Ok, I have given up so far in finding a reference bible for Freespace 2, so I will do it the old fashioned way.
I am currently in the process of writing a film script for Freespace 1. I have the reference bible and a few other websites on my side so that I can near enough follow the story in more detail.
The problem I have is with Freespace 2. I need storylines, timelines, cutscenes and any thing else which will enable me to complete the second one. I am calling on everyone to help me with this.
My email is [email protected]. Please email me or post a reply.
Many thanks for your help

Quick answer; try the Freespace Wiki (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)
-
What sort of film is this?
-
Yeah what kind of film is this
-
yeah what sort of movie, lol. Freespace 1 and 2 would both make great movies, or maybe better TV shows like star trek because of how long and deep the story goes. but yeah a movie based on the game would rock, far more than those doom and resident evil movies. :)
-
Is possible? the history is too long for a movie, I think.... Personally I find very hard to make a 3hs movie about FS2... FS1, ocur in a year or so, FS2... well none knows... maybe a month or two...
-
Because of the number of missions in Freespace 1 & 2, I think it would do better as a series with hour-long episodes :)
I would definetly watch it :D
-
**** yeah
that'd rule. certainly a worthy project, This would be an awesome fan film project, that's if anyone feels like going as far as star trek new voyages, star wreck in the prkinning, and other fan films that are really good and free :)
one hour episodes would get the job done. the fs2 engine would be great for normal effects and stuff, splice that in with some good acting and camera work, and you've got a project that would take a couple of years undoubtedly. I'm sure everyone has thought about the time necessary to completing one episode. By all means i want to see this happen, and obviously it will be a labor of love.
-
Seems interesting enough.
-
certanly

I thoroughly agree with this. Freespace 1's history takes place over several months, making it very difficult for a movie to accomodate (unless it was done Star Wars prequel-style :ick: ).
I'm looking forward to this, though I also volunteer UT to write some of it. :p
-
Hey, yeah, set up in like trilogies, freespace 1 is 3 movies, freespace 2 is 3 movies. It'd be just fine even if the story is only a couple of months long. There was more than enough stuff happening. I think perhaps episodic releases may be better. So far freespace is about all this big universe with all this stuff happening with all your squadmates, completely through the eyes of nameless and personalitiless alpha one. I guess it's sort of like pulling a gordon freeman maneuver which is fine. It also does leave flexibility in the story to make it how you want it to also.
Sounds good.

which is probably why it would be better to make based on the FS universe and history rather than the missions specifically, and characters would have to be invented not just squad mate designations.
-
Seems interesting enough.
Indeed.
If you need writers, I'm probably willing to help out. I've got quite a few ideas for stories based on the Freespace universe as a large. Even though i cant write in script, I bet that UT probably could.
-
I like the idea of a movie, but PLEASE do not write it during the time of Freespace 1 and 2. Write it as a sequel, or at least a prequel, mabey even in-between FS1 and FS2. Just not during the time that everyone already knows about.
-
Would it not be worthwhile to let the guy reply before deciding what he should and shouldn't do?
-
He sure seems to be taking his time about posting a reply. :doubt:
-
lol he's probably thinking "oh nuts now I have to do it better just not reply" :P
-
Or he has buried himself in the FS Wiki he was pointed to... :D
-
Sorry Guys for the late reply :) My other half has been ill.
I am loving all the suggestions. I think that the general idea that everyone has is to do a series instead of films. I do like the idea, and I am glad I have supporters who follow me and would watch it.
The only thing is, how would I incorporate btoh FS1 and FS2 into the series, as FS1 ends rather well (I have thought of a great ending if it was a film) and FS2 appears years later.
Would I just do a completly new series later on based on FS2 or try and roll all into one?
And I would incorporate both the history (I may include a bit more on the Ancients) and a couple of missions which I think would increase TV ratings.
Let me know guys, and I will work with a few contacts to see if I could find someone to produce it!!

Another idea as well, maybe do the series and do a couple of movie spin off's. It could work..................
-
 say what a FS movie??? when, where ? whose starring in it? whose making it? OMG i cant believe i didnt see this sooner. Is there a trailer for it ? Whats the time events? Will it be like Andromeda or like Galactica or both? Oh and are the special effects as good as they are in the game cuz well effects sure add a lot of....feeling to the movie. :shaking:
I cant wait to see it? Oh please dont tell me its made by george lucas cuz he will bring some out of this worlds force to combat the shivans. :drevil:
On the other hand he could come up with some verry good ideas as to how to incorporate fs1 and 2
Also it would be kind of nice to see some sort of a mini series. 2 hour long movies 2 or 3 of them covering the fs1 era the era between fs1 and 2 or fs2 in this case alone and another one as to a sort of continuation regarding fs2 and beyond. Excuse the spelling.
I for one would...well.....who wants a brother in adequate condition..il exchange him for the movies! :nervous: Hope he doesnt see this :nervous:
But seriously i would love to see a movie regarding fs it doesnt matter which part it covers.

Calm yer shams. Even if he was making a movie, there wouldn't be a cast or trailer before there was a script, would there?
And Lucas? Are you drunk, man?
-
well ia havent gotten drunk recetly if that is what you are sayng. Also maibe someone along the line of the brothers who did the matrix or spielberg or someone like that.
I havent read through the post when i posted. Now i have and well what can i say go for it there are a lot of people who would love to help i think and it would bring some new light into what the comunaty has been dooing. And who knows if its good and has good public apeal maibe the game industry would do a FS3 .
Regardles simply having such a movie would show the love and passion that surounds this game. I sure felt it a couple of times when i was sure some members would rip mi head off for some of the stupid things i said regarding the game.
-
I am currently in the process of writing a pilot script for if it were to go into a series rather than a film straight away.
Do you think it should be based on the beginning of FS1 or shall I go a bit earlier/later??
-
well how should i say this i mean we have little to nothing to go on regarding the ancients other then some monologues and they knossos device to give us a clue as to thery designs.
Also you culd go a little earlier then the fs1 era perhaps in the monts gooing to the 14 year war between the terrans and the vasudans. anc continue somewhat throughout fs1.
Also if u said it is a series the it would be good to actualy have a few episodes regarding the whole era between the fs1 and fs2 timelinesposibli gooing into detalis regarding the ntf rebellion in its beginings. and why not continue on with fs2 and beyond.
-
My plans are hopefully to start a bit before FS1 then FS1, in between FS1 and FS2 and then onto FS2 completely
I can leave room for some movie spin offs, between them all, and who know FS3 could be an option as a game, which we then can continue the series!!!
-
Well you could start with the period leading to the creation of the GTA. But no that far back cuz well it would be a waste of good episodes. Also the 14 year war is not comprised in the game but rather its last months. You could actualy create a couple of episodes which would explain in to somewhat adequate detail what happened before the war. Thn slowly move onto the war itself then you would actualy enter the fs1 era timeline to be exact. (timelibne regarding the events as they unfold in the game).
Also you could add some sort off spinnoff episodes in regards to the Ancients and the ancients war with the shivans.
-
I think that's a great idea
I just know that this will be popular.
If you or anyone else has ideas, no matter how small, post them or email them to me.
Together we can make this big!!
-

If we were to get some great character development and stay true to the FS1 canonical storyline, we could start the series with Operation: Thresher, just before the events of FS1. Once some of the characters' conflicts there have been resolved or set aside, we could then move on to Ross 128 and the shift in attention from the Vasudans to the Shivans.
Going too far back into noncanonical or shady FS history (such as the first 13 years of the TV War, where the history has to be pieced together through Tech Room entries) could be difficult. We know very little about the Terran-Vasudan War, and since we already have a fanmade project devoted to working on that era, I would hate to see two conflicting storylines of the same period.
Well you could start with the period leading to the creation of the GTA. But no that far back cuz well it would be a waste of good episodes.
I'm afraid I don't understand. You don't want to cover the Terran-Vasudan War in detail, yet you don't mind going even further back in FS history to the creation of the GTA? Why can't we just have the same story that the fans already love put into action first before focusing on other sections of the history?
-
hmm...if your going to make a series, then I suggest starting with McCarthy (or whatever his name was). His history will have to go significantly before FS1 - yet not so much before that its impossible to state. He has involvement with a significant percentage of the plot upto the point of meeting the shivans - and theirs a lot of wriggling room when it comes to how his character develops, as well as his incarcaration in the GTVA and resultant trials. although the McCarthy trials were mentioned in FS2, their actual result and what happened has never been mentioned (to the best of my knowledge) and the fact is, anything could have happened. For all we know, it could have been a three day legal battle that made history in the GTVA for the amount of arguing and the law-changing decisions made, and McCarthy could have been released into GTVI custody, and done many behind-the-scenes flights aginst the Shivans - who knows, maybe even operations alongside Alpha 1? If you follow his character throughout Freespace 1, your seeing ****loads of action right there alone, enough maybe two to three seasons if you plan it out right. Hell, if you plan it right, you can introduce the next character into the story which will then take you to Freespace 2: Snipes. This also gives some interesting dynamic to the whole thing, not to mention exploring never-seen aspects of the GTVA (which your going to have to do even if you like it or not) the GTVI and SOC as a whole. Having it with snipes means that every episode is literally an adventure into betrayal, sabotage, rebels and most importantly: shivans!
-
I am liking the ideas.... I am having a good old think and will continue to write the script.
Anyone got any ideas for names of characters and sample plots?
Keep all the ideas coming. I am so glad that so many of you are behind me on this!!
Cheers and I look forward to hearing more!!
Andy :D

Well... Bosch is also a great one to base... Their are in service as a pilot in the Intrepid in FS1 (but none know the exsact moment where their joing the Military...), then their go to Intelligence pilot afer the Destruction of the Lucifer, then comes the dark part... the 32 years period betrenm the destruction of the Hades and FS2... when their reach high rank and created a rebelion, and stolen/get some informacion about a GTI Project involving a captured Shivan Specimen... then their start the rebelion and cause (none knows if intentional or not) the second retrun of the Shivans...
The only problem... none knows from where the Shivan come in FS1... im not sure if this is needed to make the series... but... all about this... all players have a diferent idea about this... the original point of the aparence of the Shivan... the only knowed about this is that should be in Ross 128... but what caused to come... none knows..
-I have a theory about this, is what I using in a campaing that I making-
The first come of the Shivans has been a GTI fault, not intentitonal of course, their go to Ross 128 for make a field tests of a few new prototypes of ships and weapons, they selected Ross128 for make a low profile, their dont whant that this tests could oberseded by Vasudans :D, a(their go to Ross 128 which other GTI science ship, a faustus, the Hinteing, (who is mencioned later in Silent Threat), the Ships are carried in a experimental new corbette ship... Well, the idea is, that the GTI go to a Nebula which asteroids to test a new class of Anti-warship bomb.... but what whappend is the their addidentaly hit a part of a hidden knossos portal (their dont see it), and activated it, when the portal start to work, their re activate the subpace corridor to a other system, but the asteroids in the field crash and destroy the portal very fast, so the subspace as very unestable, but the Shivans can trip in a unestable Subspace... GTI never, known what their do... the only that their see is a piece of the portal and the BOOM! their never known what causes... or what their are... and because this information as very classified, none learn about this accident... later, afer their exist Ross128, in the midle of the first Shivan attack on the installation, the corbette that carries the Ships is ambushed and destroyed in Delta Serpentis and the Avenger cannon is stolen from it...
- But this is only my idea, and very sure that everyone here have his own theory -
-
yeah lol everyone has their theories, some include the shivans were not born but created in the flux of subspace, so they don't really come from anywhere...
But yeah, I was thinking if you really were gonna create a series of movies the topics could be...
1 - Creation of the GTA, discovery of the Vasudans and beginnings of the war
2 - Shivans come and pwn everyone, basically FS1 story
3 - FS2 storyline here
I like the idea of movies following bosh though, although it would have to be planned just right to make it interesting, in fact there would probably have to be a main character for the audience to connect with, not just alpha 1 or some admiral.
Oh yeah you have to have a soundtrack like Freespace 2, it rocks :D the like echo'ing voices sound very eerie, gives me goosebumps.
-
You know, just have the shivans come through an uncharted or unexplored node, or one that was too unstable for terran ships to go through, of course, somewhere near the ross128 system.
It gets rid of all this knossos nonsense. I mean in gamma draconis was what seems to be specifically the start of the knossos network, you also get to see them one after another from gamma draconis on. Screw the knossos idea, it seems to be something people use as a convenience to being able to have the shivans show up anywhere in campaigns(other than the fs2 campaign).
-
I hate to risk jynxing the whole ordeal but........
How is this actually going to be turned into a film or series? 3d modelling? Live action? Animation? Machinima? Combination of all?
At least a hint would be nice. :p
-
From one thing i assume, probably the game engine for cinematics. There's tons of 3d modelling there. I would hope there would be some live action for the terrans at least. God knows who would do a cg vasudan, or make a vasudan suit  Probably animation too. You would hope a combination of all, that would make a really great product in the end. But i really don't want to go doubting this, i just hope this project if it starts proves to me a lot more capable than thought now :)
-
In answer to your question i am thinking of making it using live action and cg. This i think will create a better programme. I am taking all of your ideas on board and will be creating the pilot script very soon which i will let all of you read. Keep the ideas coming.
Andy :)
-
Hmh, I really can't see how it would be possible to make a live-action series or even multiple movies out of FS. See, even Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning too SEVEN YEARS to finish and we're not talking about a single movie here. So far I can't but help think that this project is way too ambitious to ever go beyong script writing. If the series/movies would be full CGI, then there is little more hope but organising quality voice acting for the whole ordeal is pain in the ass. Sorry to burst your bubble but I don't think it is going to work without serious financial backup, which again is unlikely to happen if the series/movies is supposed to be free downloads. For commercial series/movies, you would need a license from Interplay.
-
Well, I would want it to go commercial hopefully. I understand what you are saying, but I thought I have nothing to lose to give it a go, which I am. If things don't work out, then I am ok with it.
I will keep trying for this, and I am sure others would agree that it would look good when done :)
-
I agree there is nothing to lose by this endeavour. Also if done right it would sure as hell look good. I for one would definetly watch it. Good luck with this.
-
I am halfway throught the pilot episode script. When I am done I will post a link to it here.
I would like more ideas people, give me storylines and plots!
Thanks
-
well you could also write about the whole gti rebellion of course posibly rooting it to the beginings of the GTA. Also you could make a couple of episodes for when the shivans first apear but with regard to the ancients. something like a flashback. giving some clues and hint and basicly an idea on the actual end of the war and the subsequent demise of the ancients. well at least in theory. you could have say a 2 part episode in regards to the destruction of lets say a final planet at the hands of the Lucy. then slowly begin adding the shivans to the series. this would actualy help the viewer to get a clue as to the powe of the Lucy & co. and also keep him tied to the chair asking to see whats next.
It mai not be a good idea but then agin you requested ideas.
-
Let's not overload the poor soul with too many idea for which to do a movie on. There's literally as many ideas as there is good campaigns, and many were listed so far. Some that have been created (fs1 and fs2), some being created (tv warp project), and others not created yet (well actually there are a couple of campaigns set between fs1 and fs2 like sync :p). But lets not give the poor soul too many things. Especially with the length of time this stuff takes to make (star wreck in the pirkinning- 7 years (but also done on no budget i might add)).
-
Are you taking renders or what? Cos the WC saga trailer (with actors) I think would be a perfect example of how a Freespace film / episode should be made. Just dont let it turn into another DooM, Wing Commander movie, (music was cool in WC and Saffron Burrows of course <3 <3 <3)
-
I would rather be overloaded with ideas than having nothing to work with. Thats why I keep asking!!! The more I can get, the more episodes and series I can do.
So keep 'em coming :)
-
Mere humble suggestion, each episode could focus on a different role in the GTVA as a whole, Mission 1 could follow a destroyer captain, 2 a bomber pilot, 3 a convoy through pirate space, 4 a hangar greasemonkey, etc ad infinitum. If not you start out following a pilot in training just like FS campaign, (but with less like the training missions and more like the opening episode of Space above and Beyond.

Not really a realistic proposition for a TV series, though; imagine the cost of the sets!

Is he wanted to be bombarded with suggestions, I gave hime a couple, The world keeps turning :pimp:
Better too many than too few, etc

Better to have many than none at all!!!!
Do not worry, soon the Pilot episode script will be ready for everyone to see!!

I think that's a great idea

I would think a Battlestar Gallactica-like setup would be good, a starter movie to explain the begining, and the vasudan-terran war and then the shivans come in to play, then a brief first battle with the shivans and then the movie would end and the tv series would pick it up from there. :)
Then when you end the series. You pick it up with a movie explaining the war before the the actual fs2 game comes into play, and then making the game a series of episodes just like before and what would be cool is at the end of the fs2 series would be a final movie that shows the end of freespace 2, the final battles in capella, and then the supernova wipes them all out and that would be the end... unless... freespace 3 would arise next
-
Yeah, a battlestar galactica setup would be awesome. That show followed every aspect of the ship in a great way. It might be interesting to choose a ship to be stationed on, that'd be either a hecate or an orion. I also have no doubt that things in the fsworld would operate like in bsg, the fs1 cinematics are actually sort of comparable to the style of bsg. From the pilot brief movie, the pilots, and especially inside the shivan ship. Also you'd have to capture that element of fear real good. Man a series about fs1 would be kick ass. You've got to get "it's the taranis!" "omg, it's the lucifer", that's another thing that possibly bsg doesn't stack up to that level of fear. Both bsg and fs are fearing extinction, both in different levels and desperation. But, i think fs would end up being way better than bsg. But yeah, a show following the events of fs1 would be awesome, actually that one would be cool if it followed the missions directly stationed on the galatea. Fs1 is 40 missions long, a mission per episode or so, that's like 2 seasons right there :) Sorry, i'm just thinking how sweet it would be to have an fs1 series, especially the ross 128 incident. Fs1 had a great atmosphere of fear to it that must be retained.
-

I agree, that sounds awsome. movies showing the major parts of campaign and TV series can do the in betweens. Think if you actually do this then Freespace 3 will happen due to the sudden burst in fans, lol.
-
I hate to rain on anybody's parade, but I think you need some perspective here, so...
[wet blanket]This wouldn't work commercially. Freespace is a space fighter simulator/arcade shooter/whatever that takes place entirely from the viewpoint of a nameless, faceless pilot in the depths of space. It has a spattering of underdeveloped characters, a complex back history and two completely non humanoid alien races. If you take off your Freespace-love-glasses and really think about it, the chances of making that into a TV show are nil.
Don't get me wrong. I own a pair of those glasses too. But TV shows these days are made to make money. They make that money by taking in more money from advertising than they spend in production. That would never happen with this type of show. For one, it'd be immensely expensive. If ti was to be truly a Freespace show, it'd have to be based around pilots, which'd mean there'd have to be a lot of flying involved, which'd mean a lot of CG work per episode. CG work is expensive. Any time a Vasudan or a Shivan had to be shown, that'd be more CG work, and more expense.
Secondly, it'd have a hard time attracting and maintaining an audience that would pay for all that CG. Consider the fate of Space:Above and Beyond (A really good example - extensive CG, based around pilots, barely made it through a season), or, for a more recent example, Firefly (brilliantly written, fair bit of CG, didn't even make it through a whole season). Enterprise ground to a halt after 4 seasons (admittedly, a victi in part of bad writing). Even babylon five struggled, and that was during what was probably the heyday of TV Sci Fi - when TNG and DS9 were massive ratings winners. With the exception of BSG, there hasn't been a sci-fi series capable of pulling in a large enough audience to afford the kind of SFX they need in years.
Thirdly, it'd have to be character based. You can't have a TV show without strong characters (this is the only reason BSG survives - because of the characters and the writing), but Freespace is not built around characters. They would literally have to be created from thin air - utterly made up, and then they would have to have something to do every week. You can't do pilot episodes every week no matter how badly you want to - again, consider BSG - how many episodes have they really had that show pilots actually being pilots? And sending your highly trained pilots into every mission as something else (commandos, negotiators, scouts, explorers, whatever) doesn't make sense in a Freespace setting (since presumably the GTA/GTVA has actual commandos, negotiators, scouts etc. to do those jobs).
Fourthly, recounting the Freespace saga as a TV series seems a bitpointless, since everyone knows (or would easily find out should it become a hit) what'll happen next. I mean, sure, we all knew the Federation were going to win the Dominion war at the end of DS9, but how crappy would it have been if we'd not only known that, but also exactly how they'd win it, who would die, how they'd die, which alliances would break or change, what'd ultimately happen to all the major characters over the course of the show etc. etc.? Not quite so good, I'd think.[/wet blanket]
It might, might work as a movie or miniseries, where budgets are bigger and you can have pilots being pilots most of the time, but frankly I doubt it. There's just too much to fit into any format but a TV series, and unfortunately that avenue is blocked by stuff like (but not limited to) the 4 points above. But hey, if you're having fun...
-
No one said they were actually going to commercialize and profit from it (which would like be illegal). It'd probably be some type of free venture for right now. As far as tv goes, that's what like all shows face, which is that certain risk mentioned above. Either way, i'd rather see this happen anyway. So far, odds are against any of it really, this is going to be a huge test of wits, will, and commitment to get done. I can only imagine for the people who spent 7 years with like no budget on star wreck in the pirkinning. Star wreck in the pirkinning while a free venture, actually was a very popular in finnland for a good long time. Something like the 3rd most watched movie when it came out over there, if it was finnish. It was a big hit. But, this is entirely different than putting it on tv. It's more related to just plain old releasing a movie regardless of profit and seeing how many people watch it. I know very well that this project will be taking a long time, so goodluck who's doing it, i hope it amounts to something if anything even if it deviates from being any type of film at all.
-
black wolf... a lot of what your saying is a given, i never said it had to be EXACTLY like the game, im saying the campaign and what happens in the campaign would happen in the movie/series. There would be added on scenes of bosch and his crew... admiral petchrach and his crew... stuff like that. Scenes like "Good Luck, The Kings Gambit,Feint! Parry! Riposte!" and the last 4 missions of the freespace2 campaign would be really awesome scenes if they were made right.
-
I'm thinking, do as BSG and start the series with a 2-part 2h each mini-series. In my view, it would start aboard an Orion class destroyer, or perhaps an older design, based in Ross 128 system. Lets call it GTD Powell (for lack of a better name right now). The pilots would of course be the leading characters. The command officers and support crew aboard the destroyer would be secondary. The main pilots are of promissing skill but haven't faced real heavy combat yet. They do have to engage Vasudan scouting wings, and perhaps get a moment for the hot-dogs in the squad to show-off with a victory against a small ambush with bombers and an Aten or too.
Then, things quiet down a bit, and there is some odd activity observed on the part of GTI. Perpahs a few of their ships are seen in the system, heavily dammaged but still functional. They drop in at GTI Riviera to make repairs, saying that they got caught in a Vasudan abush. The GTD Powell also drops in for some supplies and some of the pilots head over to the station for a bit of R&R and encounter a few of the GTI crew. The GTI's jr. officers are acting real nervous and even pettrified. They manage to get a Lt. alone briefly in a bar and he warns them that they need to get out of the system as fast as possible. He can't tell them more as a supperior officer interrupts them and calls the officer "McCarthy". He tells McCarthy that they don't have time to chat with rookie pilots, and that their cruiser is on a tight schedule. You can hear the stress and threats in the undertones of the conversation. The GTI ships are only there briefly, before they split and reports have them heading into Delta Serpentis at basically break-neck speed. The pilots are then rather suspicious but return to their duties. They report their concerns and McCarthy's warning to their own CO, but he says that he contacted GTI himself with the same concerns, but they replied that there's nothing to worry about and all that. The CO then tells them to stop trying to push their noses into things, and sends them out to reconnoiter a Terran cruiser that hasn't checked in yet.
They find a completely trashed Leviathan class and terran debris all over the place. They think that the Vasudans are responsable, but manage to come accross either a cripled escape pod or fighter (if the former, only one person is aboard). They call in a support ship to recover it. This support ship is not equipped for rearming, but for craft boarding. One of the main character pilots docked to the support ship on the other dockpoint and boards it and is the first into the cripled fighter/escape pod. The survivor is completely nuts, like the pilot in the FS1 intro but worse. He's like all catatonic and spouting nonsensical phrases, think River from Firefly, but less criptically logical. He manages to utter a few erie phrases about.... what is obvious to us as the Shivans, but no-one undertsands. Scans of the cruiser's debris indicate that it was destroyed by some kind of high-yield torpedos. They suspect that the Vasudans have developped some new weaponry, but are puzzled that no Vasudan fighter or bomber debris was detected in the combat zone.
Some time later, word comes of an engagement between Vasudan and Terran forces, and one of the squads is sent in to reinforce. When they arrive however, all they find the the destroyed wreckage of both fleets. Both Terran and Vasudan fighters and cruisers are completely destroyed, and some of the cruisers are even showing complete holes punched through them, obviously from the Lucifer's beams. They also read a faint trail of radioactive fuel indacting that a Terran fighter managed to limp away from the engagement. They follow the trail heading towards GTI Riviera, and manage to catch sight of the massacre at long range. They'd powered down their systems to avoid attracting attention. They're ordered to get out of detection range and jump back to the GTD Powell to report personally on their sighting. Upon jumping back to the destroyer however, they find it under full assault from the unknowns (Shivans, obviously), but the Lucifer isn't present. Say, a cruiser wing and perhaps a Demon, but lots of bombers. They do their best to try to fight off the attackers, but you get the standard "there's some kind of energy field blocking my shots" and "my radar can't lock on" and "who are they", comments from pilots. The Powell takes a pumelling and is completely unable to escape. As it takes more and more dammage, the CO manages to send a message to the pilots that they'll try to launch escape pods. He also says that someone has to get word out about the alien threat. The bridge then takes a direct hit, killing all present. Some of the pilots try to defend the few launching escape pods, but are taken down, followed by the escape pods. A Shivan warhead then takes out the entire launch bay, so no more can launch. With GTA pilots getting splashed all over, and no senior officers present to give orders, some of the pilots decide that the only people that could get away to warn the rest of the rest of the fleet about the Shivans, would be them. A few of the pilots manage to escape the engagement, jumping to a hastedly-decided location away from the combat. A few who are late in arriving, report seeing the Powell being destroyed. In all, about a six Apollos manage to make it out. Most of the pilots are scared out of their witts, but one of the main pilots manages to calm them down and states that they need to carry out their assignment and warn the GTA of the Shivan threat, by jumping to the Ross 128 communication terminal (a Faustus class) and send the transmission from there. They jump in to find that it's already been knocked out, before even the GTI Riviera attack. That leaves them somewhat of low spirits, but continue to loiter around. The situation is compounded by the fact that without a destroyer or cruiser to jump alongside, they can't jump out of the system and escape.
Over time, additional GTA fighters and bombers jump in, survivors from other engagements. Some are experiencing shell-shock. Fortunately, they manage to all keep each other going. In all, they end up with 15 or so craft, made up of Apollos, some Athenas, and even a few Angel scouts. Corollating the times of contact with the Shivans, they realize that they're heading towards the location of a known unstable node to the Ikeya system. The Angel pilots are sent out to see if they can confirm this. They find the bulk of the Shivan fleet jumping out, including a glimpse of the tail end of the Lucifer entering subspace, but not enough for a full ID. There are still Shivan forces in the system causing havoc. Some of the pilots return to the new staging area, now in close orbit of a gas giant to conceal them, indicating that they've come across a few civillian ships that have been crippled or heavily dammaged. The group then manages to get some of them fixed up enough to jump, and proceed to rescue some of the civillians.
The head pilot also recalls that there's a Fenris class cruiser undergoing an overhaul near a supply depot, and considering that its out of the way it may have been overlooked. Using the civillian crews and a few GTA engineers rescured from a transport, they manage to get the cruiser working and even partially armed. During the repair process though, they're surprised when a group of Vasudan fighters jump in, with Shivans on their tails. Fortunately, there are more Vasudan and GTA fighters than the Shivans. There are a few Basilisks in there, and concentrated fire from the many fighters manage to punch through the shields on one and destroy it. It's squad-mates withdraw, but the concern remains that it won't be long before the Shivans return, now that they know where they are. Using some extra weapons and supplies at the depot, they manage to get their fighters almost fully repaired and rearmed. Fortunately, the Vasudan fighters agree to join forces with the GTA team.
The Angel scouts are sent ahead to check on the status of the Delta Serpentis jump node, which is the only real escape route, to see if its clear of shivan activity. As they arrive, no Shivans are detected, but they catch sight of a Terran science cruiser about to jump through the node. They identify it as the GTSC Einstein and are just about to hail it, when it jumps. As they're ponding this, a Shivan fighter squadron and a Cain cruiser jump in and take up a blockade position. The scouts then jump out before they're detected.
Knowing that the Shivans both know where they are, and where they're going, they're between a rock and a hard place, but decide to try runing the gauntlet never the less. Fortunately, the supplies at the cargo depot also contained a few Avenger prototypes, intended for testing on the GTI Riviera's experimental deflector system, but there's very little ammo. for them. Using the cruiser as bait, they manage to draw off the Shivan cruiser from guarding the node, so that the few remaining civillian ships can enter the node and jump out. Then, the cruiser and fighters have to punch through the Shivan defenses and keep the cruiser alive and functional until it gets to the node. They manage to get past the cruiser and enter the jumpnode, but they've expelled all their Avenger ammo. The Shivan fighters follow them into the node, and its at this point the fighters find out that the Shivan's shields don't work in subspace. Fortunately, the Terran fighters still have ML-16s in their other bank, as are the Vasudans with their VLL-9s, so they manage to slpash nearly an entire sqadron of Shivan fighters, though they have to deal with a couple of nasty wings of Dragons. Fortunately, they succeed in destroying all persuing fighters and emerge into Delta Serpentis. They report to the local flagship and give their findings, while the Vasudans are taken into custody temporarily. The pilots are briefing the Admiral in his office aboard his flagship. He is treating them and their story with a certain degree of patronising skepticism, but just then an officer enters the room and whispers something to the Admiral and hands him a report. The report is of the destruction of the GTSC Plato and the reported engagements with the Shivans in and around the Beta Cygni system. The pilots are given decorations for their actions, and the Vasudan pilots are granted safe passage home as the cease-fire is in effect. The GTA pilots are then reassigned to the GTD Bastion for their tour of duty. They may have expected their first heavy combat to be against the Vasudans, but that conflict is now on an indefinite suspension, while the Great War takes center stage.
There would be time for character developpment and conversations before the attack and during the lull after the loss of the Powell. The 1st part would cliff-hanger just as the pilots jump in to find the Powell under attack. There would also be some ambient discussion about Opperation thresher in Antares and the Galatea durig the early scenes. There'd also need to be time to acquaint the viewer (assuming that this would be made so that a total FS Noob would be able to get it) with subspace, both in-system and inter-system, as well as acquaint them with the Vasudans and the war.
The pilots that escape this, would become the core main characters for the series, but they would be joined by crew-mates from the Bastion to take up prominent roles themselves. Some of the Vasudan pilots would also become recurring characters, with one of them eventually turning traitor and joining the HOL. Some of the Terran pilots that survived might also be called to the McCarthy trials to testify in his defence, only to be thretenned by GTI who wants to keep their involvement quiet. Furthermore, the Angel fighter pilots who witnessed the Einstein escaping from Ross 128, contradicting the official record, mention this off-hand to the first officer. He ends up mentioning this off-handedly to one of his trusted friends and officers aboard the Bastion, who ends up being a GTI spy and gets word back. GTI eventually sees to it that both pilots are killed in action, and all their personal data sufferes accidental corruption.
Later episodes would also cover the destruction of the Galatea and the Vasudan homeworld as a season finale (though possibly 2nd season). In fact, the seasons could end with the Acts from the game. Season 1 ends with the Lucifer making its dramatic entrance at the destruction of Tombaugh station. Of course, this rules out the possibility that one season equals one year of time, for the characters. Nothing new in that respect. Bomber pilots would be on loan to the Galatea's strike team against the Eva and also witness the destruction of the Galatea, while the fighter pilots try to desperately prevent the Shivans from making it into Vasuda... until the Lucifer arrives. The 3rd season finale would cover some of the pilots being sent off after the Lucifer into the Sol jumpnode. The rest are sent too, but the node collapses before they can make it in. Tellemetry indicates they succeeded, but Earth is completely cut off, possibly perminantely.
This would have a strain on the remaining characters, as they may have loved ones in the Sol system, so they're completely cut off, resulting in some expected emtional responses in season 4. However, there's verry little time to mourn, 'cause the Shivans are still mean and big and have lots of ships. Fortunately, they appear to have no reinforcements, and they start losing ground. But they also have to deal with rising tensions with the Vasudans as well as the emerging Silent Threat ark. When the Krios is destroyed, the GTA Provision Goverment orders the Bastion to join the Soyokaze in investigating and fighting the rogue GTI. They also manage to have McCarthy peroled from his penal colony in Beta Aquilae and brought aboard to help them track down the GTI. There might also be an oppertunity introduce Bosch, as well as his psycho side. The finale would feature both the final engagement agains the Shivans, when GTA manages to corale the remains of the Shivan fleet and sends in nealy everything they have to destroy it. During this emotional high after completing this however, they get a message from McCarthy indicating that he's discovered where GTI HQ is, and that they have to attack NOW. He knows that the Hades is nearly fully opperational, so he knows that they need to attack before it can be brought online. McCarthy manages to get a seat aboard the Orff, but that ship gets trashed when the Hades' beam guns come online during the engagement. The Soyokaze is the only other ship that could be spared and its taking a beating. Its up to the main character pilots to knock out the beams and take on the enless waves of hybrid Terran-Shivan fighters and bombers the Hades is throwing at them. Fortunately the Orff which is on fire and going down, manages to ram the Hades' reactor secton causing an overload. In the aftermath, various members of GTI that escaped are hunted down and taken into custody, while McCarthy is remembered in a millitary funeral. The pilots are then split up, getting promotions and assigned as squadron leaders on multiple destroyers and stations. In the final scenes though, the seeds of Bosch's future rebellion are sown, as we see him talking with a few GTI officials he apprehended, in private. We see him later in an office looking over some notes both on Shivan communication, technology, and even data on the Ancients. He then sets these aside and turns to a computer screen where he's filling out the after action reports for this incidedent with the captured GTI members. The form isn't complete, but there's one line that has "status of target: captured" written, with the flashing cursor sitting just after "captured". Bosch then backspaces over the last line and replaces it with "destroyed", and fills in the line below as "status of target crew: terminated". This indicates that he falsified reports to conceal the fact that he's hiding both the documents and the GTI members for his own purposes. He then turns back to the GTI documents and continues reading, as the screen fades to black.
How's that?

:eek2: Um...I vote we go with that.

just two or tree things... First ammo for the Avengers? but, its a laser cannon, all are laser cannons, and dont need ammo... And the Avengers are a little secret for everyone knows about him...
Second... The Atena does not officially exist for that moment... I could be only a few prothotypes, but it should only fly it by GTI Pilots... and If i know well, the Only Terran fighter for that moment has been the Apollo, Angel have retired already, but I think some of them are still in use for scout dutys, until the come of the Vaykerie, so is ok, but just a note, that are older ships... I can recomended a "What Piece of junk" comment in one part?...
Third, The subspace part is completly imposible, first the fighters need to be docked to something for Inter-system jumps... The fighters dont have the suficient energy to mantain the inter-system Subspace jumps... So a fight inside is imposible, and more, is really imposible to do it until learn about the ancient tecnology to track down things inside the subspace...
The fighters need to be in the Hangar for the jump... but an Orion is too large for something like this... (that is why I using an experimental, and smaller carrier in my campaing, because is the only way to carry the pilots in/out of Ross 128...)
But yeah, is a great history...

From the FS1 tables:
"A rapid-fire, computer-controlled radar and gun system - capable of firing at a rate of more than 4500 rounds per minute - used primarily for close-defense situations - uses closed-loop radar technology to locate, identify, and direct a stream of highly destructive 45mm projectiles to the target. With the advent of shield technology, the GTW-15 is preferred over the ML-16 in any ship that can carry it. It's extra damage against hulls make it one of the best anti cruiser weapons. It has also proven very effective against Vasudan fighters. However, it's substandard anti-shield capabilities make it a poor choice for dogfighting Shivans, although far better than the ML-16. "

From the FS-Port tables:
"Dubbed the 'Lightning Bomber' by some of its pilots, this little wonder was the mainstay of the GTA fleet before it started developing its bigger warheads. While it doesn't have nearly as much capacity for bombs or the hull strength of its younger brothers, it is still in use today for quick hit and run strikes. Its relatively small frame is carried well by its fast engines, allowing it to achieve speeds even greater than the Hercules. While this bomber lacks the raw firepower to engage capital ships, it definitely hasn't outlived its usefulness against transports and freighters. A massive afterburner fuel reserve is its biggest advantage, the lack of good primary and anti-fighter secondary weapons, its biggest weakness. This bomber is also suitable for disabling a craft."
Also, there's no garantee that the Angel has been completely withdrawn from service yet. Why retire your best scout fighter, if you haven't got a replacement yet?
Third, The subspace part is completly imposible, first the fighters need to be docked to something for Inter-system jumps... The fighters dont have the suficient energy to mantain the inter-system Subspace jumps... So a fight inside is imposible, and more, is really imposible to do it until learn about the ancient tecnology to track down things inside the subspace...

We know that the Shivans can track ships in subspace, as that's how the Lucifer tracked the captured Taranis to Tombaught, so the Shivans following the fighter group into subspace is completely feasable. As for the fighters jumping part, there was a considerable amount of discussion of this fact about 2 or 3 months ago, and its generally accepted that fighters can make an inter-system jump (prior to the introduction of special drives during act 3), if its done alongside a larger vessel, allowing the fighters to enter through the same vortex. Its not completely cannon, but its infured. In the mission immediately following the attack on Vasuda prime, your wing is assigned to escort ships passing through a nearby system between 3 nodes. This is before the announcement of the fighter-mounted inter-system subspace drive. Often, Vasudan fighters are seen jumping alongside (or just behind) freighters as they enter a node. This is evidence of the parallel jump conclusion upon which I based this plot event. Furthermore (before someone points it out), it is also implied that the Shivans already had inter-system jump capabilities for their fighter craft, as when such a device become available for GTA, its said that scientists solved the technical difficulties they were having, after monitoring the Shivan engagements in the Beta Acquilae system. That implies that it was observation of the Shivans and technology they had, which allowed the scientists to develop fighter-inter-system jump drives.
But yeah, is a great history...
I'm glad you approve. :)

Umm great story. Can u make that into a campaign!
Besides some inconsistencies mentioned by ShivanSpS its great. I love it..!*drooling over the keyboard*
2nd post! I stand corected about the things above. *Still drooling no matter what*
-
Well, that's really awesome, kickass in fact. Wasn't bosch a pilot in the great war though? You could put him in more of as a character as a fighter pilot, if bosch was a fighter pilot in the great war (if i remember correctly). Another thing that i remembered sort of sucks for fighters, that they can only truly go to orions or typhons if they want to use a node. That still leaves only one mode of transportation for fighters that want to go through a node, which is the nearest destroyer. You could get away with a type of carrier addon for a triton freighter, but those didn't exist yet the freighter that is. You'll have to change the idea of getting the fighters through the node probably only by them finding a destroyer from either species. Or make a new kind of ship, but, i would go against that idea for reasons of keeping things the way they are, and it'd make things more complicated. Maybe you could actually replace the fenris with an orion, and then have a scene where people start manning turrets on the partially re-armed orion inside the node to shoot down shivan fighters.
As far as everything else goes, yeah i can see how they would still be using angel scouts in some backwater systems for recon still let alone anywhere else(it's cheaper). Athena prototypes is doable to, you know they've been designing that bomber for a while.
-
The whole post give me some ideas for my campaing for the Ross 128 event, but just a little parts, i already have the idea of my campaing, the only i need is time to finish him (ehrm, 20 missions maybe, much more if you count that for complete one of my mission you need to play thoght 2 or 3 files, only the first mission have 4 parts).
P.D: Someone noticed that there are 2 Hercs and a Medusa in the control screen of the Riviera station? (in FS1 intro movie)
-
I think you should stick to existing cap ships rather then made up ones for the time period. But personally I still think the original FS1 campaign would be best, atleast in my opinion because making a whole new story wouldnt entirely have the connection to the game. Personally I think being able to totally relate the story line from the campaign to a movie would be be pretty cool, given that you cut out the boring stuff like the first few missions. Having battles like the one with the tarantis, pluto, Mcarthy, and a few hol missions and the the last 2 missions would be cool from the FS1 Campaign EXPECUALLY having a battle in subspace... OMG that would be badass. Dont get me wrong though, your movie idea would make a really good campaign.
-
Umm great story. Can u make that into a campaign!
Sorry. I'm 100% comitted to TBP, but even it I wasn't I'd still be more focused on another campaign. I'd had plans for a campaign dealing with GTI and the Shivans, indicating how first contact actually occured. Its actually the first of 3 campaigns covering a variety of time periods, but its my favorite of the set. Anyway, events in the campaign, called "GTI: Untold Sorties" would be incompatible with those of the TV Miniseries plot I outlined.
-
He is sticking to the original fs1 story anyway. The shivans didn't initially show up in ross128. They showed up somewhere else, and the apollo pilot was running away from them, suggesting a previous engagement with the shivans. The story line would work fine. And, just go ahead with the jump thing for the fighters, if anyone recalls missions from fs1 or 2, yeah fighters do that. This is why explanations on why is awesome :D
-
Hi guys thanks for all your comments and to black wolf your negative remarks have been noted but have not put me off the idea! and a big thankyou to trivial psychic for your great ideas!
Please keep the ideas coming
Andy :)
-
Hm, sounds interesting. If you need help, I'd like to pitch in a page or two :)
-
So you got the rights where?
-
Because of the number of missions in Freespace 1 & 2, I think it would do better as a series with hour-long episodes :)
I would definetly watch it :D
I agree. This is a totally awesome idea. :)
-
Hm, sounds interesting. If you need help, I'd like to pitch in a page or two :)
PM me if you need help as well. Although im not as good a script writer as UT is, I really dont mind helping with all of this at all. :)
Btw, Trivial Psychic: that is just plain awesome :D
-
Forget a TV show remaking fs1 or fs2.
It would be great if they tracked down those who worked on the freespace series and took the storyline from them and make the show based on what they were going to do in FS3.
Hell, The very start of the show can be the last battle in fs2.
With the leading pilots/characters barly making it to the jump node, If that wouldn't suck in people to the show nothing would.
-
I'm glad everyone is enjoying my synopsis, but then again, I'm not the one proposing to make this kind of thing, so I don't want to either detract from his plans or attention. Anyway, there was something else I was thinking about, something that draws on similar events from the game. There would need to be a point where one or more of the pilots, fly a special-ops mission in captured Shivan craft. It wouldn't be the same mission as Alpha 1's in "Playing Judas", but if only one pilot is sent out, it could be in fact the same fighter used. If on the other hand such an incident involves say a wing of captured fighters, it could be preceeded by a capture mission, similar to "Enter the Dragon". Another Shivan repair depot is found (the briefing for "Enter the Dragon" did state that there was more than one) and the wing is captured in an inactive state (un-piloted and just sitting there either for repair or awaing pilots) as part of the attack. The special-ops mission involving the captured ships, could include the captured transport seen in the FS1 cutscene. The Azreal is loaded down with high-yeild explosives and sent in to dock with a Demon class, then detonated when it enters the fighterbay. Perhaps the explosion is just enough to disable the Demon and prevent it from launching fighters, while the Bastion and a cruiser wing are sent in to attack it directly. The players must cover bombers sent in to perform sergical strikes on the Demon's heavy weapons, while trying to avoid a little friendly fire from overzealous squad-mates. The Demon then ups the ante and calls in cruiser and bomber support of its own, while the pilots... well, you get the idea. It would also be a nice touch to refur to the events of "Playing Judas", before the attack on the Eva. References to a pilot from the Galatea flying a captured Shivan fighter, discovered the presence of the Lucifer and other vessels.
Another thought that came to mind while I was typing this, would be a thread involving the Vasudans resuced from Ross 128. A few could have been assigned as fighter-cover for transports fleeing Vasuda while the Shivans attack. Shivan fighters manage to disable one of the pilots' fighters before being destroyed. The transport manages to stop-off and pick up the pilot, before contining on to their original destination... a science station in Antares. The same science station which later comes under Shivan attack, and the escape pod crash-lands on the world that once belonged to the Ancients. The pilot would be there to witness the finding of the crucial data for eventual Lucifer interception.
-
Awesome read, Trivial. Kept me drawn in, and it really draws all of its context from FS, as it should, but keeps it separate enough for it to be its own story, parallel to the original.
I just wonder, Andy, how do propose to get any of this done?
-
Well, I have some contacts in the film industry, and I have been writing scripts for about 12 years. I know that it is possible to do this, and I am working all manner of hours to be done soon.
I appreciate everyones help, and I do hope that people will support me 100 percent.
Thanks

[commenting on dark wolfs rant]
yeah, its pretty obvious Freespace wouldn't be feasible for a professional TV series, CGI and small fanbase would mean not enough income. What it would need to be is a really really good movie based (I say BASED, not cloned) on Freespace 1 story and universe. It would need to be developed, contain plenty of interesting sci fi goodies to snatch the Star Trek fanbase. Character would need to be invented and developed. I want people to feel the fear when the shivans appear, and I want the movie to contain hardly any of the scenes from the game, knowing what would happen ever time would be boring! After all, this shouldn't be like the Doom movie, I don't want First Person sections except maybe for a second for if someone gets shot in the face (or something dramatic). Also I assume your not planning to have a movie completely in space with dialogue through transmissions :P
Another thing concerning keeping to the game, I think leaving the games could be benifical, like making destroyers having waaaaaaaay more turrets (I've always thought it was bazzar), including flak and other interesting arms (I know its FS2 but really I doubt there is going to be a sequel so lets put it in). Make laser run out of ammo if its more dramatic.
Anyone seen Serenity?
@andy: Just checking, you've played Freespace right? or were you just looking for a SciFi to base a script on? lol sry if you have, you just seem to be asking alot of questions. ;)
-
Heh, Well, I hope it goes well for you :) It's a very ambitious idea, you have to be aware of that, and remain aware of it, but if you can keep your enthusiasm up, then the very best of luck :)

i thought the FPS part was awesome in my opinion, It would be cool to have such a scene. ::)
-
hm, it was "interesting"...
-
Hmph. The character the FS movies would be based on would be the great, un-stopable Alpha 1!! The good guys never die, right? Okay, sometimes they do...*cough*FS2alternateending*cough*
-
Yes, that alternate ending when a1 doesn't warp out at the node and the sun gets dramatically dwarfed by the moon.
-
Eh? Sun dwarfed by the moon? Surely you are bemuddled in that statement..
-
lol yeah, I sorta prefer that ending more than alpha 1 surviving.
-
Eclipsed by the moon, not dwarfed.
-
lol - of course I have played Freespace!
I am asking loads of questions as I want to get plenty of ideas!!!!
I am thinking of continuing to do the episode ideas. I will start off with a 2 hour special then continue from there, but I will also be leaving alot of the plot open so that the chance for a motion picture is there. I will also be devising my own storylines mainly, and also using any ideas you guys have instead of basing it solely on the game, this will enable the audience to not know what is going on......
Any more ideas people??

I believe, like another good space opera, That Freespace has always needed a face of the marines. He should be a man of rank, and experience. Possibly a Colonol, Dekkers a good name.
In short, you NEED a Colnol Dekker in your show :D
-
it would also be cool if it included a scene where marines board a cap ship and take it over.
-
I don't get why everyone's so obsessed with the marines; Freespace 2 has always been about the space combat.
Why not write it with something similar to the old FSU storyline, about the fighting on a different front? Either that or write it from maybe the perspective of another pilot on the Aquataine? (spelling?)
-
Read back through the thread, i covered that already, But that shows that there would be more interest in diverse roles in the Alliance. EG if B% only showed sheridan/sinclair/whoever it may be at the moment :p doing office admin all day, Why would people watch, but we do cos it shows starfuries kicking ass, and omegas beefing it up, as well as security shooting naughties, rangers hitting naughties with sticks, And ivanova, Uummm............... Showering <hopeful>
-
I don't get why everyone's so obsessed with the marines; Freespace 2 has always been about the space combat.
Because 99% of us have seen Aliens?
:D
-
And that 1% are probably, "good at choosing wallpaper", "wearing comfortable shoes" (insert random profanisaurus entry)
-
You know, as with pretty much every other project, the number one thing you should do if you want to raise some publicity for this is release a trailer/pictures, once you have them. Because otherwise all that people can do if they're not involved in the project is sit there and squee.
-
It also seems to be a good idea to hold off public announcements until you're about half way through, that way you have content to show off your work, but people will have time to get excited about it and do a little "word of mouth" advertising.
-
I don't get why everyone's so obsessed with the marines; Freespace 2 has always been about the space combat.
Because it would be extremely boring watch just people shoot each other with lasers from ships all movie, soldiers you can at least see expressions and emotion as they crap themselves, lol.

Obviously you've never A) seen a good space battle, or B) read my movie :p

lol sry, Star Wars Episode 3 space battle was cool, but really it would get boring if it was 30 min long.
-
UT where can i read your movie???
-
If you're talking about the HLP movie, UT has it right in his signature: http://www.3dap.com//hlp/staff/Windrunner/HLP_Movie.zip (http://www.3dap.com//hlp/staff/Windrunner/HLP_Movie.zip)
-
Thanks ace :). There's that and there's the unfinished sequel, which you can find with a search, I'm sure :)
-
umm thanks gooing to read it now. :D Hope its easy to read! Oh and if its not good im coming after you with a shivan ! Either i'm crazy or the 5 cups of coffe are starting to tell either way I'l be back!
Also right about the Aliens stuff it just looks way to cool looking at marines and their horror petrified faces during combat. Oh and Hallfight is just to cool to neglect!
Modified!
Well i just read through a couple of pages of the HLPBB moie. UT you rock.
-
Ah thank yah. :D

Hallfight.
EDIT: Damn you nuclear1! Beat me to it. :sigh:
-
Well wouldn't it make sense to make a Freespace movie about Freespace, not Hallfight? :p
-
It would, but we would never see the shivans otherwise, unless the cinemas you go to have Techrooms,.......
-
lol as awsome as that would be, I'm fairly sure the cinema's wouldn't agree to dedicate that kind of space.
-
Fs2 is mainly about space combat in the fact that it takes place in the game as alpha who's a pilot for the gtva. Fs2 is also about military. Hell in the first mission of fs2 in the debriefing they said they were going to send down troops to the planet to retake it. GTVA has troops, the ntf does also. It's just that in space you're either a pilot or a captain. The only need for troops is security within the vessel, or to seize a vessel via argo or elysium. The gtva is a political, economical, and military entity.
-
I still think it would be retarded and a Wing Commander-esque departure from the source material if a Freespace game was made about a marine. FS is not about marines, it's about pilots.
-
That's true, that's what i meant, the fs2 story line takes after an active pilot of the gtva. If you wanted to, you could involve marines and even soldiers, simply because you can because it is an aspect of the gtva.
-

nah I have to disagree with you, Freespace was more about the universal conflict and struggle for survival ( :eek2: a storyline not just random shooting), not alpha 1 and the fighters completely. There is far too much backstory, talking about other battles on land, moves showing land battles and politics to ignore out of a movie. It adds to the depth of it.
-
Yea, but what was the game about?
-
Uhmmm where is our little buddy that started the whole idea. Haven't seen him in a bit.
-
The game was a huge story about everything else, and you're part of that everything else as a fighter pilot. what you do in a game, does not make it the only thing in the game. Otherwise some peoples only experience with fs2 is the skirmish mode where all you do is engage other fighters with a fighter as a fighter pilot :p. But no, you get briefings, you get assigned targets, shoot this, defend that. Past just getting those assignments there's a reason to them, and not just some random thing. Another thing about fs2 is to involve the player into as much of the fs2 universe as possible. You have a pretty deep unfolding story where the fighter pilot is not the only aspect of the game.
This is like people saying you can't make a movie about star wars, and everyone knows that star wars at heart is about the space ships and combat in space. But as opposed to flying cool ass ships all day long, you got a clone army going off without a single nutsack, and all these gay ass jedi, and droids in the background a long with the people who fly xwings in space and shoot down ties.
-

Another thing about fs2 is to involve the player into as much of the fs2 universe as possible. You have a pretty deep unfolding story where the fighter pilot is not the only aspect of the game.
The aspect of the game that you play is a fighter pilot. You don't play a marine, you don't play a ship captain, you play a fighter pilot. The other stuff is background story, it's what makes you want to play the game, which was previously mentioned as being a fighter pilot game. Therefore, if you're going to make a movie about the game and not the universe in which the game takes place, you'd make a movie about the core element of the game - that core element being fighter pilots. Around that you would build the story of the movie, which would revolve around what the game was around - the pilots.
In shorter terms: by your logic, if we made a movie about Mechwarrior, and made it about ground infantry, that'd be ok because the game was all about the story, and not the fact that you're piloting massive walking machines of death. So it'd be ok to make a Freespace movie about the war of the GTVA from the Marine's point of view, because the game was about the story and not about the fact that you were a spaceship pilot in an intergalactic war.
-
i'm not saying tell the same story from a different aspect, i'm just saying it'd be wise to include some of the other aspects to show that the gtva isn't just a bunch of fighter pilots, i think most people would figure that out, but at the same time, they'd at least want to see something like an argo full of marines about to take over a vessel being escorted by alpha1. You know, something cool like that. Fs is going to be about fighter pilots, but it'd be intelligent to involve the small things that affect the pilot (besides the enemy)like things to look forward to after flying, mission briefs, and especially escorts.
Plus what i meant by that phrase of involving the player into as much of the fs2 universe as possible was meant purely as what the game does besides gameplay. It tells you how and when the gtva formed and etc. That's not going to really matter to a pilot at all, but fs2 included game history along with the gameplay, especially with the story unfolding as you go through the game.
So no my logic is not about you're example of the mechwarrior ****. Mechwarrior really is about the mechas. Plus like in fs2, there's not enough information to go on how gtva marines operate besides hallfight(hallfight's all you get for that). About the only other thing you could do successfully with fs2, is a story about one of the gtvas flagships. Don't go too jihad squad on me now
-
WEll while I do agree that a FS movie should be mostly about pilots you can not neglect the other aspects of the game and its depth. The game is not simply about fighting this or that or shooting this or that.
Also who sais the GTVA does not have differnt tipe of arms based on its fleets like space marines who are lauched from a destroyer belonging to the marine corps or something like that. You what i'm talking about. Its stuff like this that would be cool to see.
Also I would love to see our fighwuving friends walking around the decks of a deimos or a Hecate!
Also how do vasudans reproduce??? Are there even females in that specie??
Umm nevermind about that. I want to see some skirmishes between marines or whatever it is theyre called and the shivans like in hallfight.
-

ffs, I happen to completely agree with S99, its the universe the movie should be about since Freespace is not just random skirmishes. You guys need to get your head around a few facts: 1) A movie about flying space fighters and blowing up stuff would be boring as heck without swapping to show the backstory. We shouldn't make it from a marines point of view (maybe for like 5 min, but not much), heck it should be from several points of view from several main characters to make a good rewatchable movie. We aren't arguing that you make it from marines view, we are arguing that you need to see the bigger picture.
That said, I got an idea for how the movie should start... I really love the ancients cutscenes on Freespace 1, and maybe something like this would be good (almost copy from freespace cutscene):
(solar system backdrop)
Ancients Voice: " And Then the destroyers came for us. They were like the others: strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others: They did not die. For Now we know our crime was sin, and punishable by death."
(Fade "Freespace" title accross backdrop)
I think it would be good because A) New comers will be like "huh? who are the destoryers?" and get interested, and then B) old fans would be "oh yeah..." and get goosebumps, lol.

How about a personal log entry by one of the pilots, but more of a retrospect written from the end of the Great War.
Subspace... it was the means for us to explore the galaxy. With it we crossed vast distances, explored, colonized, settled, but unfortunately the use of subspace has also gone hand in hand with conflict. First with ourselves, then with the Vasudans... it never ends. The Terran species had been exploring beyond our solar system for less than a decade before we made first contact with, and subsequently went to war with the Vasudan species. For fourteen years we battled each other across a dozen star systems, with nothing to show for it but dead soldiers and scattered starship remains. Each side, believed that the road to victory was just one more battle away. Little did we know that the war would come to an end in a manner and with an abruptness that no-one would have suspected, and that both our species would stand on the brink of extinction, as had so many before. It was the beginning of the Terran year 2335... and little did we know, the Great War had already begun.
-
Well I know how I'd write it, you guys can do whatever the hell you want :p
-
Thta's all cool. It's your production.
But i take you still misinterpretted that thing you went all mechwarrior infantry on
-
Hello fellow citizens of the world,
Just so you all know, that I am still alive and have been watching the forum with interest.
I have been busy writing the scripts for both a movie and a TV series. The only problem I have is that I want to start with the movie then move onto the TV series, how do you guys think I could do it with the storyline? I mean, I dont want to do the whole movie on FS1, I want to include FS 1 in the series. Any ideas.
The scripts are based on the storyline on several main characters and is mainly about the stories on the universe, I only have 1 scene with marines in. But if you have any suggestions, let me here them!!

Follow the Galatae, Her fight through the TV war (NBC Vs Fox) and ultimately her diestruction :drevil:
-
If you wanted to, you could do it like the stargate movie that goes into the stargate sg1 series. Stargate's a movie i need to watch again, but it focused on one really big and cool mission. When the movie was over the mission was accomplished. And then years later people came up with doing the idea for stargate sg1 which will be going into season 10(good show). But anyway, it'll keep you from turning everything into one or two trilogies.
-
The idea of a fighter squad going through a Knossos with variable exit co-ordinates, Who aqquiure a shivan wingman on their second mission (after blowing up an aincent of course) Would just be silly :D
-
I can imagine the patent and IP lawyers coming out of the woodwork if this actually goes anywhere..
-
Yea, I hope you all aren't expecting this to actually become a released movie. At most it would be a CG or live action fan film or something. Copywrite infringement and all that.
-

If one cent changes hands, we'll all be turned into postmodernist dollar bills.
-
Hey, lets not worry about the legal stuff, the other guy has to do that ;) Give him ideas, i have none :D
-
We should write it like the HLP movie...but all togther..
Basicly have one thread where we post ideas and discuss things and a nother where we actually write the stuff..
And I have to say, any FS movie would be about the freespace universe, not the game itself... possibly sen trough multiple viewpoints (pilots, marines, ship captains....you could even inster the Bosh monologues beetween some timed events)
-
Been brought up before,
Mere humble suggestion, each episode could focus on a different role in the GTVA as a whole, Mission 1 could follow a destroyer captain, 2 a bomber pilot, 3 a convoy through pirate space, 4 a hangar greasemonkey, etc ad infinitum. If not you start out following a pilot in training just like FS campaign, (but with less like the training missions and more like the opening episode of Space above and Beyond.
Is the story gonna start with the TV war like FS1 or jump straight into FS2 land?
-

Too many cooks spoil the broth,
HLP guys could do a shivan comedy spin off featuring Carl though.
Shivans probably act like aliens from omicon persei B from futurama, Watch Ally Mcbeal and friends etc..

why? Not all of us would write it - we would only comment and post ideas.. A select few with writing skillz would actually do the writing.

hmmm I seriously doubt Interplay or Volition would care, infact they would probably support it because of all the attention it would give the games that honestly have gone unnoticed

I think having a T-V war for movie then afters for the series would be boring for the movie, so maybe you should do the final missions to destory the lucifer as the movie, then the series as a prequel. (?)

Hmmm...let me think about that. No. They would care.

It'll be a laugh riot
(I'm sure no-ones done a comedy like that before ;7)

No, but close enough. Messy Terran Cop partnered with a straight-laced Newcomer. (I'd be refering to Alien Nation of course.)

Hello all wonderful people
Just here to say a quick hi and that I am still alive. I have had a major computer crash and have lost half my work :( I am trying to recover everything but this takes time. It was coming along great until that!
Good to see that this post is still alive!

I'm so glad I found this website and others like. Long time Freespace fan (especially the second game). I dug up this old topic because I was searching for any possible Freespace film. In my seaching I did come across something interesting... another possible Freespace film! Or maybe it is the original poster? I found out here: www.terrestrial-pictures.com for a filmmaker named Joseph Bat.
In the projects listing, it say Freespace and it is an Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi film, so I thought maybe it is our Freespace. And after contacting the person, it is! Sort of. Here is what he said:
"Jon, thanks for the email. Originally, my project Freespace was to be based off the successful game series, but things changed during the writing of the treatment. To avoid any legality issues, the 10 page story treatment I wrote for Freespace is not directly related to the original games, but inspired. The story is still about aliens who are threating Earth, but this and the title of the film is where the relation ends. There is one very big twist (along with others) to how I have written the story that I cannot reveal, but has never been done in video game adaptations. I think and have been told by other filmmakers that this twist offers a very unique approach to this kind of film. I have yet to send the treatment out, but once I do its my hope a studio, production company, or producer reads the treatment and then I can continue with the project. All the best, Joe"

Anywho, necro-ing a thread is somewhat frowned upon round here, although a least your post was on topic! So welcome to the HLPBB again and we hope you enjoy your stay!
Exits are left, right, up, down and fourth dimensional, all exits are sealed tight except for the 4d one which no-one can find...
In case of emergency, escape pods are pre-programmed to take you to our sister ship GameWarden. If attacked, flamethrowers are stowed beneath your seats, (however, due to budget cuts, napalm has been replaced with holy water) Plasma rifles are in the weapons locker, however no-one has acces to them unless they are an Administrator, Moderator or a Hyper intelligent shade of Blue. Please be aware that there is a resident Shivan aboard the station named Carl, (in the air ducts). If confronted by him, drop your lunch in front f you and back away slowly. Although as he has not been seen for awhile, it is rumoured that Carl got caught in a narrow air duct and has died of starvation!) Please do not mention the third installment of our favourite game.... this has led to many flamewars in the past, something which we do not wish to repeat.
Please be advised that discussion of religion, politics and evolution is at your own risk. Oh and don't take any advice from Takashi! ;)
