different ways.
splinter cell isn't an FPS tho :p
Well, it's close enough. :p I guess we should be referring to these games as xPS in general. :D
I gotta say the best shooters I've played were FEAR, Far Cry, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2004, and a few others...definately NOT Doom 3 or Half Life 2 though
UT2004 was absolutely jam-packed with maps and features, but a lot of people including myself were quite disappointed with the weapon balance and generally slowish pace compared to the original game. I was a hardcore UT player for over two years but never really got into 2004 the same way. I hear they are going back to the original gameplay with 2007 though, which would make it the next huge game for me.
Well Doom 2 had the worst graphics, and red faction had kinda sucky AI, so Half Life was the best shooter for the time...
uh, Doom 2 came out three years before HL1. Of course its graphics aren't comparable.

According to Gamerankings.com, the best FPS of all time is Halo:CE... Unless you consider Metroid Prime an FPS (it's an FPA), in which case it takes the cake.

By avg of reviews from gaming sites. By average of votes it's GoldenEye007 aparently.

let's have a quick rundown of the most recent FPS's that i've played.
Half Life 2, purdy, great use of physics, but very unimpressive storytelling, you could squeeze the entire story on the back of a playing card and have it readable by the naked eye, it's storytelling was just too sloppy for it to be the best ever, if you think it had the best story ever, stop reading pizza menus and read tolstoy or something, sheesh. :p
Quake 4, nice, but felt like a Doom 3 mod at times.
Call of Duty 2, nice, atmospheric, gritty, good graphics, and historically acurrate (sorta), but it was yet another WW2 game.
Halo 2, nice post-prod effects, reasonable storytelling, but let's face it folks, the end was pure sloppiness by how it abruptly ended.
FEAR, great graphics, sweet on-screen effects, pretty good storytelling, it's non-reliance on the bullet-time feature may have been alright, but its one flaw was really it was overall a little bit samey, it was a corridor shooter, really.
Pariah: god, were the reviews ever wrong, story?.. what story, HL2 had more story!, definitely was aimed for the console market (let's face it, pure console gamers aren't the brightest of the bunch :p) it had -prerendered- cutscenes on video files, but they were done in its engine, so it looked -real- crap, if it were an unreal2k4 mod, it woulda been great, but otherwise.

Too true. Enemies in both F.E.A.R. and Halo are relentlessly good about using cover and flanking you.

yeah, yeah, tell that to alma wade, dingus, i have played fear, i own the game, and i said whether or -not-, i know the enemies are good at taking cover, flanking maneuvers, call for backup when you've wasted most of their squad with a portable cannon, and ****, but seriously, great AI shouldn't be a determining factor in whether a game is great or not, it should actually be a given.
and reading about it on game sites, i've learnt not to trust many since pariah.

Ive heard that HALO 2 was the exact story of HALO 1... True or false?
AI is a given, I totally agree...
Sorry about my list of games compared to Half life... I only write what I remembered from like 4 months ago off something I read on IGN
Far Cry, FEAR, Tribes Vengeance, Freespacce 2... those are the best games I've ever played...
Oh, and if you want a game with a story, I STRONGLY suggest you get a copy of Tribes Vengeance. Its story is UNBELIEVABLE... I actually had to play the game twice to get the full effect of what was happening. Its got Decent AI, good graphics, and you can run it with high detail and 1024 res on a geforce 6600 card...
Oh, and I must recite this, I HATE CONSOLE-TO-PC PORTS...
Im happy now.
Anyone check out black for Xbox and PS2 lately??? WOW that game looks fun.. Although you wont get much milage out of that one either....
-
Story is not exactly the same as Halo 1. Halo 2 has you starting out defending Earth from Covenant forces, but things change. Quickly. Unfortunately some would say, however, I thought the "shift" in perspective was effective and more fun than a certain other game made it.
-

I tried it on the xbox, its not that fun at all, its somewhat pathetic if you ask me.................then again I think most every EA game is pathetic
-
Black was hyped as the "everything killer" (because the "Halo killer" Killzone fell on its face) yet still fell on its face because it has really, really retarded AI and about 6 hours of campaign with no multiplayer and is riddled with bugs.
Typical EA game.

Irrational knows how to do a proper modification of the Unreal engine, unlike Ion Storm (Yes, including Deus Ex 1) and irrational really tries to put good stories into thier games, but I simply did not feel near as involved as I did with System Shock 2. The story is good, yes, and it's got a decent amount of content to get through (first run players shouldnt be able to complete this game in a weekend, unlike FEAR..) but it felt lacking, even for an Irrational game. Good voice-acting and fancy graphics do not make a story, oh no. Even the old and crusty System Shock 1 IMO has a better story than most games out today, unfortunately the corporate greed story has been beaten to death in just about any media form you look at today.
I think they hoped too hard for it to be the next online tribes game, and hardcore Tribes players dismissed it for some reason or another. I wouldn't know because I missed out on the Tribes bandwagon back in the day. All I know is when you login to the servers at night, theres relatively few servers available to play on, and plans for a patch were canned by Sierra due to low sales. Irrational basically had to throw up it's hands and give up on it. All this, and SWAT 4 gets an expansion pack!
Untill I see as much heart and soul that has went into such masterpieces as System Shock 1&2, Deus Ex 1, and Freespace 1&2, I refuse to move on and be sucked into the all flash and no content state that is the modern gaming scene.

Let's face it, folks, EA's really a pain when it comes to games, including the Sims series of games, i can remember when i could count them on one hand. nowadays you need a freakin' abacus just to keep up.
and yes, i do find it sad that a person would buy, and play a game involving you having a virtual life, i found the sims like watching dead grass grow, utterly pointless in the end, mind you, that's what EA's all about, these days, their company mantra might as well be "we make utterly pointless games" westwood was the only thing good going for them. :doubt:

NFSU & 2 weren't bad comparing them against Midnight Club 2 which was boring IMO. NFSU and U2 were made by Black Box IIRC, Canadian branch of EA. Cali-based EA can go to hell, even if it IS HQ for the publisher, swallowing up great studios such as Westwood and the shutting down of Looking Glass.
When the Sims 2 came out, for some reason, the kids at the LAN center I frequented were playing that more than they were playing CS or BFV. I'd hear them say this more often than not: "Make them do it! Make them do whoppee" or whatever it was called. Wow.. A game that gave players the choice to engage in sexual activity, in or out of wedlock, for the sake of pure pleasure or procreation, and how much flak has Maxis/EA recieved over it? Compared to Rockstar's GTA:SA and it's "hidden" fully clothed and extremly stupid "sex" scenes? At least in GTA:SA, you could skip that whole side-story if you wanted to as it's not required in order to finish the story, but in Sims 2, your characters Want and NEED it, so it's sorta required to complete the game. Sure, it's a "life simulator" but when your character's wants and needs are "to make whoopee in public, and to make whoopee in the hot tub, and another one related to whoopee, all on the same page, what game is more suggestive? One where it's part of your goal to keep your Sim happy, or the other where you have the choice to take part in the side story or not?
Hmm..

The problem is with many console FPS games these days, is that they don't have much in the way of actual, story, or plot, it seems only just recently, that many console game devs have realised that many gamers have a little more culture beyond just shooting stuff onna screen.

I'd say that's a problem with most FPSes in general, not just console ones.

I also think its because it is hard to pull a good story off in a FPS genre.
FEAR had a pretty successfull attempt at it with flash back cutscenes, interactive cutscenes and atmosphere.
Half Life 2 put you in the feet of the character the whole time but explained too little.
Halo used cutscenes and the ingame discussions with Cortana.
Halo2 used heaps of cutscenes, and few ingame discussions with Cortana.
Doom3 used few cutscenes and ingame radio discussions, mostly relying on atmosphere.
Quake4 had a similar make up as to Doom3, with a few more interactions with the characters.
Compare these to the story telling abilitys of say an RTS game such as Warcraft.
Warcraft 3 and Frozen throne use fully rendered cinematics for chapter intros / exits, and ingame custcenes while playing. I think one of the things Blizzard can do quite well is tell a story.
Or Homeworld 1, sure the story was an adaptation / rip off of Battlestar Galactica, but the atmosphere they managed to generate was spot on. Those first 3 missions from the game were always soft spot for me.
I think its just developers evolving their story telling techniques as the years go on. Its not that they arn't trying. (well, most of them anyway) We just have to hope that the gaming industry keeps evolving rather than go EA mainstream...

Now who actually thought that when HW came out? No one. And for a good reason. Homeworld has nothing in common with BSG, exept that you have a fleet in a hostile enviroment. It's like me going around saying the story of Freespace is an adaptation / rip off of Babylon 5.

that's because there have been more FPS's on PC, than on a console, but yeah. a lot of games are all shiny and lovely to look at and ****, and they forget the fundamentals of entertainment. Eyecandy =! entertainment. Eyecandy is nice and all, but a story drives the game along.

True, I never realized till recently.
It does have some similarities though.
A lone fleet, their homeworld destroyed, pursue a hope to find their homeworld across the galaxy. Constantly chased by a vastly superior empire.
Sound familiar?
But Homeworld was beautiful in every possible way, and I did love it. :D

That's not really a valid comparison to BSG. What you just described could describe tons of stories, and the whole homeland destroyed thing is a story that isn't exactly even limited to the science fiction genre.

Oh, the Jews and exodus!
Crafty folks they are indeed, inserting their illuminatic imperialist-zionist-communist-fascistic agenda into everyday lives of unaware computer geeks.
