Ok...so my "bored" post went pretty well. Here's a subject that has kept me somewhat busy. I've gotten interested in cars. You know...you drive them around on the road. Got it? Right? :)
So I'm making sure I have a very solid grounding of what cars are available on the market, what some of the technical differences are, how they work in detail, what the differnce between SOHC and DOHC is, and so forth. So for the purposes of this topic here are three questions.
What are you driving right now? (post pictures if you've got em!)
What do you want to realistically be driving in a few years if you plan on getting a new car?
Whats your dream car?
For me I currently drive a 1997 Intrepid. Not a bad car. Not great on gas. Very noisy on the highway from the wind so radio listening is strictly out. Its not my car either...the parentals infact. What I want to drive is one of a few cars that I've been researching: Mazda3, Civic, Jetta, Calibre. I don't really have a dream car at the moment but one of the Mazdaspeed's or something like that would be fantastic.

I have a job....its fully time computer analyst...but it doesn't pay a huge amount. Not enough to really get started.

1980 cadillac fleetwood / 2000 mitsubishi mirage
when i get out of college (2.5 years or so) i'm buying a brand new cadillac STS-V. this has been arranged already, as i've test driven one, got my savings in order, etc... it's my motivation to finish college. as soon as i'm done, the day i graduate, i'm buying it.
that's my dream car
-
I love to speed. But I will think about buying only if I have a garage. At the moment, I quite like BMW Z3 and Nissan Z ;)
-
Current; Renault Clio 1.6 (black)
Future; Not really thought about it. The Vauxhall Monaro is nice (it's basically a touring car), but it's a wee bit far over my price range over the next 5 years. So probably a nippy coupe at about £20k (bought 2nd hand of course, so it wouldn't be that expensive). Not planning on upgrading for a good few years, anyways.
Dream; Koenigsegg CC / Jaguar XJ220
-
Got a Mazda 323f at the moment. Wouldn't swap it for anything in its price range (or even a reasonable amount higher). It a nice car to drive, pretty nippy and it looks like nothing else on the road.
-
Whats a Mazda 323? It looks like a Protege or Mazda3. Probably has to do with naming.
-

But mine is white :)
-
I drive a blue 1993 Saturn SL. Her name is Betty. She has a manual transmission.
In the future, I'd like to own a BMW, a Porsche, and perhaps a Jeep for good measure.
-
How bout a '97 Subaru Legacy Sedan that I just near totalled an hour ago?

Or volunteering or something....lacking fulfillment for sure. Its this adjusting to the quasi working world while at the same time being in the same place I've always been in terms of living accomodations. That is to say, quite comfortable but not very different.
Really want one of these:
The semi-expensive tastes are genetic sadly.
-
Ford Model T FTW!!
-
I want a hybrid. So I actually have money to spend on something else later. :p
2001 Jetta right now.
-
I have a 1997 Acura Integra, as I've posted about before. It's Milano Red. It gets ~33 mpg and it's fun to drive.
-
Dream; Koenigsegg CC
If the the Stig couldn't handle it, what makes you think you can? :p
Anyway, this (http://www.rogerthomas.co.uk/thomas/images/Roger_Nicholas_Thomas_1950_Cars_in1993_Rover_416_1.jpg) is what I drive ATM. The pic isn't of mine, but its the same model and colour.
What I would like next:

Dream; Koenigsegg CC
If the the Stig couldn't handle it, what makes you think you can? :p
I'll get a spoiler.
-
Rather good of Koenigsegg to do that and send it back to them really, considering he crashed one already ;)
As for me, I'd be happy with an Aston Maritin Vanquish. Not the fastest car in the world but damn... it's the sexiest.
-
'87 Opel Manta GTE Coupe. 20 yrs old and more miles than the space shuttle so teh feck with MPG.
Don't really like most newer cars. Quite fancy the last, facelifted MG ZS

don't suppose the warranty would be the paper it's written on tho....
Got a Mazda 323f at the moment. Wouldn't swap it for anything in its price range (or even a reasonable amount higher). It a nice car to drive, pretty nippy and it looks like nothing else on the road.
I'm guessing it's not cheap for parts though......
-
If you were to go for an MG I'd say either the TF or the ZT (yes, the MG version of the Rover 75).
Personally, if I can't get the Roadster, I'm going for the 75 CDTi.
-
I'm guessing it's not cheap for parts though......
Not particularly but then it's pretty reliable anyway. Last time they did a survey Honda came top and IIRC Mazda was third.
I'd rather have a car that doesn't need new parts that often but charges a lot for them than a car with cheap parts that needs them all the time :D
-
how about a.... Volvo? :nervous:
-
If it's the S60/80 of the last five years you get my respect.
-
Meh, I drive a '96 Dodge Stratus, gets about ~30mpg. *looks to dig up pic* Hopefully this link works properly, as it's some random site: http://www.lascointl.com/vehicles/images/96stratus.jpg
Mine is silver, though. Nothing special. Lotta miles on it. Needs an oil change, tire rotation, etc.
-
how about a.... Volvo? :nervous:
Yeah, I like it too. My sis just bought one last month. A 2006 S40.
-
I drive a 1990 Nissian 240sx, my dream car would just be to give it a good re-paint and a few other things.
As for gas milage, it gets just so/so, me and my bro has allready agree that it has been engine modded sometime before we got it.
-
how about a.... Volvo? :nervous:
Yeah, I like it too. My sis just bought one last month. A 2006 S40.
Nice car, that. Volvos have come a long way from the estate-driving, cardigan wearing, golf clubs in the back seat image they used to have.
I have to admit not being keen on the sort of large saloon type cars, though; comes from only passing my test about 8 or 9 months ago and still developing my spatial awareness (especially having always driven a wee car).

Yeah, it is quite nice. It has lot of cool feautres but not very fuel efficient. My other sister bought a brand new 2006 BMW 3 series a few months ago and I like the look of the BMW better because it's bit more sporty :)

Ask her if it hurt when they stuck the hose in and removed half her brain though.

Not every BMW driver has only half a brain you know :doubt:
-
Just the ones I meet on the motorway then? :D
-
BMW's are quite popular in NY, atleast where I am. And most of them are decent drivers. Must just be Euro BMW drivers...
-
Could be. Its just that 9 times out of 10 when I'm on the motorway and the car behind me is being driven by an impatient tailgating moron it will be a BMW driver. I'm not joking about that. In fact I'm actually surprised when the car acting like a moron behind me isn't a BMW.
Maybe like shell suits it's a status symbol for wankers.

Heh. Here, on the thruway, the cars that are tailgaiting the most are Honda Odyssey minivans, and the various SUVs. God I hate SUVs. And I guess because Hobda decided to give the Odyssey 250 Hp, these annoying soccer moms think they're racing every little car on the road.
-
Not every BMW driver has only half a brain you know :doubt:
Must just be in the UK, then. BMW drivers are some of the worst there are; essentially inconsiderate bastards with a superiority complex because they own a well-engineered German car.
On the plus side, I had the nicest drive home today. Snow Patrol CD blaring, sunroof open, nice winding country (well, suburban-stroke-rural) roads, and the sun out-yet peeping from behind the few clouds in the sky so I wasn't blinded and you had that neat shafts o' light effect.
-
What annoys me about them is that about half the time I actually drive faster than they do anyway. So they're all over me while I'm stuck in traffic, keeping a safe distance from the car in front of me and then as soon as the traffic clears I'm off and they're eating my dust.
What really annoys me is that often they are aware of this fact having caught up with me once I've run into another spot of traffic 5 miles down the road and then they still tailgate me. :hopping:
Shooting's too good for these people but if I had a pound for every time I've wished for rear facing sub-machine guns just for BMW drivers......

collin if you like mazda and are thinking about buying one i would recomend that you buy a toyota. they have damn good engines and are cheap to repair IF they break that is. toyota has most satsified customers here in sweden

Sounds like a lovely day, I could almost see and feel it here, 3000 miles away ;)

I agree with Raa. Most 'SUVers' and soccer moms are really bad drivers. They get worse when it's either snowing or raining.

Random tangent:
MG X-Power: http://wawawoum.images2.free.fr/images/uk/mg/2003_x-power_sv_1.jpg
Something in the region of 80k, and they only ever sold about five.

Perhaps I was too subtle. I just, ever so slightly, think it has - just a smidgen - the general appearance of a brick that was rejected from an ugly wall for being too right-angled. But whatever floats your boat.
-

That's what I generally use. :p I like it better than the corollas we have and my parents like those better, so it works out. Although I practically never go anywhere except for the hour-long commute to my university and back.
As for a dream vehicle, Cat 797.
I'm not really much into cars, aside from Lego ones. :D

I'm inclined to agree. I'm not the sort to drool at the 17mpg 500 horse motor (perhaps I needn't compensate for other lackings), so I go by looks, and that car looks..... bad. To me.

The thing that strikes me is, hp or not, how heavy is it? Because it doesn't exactly look carbon fibre nor aerodynamic, and that'd impact performance and make that big engine seem less impressive in action.
-
i think just the fact that it's 0-60 in under 5 seconds, yet still a cadillac... makes it great.
and cadillacs these days are less boxy than they've ever been since :p
-
collin if you like mazda and are thinking about buying one i would recomend that you buy a toyota. they have damn good engines and are cheap to repair IF they break that is. toyota has most satsified customers here in sweden
Mmmm the Corolla isn't that much cheaper than a Mazda3 and I'm not nearly as impressed by it except by the fuel economy which is about as good as the Civic. My problem with the Civic being that its one of the most stolen cars in this area of Canada. Even the newest models with the disabler equipped apparently are still so highly sought after...
No doubt about it, Toyota and Honda make some great cars with great parts in them. All will be revealed when I do a few test drives mind you. But the Mazda3 looks so nice and all the Mazda drivers I run into with cars like the 3 or the Portege love them to pieces. Must be something they are doing right. I actually don't really mind a whole lot of it costs a bit more to maintain as long as its a quality car for the money and its fun to drive. I'm very much about enjoying the driving...particularly on days like what Aldo was describing. I had a great drive last summer on one of the local highways into the country and the sun was behind me and the whole place was sort of a golden colour and the road was wide open so I was having a great time crusing. Would have been nicer in a better car :)
-
and i still find this car to be awesome. it's a performance sedan... sports car performance, from a 4 door car. that's hard to find.
somewhere around 440 lbs torque
4.4 liter engine. DOHC, supercharged.
i think it's like 4300 lbs
-

It's not just the Mazda 3 that gets that reaction. :) Personally I love mine to pieces too. Can't put my finger on what it is that they did right with the 323f but they did do something right there like you say.
-
No doubt the 'Zoom Zoom' philosophy :D
I know what you mean...I haven't driven yet but just guaging reaction..Mazda does something that captures the people who drive their cars. It seems like they have alot of repeat buyers years later and a certain loyalty because of the good experience. I'm interested to see what its about. It may just be the very typical Japanese art of paying attention to the little things that make the experience on the whole better in terms of engineering...not sure.
-
Late 90's Honda's had that reaction too. 95+ Honda/Acura cars were great fun to drive.
I cant speak for the newer ones, but the older ones are ****loads of fun to drive. And I dont think I could be persuaded to give up my Integra for anything less than an S2000.

You're talking to a guy who owns an 80s Caddy.....
Having said that, the recent Cadys are the best they're made in a long time.
I can see me selling my Manta and getting a more "normal" car, as it happens. It gets a cool reaction but I can see the tin-worm taking hold in the next year or so. :sigh: Wouldn't mind a Focus though. Cheap to run/insure and a lively drive.
If you want some genuine advice Icey, I'd think carefully before you get a car loan. A car looses money at horrific rate. I'm still paying for a Fiat I sold a year ago, with another 18 months or so left to go. :sigh:
-
I hate loans. Made it through university without one so I hope to be able to buy a car without one. Probably not...but hopefully the idea will be to have enough to place a very large payment right off the bat and then pay the rest off at the quickest rate. But yes that is good advice and always good to hear all sorts of advice.
-
Icy; Get a Honda Fit, or a Toyota Yaris. They're both <15,000 USD, get ~40-50mpg and will last you forever. And from what I've read, they're all still fun to drive, despite having only ~110hp.
-
VroooooooOOoooooooom!
-
Am I going crazy, or does the new Kia Magentis look quite stylish?
-
Looks like a cheap Passat to me.

I worry about what happens when your driving cars that are so miniature like those and one of those SUV 40-something moms ram into you because they are trying to do their makeup, eat breakfast, and talking on a cellphone at the same time :D
-
The Vauxhall Monaro is nice (it's basically a touring car), but it's a wee bit far over my price range over the next 5 years.
It's a Holden, for the record, and they've discontinued production, unfortunately, as it'd be the only Holden I'd actually consider buying, though not for too long I suspect. I think they want to keep it exclusive or something, as it was still selling like wildfire over here when they stopped it.
For me, my dream car and expected car are the same thing. I'm going to graduate from uni, get a FIFO job on the mines up north and go straight to the biggest Ford Dealership I can find and buy one of these:
Ford Falcon BF model XR8 Ute. 5.4 litre V8. 260 kw engine with almost 500 Nm of torque, six speed transmission. It's around 1800 kilos unladen, so it's not exactly the lightest thing in the world, but the new ford engines really barely seem to care at lower speeds - acceleration is absolutely effortless in the BA the old's have, and this is the next model along and a performance vehicle. Best part about it is the price - $42 000 AUD for the base level manual, and still well under $50 000 for the full trim Automatic. Only weak link is the tray weight limitations - it's not a work ute, so it's only rated to around half a tonne. Still... lovely car.
-
Is that..... a pickup truck?
-
That is a Ute. Very different culturally, if not structurally all that dissimilar.
-
A pickup truck, in other words. I'm not quite sure I'll ever understand a desire to own what is, for all intents and purposes, something intended for the same sort of working environment as a tractor.
-
We've had a Ute in our family since... well, I can't really remember Dad buying the first one, so it's been awhile, and we use them, for carting wood, sheep, hay, whatever. While this particular model woudn't be much use for stuff like that (we've always had one tonners specifically for this purpose), I still like the versatility of the thing. You can still carry semi-decent sized loads when people are moving house or whatever, roll out a swag and sleep in the back comfortably, and still fang it on the drive up to Kal (600 km trip, through the wheatbelt and on into the edges of the desert, of which around 200kms is dead straight).
Moreover, you've never (I assume) lived in Australia, particularly. Utes are almost as much a part of rural culture as sheep and wheat. Besides, since it's a two seater, I'll never be asked to be the designated driver. :D
-
Ah, I forgot you all need flatbed vehicles in order to mount weapons against maruading biker gangs.
-
i drove this until about a week or so ago(until it broke down for good.):
1991 Mercury Tracer 4 door Wagon (manual)
now i drive this (but it's my parents'! No way i could afford it on my own! I'm poor as hell!):
2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid
it's a nice car, but, like all the hybrid sedans, it doesn't have nearly enough trunk space.
-
My car is so "leet" it needs a 9 in it. "Leet" to the power of 9t!
-
I bet you're just kicking yourself that you didn't get a photo taken 60 miles earlier :p
-
Yup. shows how much I pay attention to the miles on my car.. lol.
-
I use a 2-door Mercedes-Benz vehicle with a 300 horsepower, 12000cc engine, automatic doors, and driver. :D
-
'97 sea-green Ford Escort. Top that. :p At least it manages to get anywhere from between 25-30 MPG. It's actually a surprisingly fun little car to drive; I guess when you're that light, it doesn't take a lot of engine to make you pick up and go. Driving through hills, on the other hand, is another story...
Given my 'druthers, I'd be all over a brand-new 'Stang. :)
-

Today's cars are built with that in mind. So it'll hold up fairly well.
-
Plus, being that small and light gives you rediculous acceleration to get out the way if you see 'em coming!
-
One of the reasons I drive a Jetta is because some nut in an SUV actually did hit me once, back when I had a '96 model, ran a red light at a good 65mph. The trunk (boot to the Brits) was just gone, you would have figured from looking at the outside that anybody in the backseat was headed for Intensive Care and major surgery if they weren't already dead. Totalled the car. But the folks in the back seat were really just suffering some minor bruises, and I didn't even get that. Volkswagon builds tough little cars. (And it still has better safety ratings then the Fit. :p )
-
The VW Jetta is on my list. They have a new commercial about just that...they advertise and have a glamour shot of the car after its been in a collision (simulated of course).
I realize that the new small little cars are sturdy and robust little guys most of the time but I guess its a matter of feeling safe and I'd rather drive something a "bit" bigger. Not that the Mazda3 or the VW Jetta are huge cars because I dislike big cars as well. The Intrepid my parents drive is presently at the upper edge of my personal comfort zone.
-
Well I'm feeling fairly confident about the Mazda3. The question of course now is when I'll actually need a car and when I'll have money to buy it. Actually I'm saving and I probably could buy it right now but its just not realistic.
-
I would like a cheap car. Your cars are all so extensive... I think I'll buy somthing cheap like a... uhm... a Pagani Zonda C12-S Roadster would be nice. Cheap, fuel-effective... :D
-
Lets face it...cars are not cheap. The ones that are should make you worry. Thats my philosophy anyways. Most of the time you get what you pay for.
-

My car was cheap, and it's bloody great. Reasonably nippy, good fuel efficiency, handles well, comfy.
-
hmmm
I got a 1991 Honda Prelude, its red, its hot!
I would like to buy an 06 or 07 mustang when I buy a car...
Gimme a friggen ferrari F50 dude!
-
Me and my wife restored this car 10 years ago, but i`ve owned it for 22 years.
1969 Chevelle SS396 which is corvette yellow.. transmission is a 4 speed muncie rockcrushed, with a Hurst short throw shifter..
I used to drag race it at the local dragstrip before I got married and bought a house.. Not any of these on the streets, around here, and It still turns heads when I drive it.. :D
-
Out where I live here, this last weekend we had the open-road races that occur like twice a year. The state basically shuts down the highway north of Las Vegas for the day to let certain models of cars race on a 2 lane strip of highway. Anyways, what I saw there blew my mind. A Chevy Silverado pickup truck, which raced in the "unlimited speed" class. Put simply, those who race in unlimited can go as fast as they want without being disqualified. The tagret speed for this pickup truck was 170 MPH according to my time-sheet. (I took part in timing the racers passing our checkpoint) and.. it was awesome. Not awesome like a hot dog, but awesome as "the rapture" awesome. Seeing this truck come speeding down the highway near 150-160 MPH, was incredible. Apparently from what I was told by the other people I worked with, the truck was indeed supercharged, had an original big-block engine inside of it, tuned and such to make the vehicle move so quick. It had a lot of ground effects on it too which apparently help with stability and aerodynamics. The truck had also been lowered, and had pretty small tires on it. Anyways.. the sound, was incredible. You could hear it about a mile away, like a faint buzzing in the distance.. as it closed in on the checkpoint it got so loud that when it passed the time sensors, you could literally FEEL the air pressure from the truck hit you in the face.. Not quite a sonic boom, but incredibly loud compared to all of the cars that zoomed by all day doing the same speeds. It's so.. wow.. incredible.. I know that we have a video of the truck zooming by, and I can probably get still shots from it and post them sometime. Absolutely amazing. The unlimited cars apparently are 800+ horsepower in this race. Serious ****.
