Title: I thought I was sick of WW2 shooters
Post by: Dough with Fish on May 13, 2006, 10:17:25 pm
Until I saw this (http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=2880) video. I have always loved the BIA series, and this one looks too amazing to be real, but it is.

Huh?

Ummm... I'm not doing what you do by whoring out games specficially for a certian platform. This game is coming out for PC, PS3, 360 AND there is also going to be a version for the PS2 and Xbox. And, I think, the BIA series is the best WW2 shooter series these days. MOH has really screwed things up since Allied Assault and Frontline (although Airborne looks alright), and COD is nothing more than a cheap knock-off of MOH. Albiet a very well done knock off, but a knock off nonetheless.

It always looks better in the carefully choreographed E3 video that it does while actually playing it. It's like a moving bullshot (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/09/12). Mind you, not that I'm saying it doesn't look good, or very good for that matter, but I'm skeptical that they will be able to achieve both the level of quality and cinematic drama in-game.

You accuse me of doing it for a certain platform when this was one of the very games I was "whoring out."

It's actual footage of the game. I was extremely skeptical of it too, becuase it looks nearly identical to the trailer that was shown on the floor at E3. But after reading the writeups on the game, it sounds like that is indeed the real thing.

It's called Unreal Engine 3....

it's real time...just look at this...in game graphics
You'll see this in BIA: hells highway, UT2007, Turok(ps3), Gears of War, America's Army(upcoming), the list goes on...

engine runs on PC, PS3 and Xbox360
Unreal Engine 3 is slated to be used by over a dozen different companies in upcoming games, to be released this winter and next year

Mind you that most of the realtime demos running this at E3 are using dual 7900GTX graphics cards too...so the game will require some hefty horse power to run...but it is realtime

And of course, those shots were taken at completely random not-set-up points in a given game with conservative settings that the average computer would be set to in order to simulate what it will look like when you get it home. Oh, wait...

Regarding the first guy; is it just me, or is he rather... low poly? I mean, it's a display render so it should be ultra-super-high poly, but it just looks too jagged. The lighting is okay, and the texturing is nice, but he has too many corners... meh, whatever, maybe crap like that is just losing its effect on me.

Find me a set of publicity shots that ever does that? :)

Yes, well. Forgetting teh oh-so-marvellous-coing-to-cure-cancer-world-saving-most-awsome-UnrealEngine-that-is-teh-coolest-most-sweet-graphics-engine-that-will-still-be-teh-best-after-3000-years, and going back to the BIA. I am not exited. Since the fact is that little girls will be making snowmen in hell before I spend my money on a gaming console, I would be playing it on PC. But since the new BIA is also coming out for consoles (grrr), I fear it'll have the same problems many other multiplatform game has (from PC gamers point of view). And it'll propably be about clearing those same french villages over again. Like in the previous WW2 shooters.

Im sure it'll be most entertaining to play (like the other WW2 shooters), but it is doubtful it has anything really new that would be worth raving.

bleeding edge graphical capability is one thing, using it to convey a decent plot or storyline, is another.
aparrently bioshock uses the latest unreal tech as well.

I don't think so; IIRC it uses a very heavily tweaked version of the itself-tweaked Unreal 2 (whatever it was called) engine that they used for Swat and Tribes:Vengeance.

Actually, from someone who has played BIA on both my PC and Xbox, I can officially say that the game controls so much better on the PC. On the consoles, its extremely clunky to hold down a trigger key and point the reticle with an analog stick. Where as on PC all you need to do is right-click and then move the reticle. Much more intuitive and a hell of a lot more acurate. The towns in BIA aren't just random towns that have names of real cities. Nope. They are modeled down to the freaking brick after the real towns. The layout of the buildings, the color of the paint on the tractors, the piles of wood. All of them are exactly where they were back in 1944.

Actually, from someone who has played BIA on both my PC and Xbox, I can officially say that the game controls so much better on the PC.
But how much better would the controls been if the game had been designed solely on PC? Thought I admit that BIA had atleast decent controls on PC. But still.

The towns in BIA aren't just random towns that have names of real cities. Nope. They are modeled down to the freaking brick after the real towns. The layout of the buildings, the color of the paint on the tractors, the piles of wood. All of them are exactly where they were back in 1944.
Perhaps. But how would I know since I've never been in france. And they all are basicly the same. When all WW2 shooters try to be historical, the players end up running trought the same damn towns over and over again. At least in CoD you got to run around in africa. And there was even action outside the towns (the hill in the end). Even if it was really just running in a tube, it was cleverly disguised to look like open country. But in BIA (at least in the one I tried) the tube syndrome was painfully obvious.

I am not complainng, 'cos I think running in a tube shooting nazi is entertaining. But these games really need to come up with something new. Even if it is just a new mission type/enviroment. The is WW2 is big enought war for imagination. BIA and the squad command system is a good start, but IMO still needs improving.

To be fair, WW2 did have the slight advantage of allowing people to jump over hedges and lie on their belly.

To me, it doesn't look much different to CoD2. Perhaps it's the definition of the video, but it still looks somewhat scripted and not that graphically appealing. And the "Don't worry, we're Americans!" did nothing to improve my opinion.

Is it just me or is every single game with an American protoganist frowned upon in these forums? It's like as soon as it has Americans it's "OMG WTF NO WAI SELF SERVING IMPERIALISTS!"
Did it ever occur to you guys that maybe they make games based on Americans because the developers are Americans?
Now that I've sown that seed of destruction, the game looks pretty, but not partiuclarly entertaining.

Don't mean to burst your bubble, but they do that allready. They just arent those shooting gallerys like WW2 shooters are. And Russia happens to be the place where some of the greatest war games have been made. And they aren't afraid to do real simulators (a genre that has been neglegted lately), and other games that actuall require the player to use his/hers brains.
Not all notworthy games come from the states.

Well, seeing how the entire Pacific campaign was more or less Americans wanting to regain Philippines - their territory after all - and rest of the entire war being island-hopping from one ****ty little island to another, I'd say Ozzies were quite important. Australians were also key factor in New Guinea campaign, which was pretty damn important to entire Southern Pacific war.

One of the reasons for the backlash against American WW2 shooters is that they are stuck into repeating the same cycle over and over again. Normandy? Check. Parts of Market Garden? Check. Battle of the Bulge? Check. Maybe Monte Cassino? Check - and that's about it. Multiply it with 12984. If you want some extra flavour, you could always throw Africa into the mix.

For Europeans it's also quite funny how the Eastern Front is so invisible, save for Stalingrad. Of course the entire Eastern Front is much more K18-material than Western Europe operations and it's quite hard to find a suitable protagonists when both sides are ****ed up and kill innocents by thousands.

Quite true, it'd be interesting to see an attempt at accurately creating a game following Soviet soldier in one of the rear positions in the invasion of Berlin: Your mission; locate at least five (5) German women within the ruins of the city (marked by stars on your HUD mini-map), rape them, shoot them, and rape them again*. After this has been completed, report back to your commanding officer and get drunk on anti-freeze.

*...Damn, that was in rather poor taste, considering i've taken the time to paruse material gathered from diaries and journals kept by German women at the time... that s***'ll mess you up.  :blah:
