let's have a quick rundown of the most recent FPS's that i've played.
Half Life 2, purdy, great use of physics, but very unimpressive storytelling, you could squeeze the entire story on the back of a playing card and have it readable by the naked eye, it's storytelling was just too sloppy for it to be the best ever, if you think it had the best story ever, stop reading pizza menus and read tolstoy or something, sheesh.

Quake 4, nice, but felt like a Doom 3 mod at times.
Call of Duty 2, nice, atmospheric, gritty, good graphics, and historically acurrate (sorta), but it was yet another WW2 game.
Halo 2, nice post-prod effects, reasonable storytelling, but let's face it folks, the end was pure sloppiness by how it abruptly ended.
FEAR, great graphics, sweet on-screen effects, pretty good storytelling, it's non-reliance on the bullet-time feature may have been alright, but its one flaw was really it was overall a little bit samey, it was a corridor shooter, really.
Pariah: god, were the reviews ever wrong, story?.. what story, HL2 had more story!, definitely was aimed for the console market (let's face it, pure console gamers aren't the brightest of the bunch

) it had -prerendered- cutscenes on video files, but they were done in its engine, so it looked -real- crap, if it were an unreal2k4 mod, it woulda been great, but otherwise.
