Cool beans... Though I disagree about what he said concerning the graphics... But it's Metroid fricking Prime so it doesn't matter TOO much.

OT: The logo for the Revolution is... well, you can see for yourself.

First up, it's an old movie - at least several months old I believe - that doesn't actually show parts of the actual game, it's only a promo-thing, and as such the engine is still subject to change. The existance of a Metroid Prime 3 is also considerably old news, as the success of the previous titles have led to said sequel being one of the launch titles, and it might just be the killer-app Revolution needs to get started. Regarding the "logo" that you commented on, the fact of the matter is that 'Revolution' isn't actually the name of the console, it's only the code-name.

Actually recent evidence points to Revolution being the final name of the console.

Revolution will probably end up being the name, it's the name almost everyone recognises it by.

As for looks-wise, it looks ok, nothing exceptional, but then Nintendo have always been more about producing good games than producing pretty ones, I certainly hope they maintain that procedure.

I was happy how the first sonic games looked and I'm afraid what will turn out of this http://ps2.gamespy.com/playstation-3/sonic-the-hedgehog-next-gen/ monstrosity!

I always thought that over the past five years, they've been abusing and exploiting old franchises to the point where nobody wants to play them. *Cough*Mario*Cough*Zelda*Cough*Metroid*Cough*Donkey Kong*Cough*

Too right. I mean, nobody bought those stinkers Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, or Metroid Prime. Some may say they're among the best console games ever, but well all know that bastards at Big N totally killed the franchises!

He might be referring to games like Super Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker, which IMO were pretty awful.

I'm not really an MP fan. But the Revolution is so far the only next gen that genuinely interests me. And as far as graphics goes, to be quite frank I think I actually prefer the more current-gen graphics the Revolution looks like having over all the overly photorealism-focused games I've seen on the 360 at the moment. I don't like the way they don't have much individual graphic style, many of them look the same to me.

Honest question; have you played the games for more than five minutes?* I wholeheartedly agree that the premise of both games was kinda wierd, what with 'Sunshine' and crap for Mario, and the cell-shaded cartoon graphics of Wind-Waker. But, when you actually get into the meat of the game, Wind-waker is one of the best of the franchise adding a nice bit of originality with the ocean, and Sunshine is almost as fun as Mario 64.

*Seriously, I don't mean this in an insulting tone, simply an inquisitive one.

I own and have completed both games. My problem with Mario was that it wasn't much of a Mario game when you got right down to it, and I just found the gameplay pretty frustrating. And Wind Waker's graphic style was the one thing I actually liked about the game. Overall I didn't really find its story very interesting, and the whole ocean business was just tedious to me since everything's so far apart and there's not much for you to do between islands.

I think I'm going to buy a Gamecube, actually............seems to make sense just to clean up the cheap current-gen stuff, I genuinely don't care about appearances nowadays.

I don't really care about the/graphics anyways, particularly not from a 50 second blurry press presentation.  I wouldn't expect the Revolution to be (at least initially) as far behind as expected (in gfx terms), though, because it's reportedly using a very similar architecture to the Gamecube and thus should be a lot, lot easier & quicker to harness it's potential.  It's the control system that interests me, though.

NB: I believe that footage originates from the Tokyo game show in September 2005, when the game (demo, really) was ran on modified Gamecube hardware (according to the Wikipedia). The IGN (http://cube.ign.com/articles/615/615089p1.html) page suggests the clip was pre-rendered (which is odd, becuase another (http://cube.ign.com/articles/617/617302p1.html) IGN page suggests it was a snippet of work-in-progress code).

In all honesty, i've played very little of Sunshine [although from what I have played I thought it was enjoyable], so I can't justly challenege your assertions. However, regarding Windwaker, you do make a good point with the whole Ocean thing, which can get bloody repedative traversing before you get the Cyclone-song-thingy. But I actually liked the story considerably, especially the whole 'sunken-Hyrule' aspect of it. Twas a great experience traversing Hyrule Castle frozen in time.

Anyway, i'm sure the Mario franchise will get back on its feet with Rev's 'Mario 128', and 'Twilight Princess' is essentially what Zelda fans - and the GCN community at large - have been waiting for since that promo at Space-something-or-other in 2001.

I've always liked Nintendo because of the fact that they tended to keep away from the 'I'm a hard bastard' type games, which seems to be most games out there at the moment. They all seem to involve people who walk around with huge guns and give meaninfull looks at the camera whilst dressed in either full combat gear (male) or 1 foot of silk and two pan-lids (female). Nintendo could make an action game without falling into the 'It's got to be gritty' trap, and because they were not beholden to that 'real life' image, they could be a lot more 'fantasy based' and enjoyable for it.

Nintendo is definately going for a different piece of the market this time.  GameCube tried to compete directly with X-Box and PS2 and I imagine it did alright but I think it was always number three with PS2 firmly infront and X-Box in second place.  But what Nintendo is doing these days seems to be like its mobile market...the DS is a neat little piece of hardware.  I admit to only having touched one for maybe 10 minutes and tried a game or two but its got some completely unique games that you will never find on any other machine.  That seems to be doing well for them...they own the market.

Revolution is, I think, going to try and do much the same thing.  Lower cost, specific gaming related features, unique abilities not found elsewhere.

perhaps they're -very- unsuccessful with the ladies, and hence why they wear them  :p
mind you, these days, they might haveta develop large face shields, too.

as for metroid, or nintendo for that matter, the problem is with nintendo, that they pretty much run their games on the hype alone, and don't market their products as much as Sony and Microsoft do, whom put a hell of a lot of funding out just for advertising alone.
The Gamecube failed miserably on the shelves in Australia, and some stores where i live simply refused to sell 'em. it was thoroughly ousted when the Xbox hit the shelves here, and i don't doubt that the xb360 will sell real well here either. however, i am waiting for final specs of the revolution, and its full controller setup, as it does look interesting, it irritates me how nintendo are being so secretive, since, after all, they haveta compete with the two larger companies, 'cept maybe in japan, 'cuz as we all know, Japanese are big fans of small technological things.

oh, and this may be worth a smile, the Playstation 3 has already earnt its nickname
"the breadbox" aka, the sony breadbox. :p

Putting so much money into advertising is why Big N made considerably more profit on the GCN than Sony and M$ made with the PS2 & Xbox respectivly [M$ made a loss, I believe]. Plus, you also have to remember that the DS is currently outselling the PSP, so whatever the hell Big N is doing in regards to advertising, it's definitely working.

Frankly, I think quite highly of the Big N marketing division for not going so low as to resort to spray-painting walls and streets promoting their products.

I disagree, I say it is Nintendo that are throwing out an apt amount of advertising, and Sony & M$ [namely M$] are simply pissing away so much on advertising that it dwarfs Big N's attempts.

'Tis a rather depressing situation. I find Gamestation has quite a large selection of 'Cube games mind compared to most places.

And DS outselling the PSP? The DS is wiping the PSP out. And they can't keep up with the demand in Japan. Many people waited in line for DS Lite even after being already told that they were all sold out. Nintendo have rather a large fan base over there.

I personally have never seen someone playing a PSP when I've been out, but I've seen quite a few DS's.

Nice to know they havn't lost thier touch on the handheld market. Looking nicer is never better, anyone remember the Game Gear and how badly that bombed?

On an even more humorous note - Gismondo. Hahaha what the hell is up with that thing?

Tell you what though, I'ld love a GP2X. Shame A can't afford one right now. :(

Yeah, Quadraxis was pretty easy compared to the Speed Guardian.  I dare say that the latter was even more difficult than the Omega Pirate from MP1.

If I get the revolution, it will be for only one reason:  Super Smash Brothers.  I am very curious about the gameplay for it, especially on the funky new controller.

You obviously don't know the "secret" to make the Omega Pirate stupidly easy...

Spoiler:
Get as many super-bomb expansions available, and hit him with those, right between his feet. They annihilate all the things on his limbs at once, and just make it damn easy to beat.

On my second run through the game on 'Hard mode', I worked that out on my second attempt at him, and he was down inside of 3 minutes. :)

I'm surprised to hear that the Gamecube is of limited availability in the UK and Australia.  Over here, it's got a good-sized section in every gaming-related store.  Granted, it may not have quite as big a section as the PS2 or XBox, mostly because it doesn't have as large of a game library, but all three consoles are pretty much on equal footing as far as exposure is concerned.  As far as next-gen systems go, the only one that really has any interest for me is the Revolution; besides the extreme desire to use that funky-looking controller, I can't wait to try out the library of classic games.  Here's hoping that they're able to get permission from Rare to use their games; no classic Nintendo library could be complete without the Donkey Kong Country series. :)

I think it's somewhat funny, since I don't think I can really be considered a Nintendo fanboy; the first Nintendo system I owned was the Game Boy Color (and then an Advance SP), I only picked up an N64 a little more than a year ago, and I just got a Gamecube three months ago.  However, I always seemed to love Nintendo's games the most; I'd spend hours at my neighbor's house playing DKC2 and Super Mario Kart on the SNES, and whenever I had the chance, I'd try to get some playing time in on SMB and Duck Hunt.  I very much enjoyed Oracle of Ages/Seasons for the GBC.  When I finally did get the N64, OoT absolutely blew me away; I'd heard that it was good, but I just couldn't believe how epic and alive it felt (that final boss battle kicked every amount of ass possible).  To top it all off, I pretty much got a Gamecube for the sole purpose of owning SSBM, a purchase which was worth every penny in my opinion; I've never found a game with more replay value than Melee.  So who knows, maybe I am a Nintendo fanboy, but if that's the truth, I'll gladly wear that title. :)

(To be fair, the first game I can remember playing was Sonic the Hedgehog; I loved all of the Genesis Sonic games and played them for hours.  The PS1 was the first console I ever owned, so I do have love for Sony as well.  However, I have absolutely no attachment to the XBox. :p)

It's true. I went to an EB to get a fresh controller (SSBM eats 'em after a while <_<) and managed to grab the last 1st party one in stock, while there were plenty of accessories for the other systems.

There's virtually nothing GCN in Australia. Went into Game's Wizards the other day, they've got a 5 metre wall devoted to PC Games, a 3 metre wall devoted to Xbox, a 3 metre wall devoted PS2 games, and a ****ing shelf on one of the displays devoted to GCN, which is usually empty save for the bad ports. Same with hardware, everywhere I look there's Xbox controllers, PS2 memory cards, and yet not a single gorramn GCN Memory card to replace the embarassingly small 1st-party version.
