Title: Brazil
Post by: Sarafan on June 03, 2006, 10:09:22 pm
Out of sheer curiosity and the fact that I'm a brazillian, I would like to know what do you people know and think about Brazil? Also, if you have any doubts about the country please feel free to ask me, I'll try my best to answer them.

I'd say it's doing really, really well, all things considered. (although what's this about a city taken over by mafia?)

What do you think about the US?

Actually, iirc you're not our only Brazillian member :) Styxx, one of the Admins is Brazillian too, I think.

Well, São Paulo (Saint Paul,in english), the biggest and most important city in the country was recently a site of many violent attacks. The violence began after forty police officers were killed by gang violence (mainly the criminal organization Primeiro Comando da Capital - First Command of the Capital, PCC for short). Subsequently, the police officers sought to find the gang members behind the criminal acts. In the process, a violent situation arose, creating a clash between the police and criminals and taking the lives of over 150 people. But honestly, such thing was bound to happen anyway.

I've know and met some americans since I have some relatives in the US, so my opinion about the people is that they're pretty ok. But about your government, no offense, but its just downright ridiculous, altought its nowhere near the level of incompetence of our government.

Really? I didnt knew there might be another brazillian here.

And you take too many dives in football. There's a word you use for it, I can't remember it now, which basically means "getting every advantage you can, sportsmanship be damned".

Don't worry, most Americans think the same thing about our government (really somone needs to get rid of the Democrat / Republican thing).

Last check Bush's popularity was ~30%

oppionions of Brazilians... don't have much of an oppinion, generaly positive, I've sort of gotten the impression that most Brazilians are pretty good people, seems like your government is a bit screwy at the moment (the whole mob takeing over your main city thing) but I know a thing or two about liveing in a country with a crappy incompetent government.

Best football team in the world, rather dodgy internal league though, fair bit of corruption / inequality, nice beaches.  Oh, and samba.

Muderin' bastards? Well, excuse me but just because more people die here any day than in your little war doesnt mean were bastards!

Unfortunaly,I dont have much knowledge in soccer but I know it tends to be pretty much that. Soccer has a really interesting cultural effect here.

Only on Carnaval people do that or when there's a reasonable amount of alcohol involved.

Never heard of Archie McLean aka O Veadinho?  For shame.

Hell, we invented the passing game in the first place......at one point Scots dominated the english league teams for that reason, they were known as the 'Scotch professors'.

Actually, it was a shorthand for the Football Association from when the Rugby code split.  So it's only an abbreviation of the rules of one country - England - and even then only really applies to when the sport is played under a specific set of rules rather than in general.  i.e. 5-a-side is not 'soccer', because it's not FA rules.  Neither is playing wally or world cuppie - but all are unquestionably football.

And we invented the sport, so we pick the name.  Plus FIFA -  Fédération Internationale de Football Association.  Even CONCACAF uses Football for the sport.

We all know the stereotypiccal views of countires / home cities,  but lets give a residential view so we really know whats its all about, EG
In London (central) everyopne does not talk like mary poppins or the queen. We dont stop for crumpets and tea at eleven, (although an oily rag doesnt go amiss me old china). The trains are packed andd when we do get a bit of sun the few green places (on the south bank) get snapped up by tourists with bloody cameras :D, THere is not a bobby on every corner and we dont all have bad teeth. ;7
Title: Re: Brazil
Post by: Sarafan on June 06, 2006, 05:47:32 am
So be it, a more residential view of here:

In Brazil, most people struggle to survive, most jobs dont pay well and what you win is really not enough to last till the en of the month. Bad mouthing the government and other people is a national passtime for everyone, most people have no respect for others and lack much education altough if you're a tourist most people will treat you like a king. And we dont have monkeys running on the street like a certain Simpsons episode shows altough our money its quite colorful.

In America we're not all fat, lazy... oh wait.
Title: Re: Brazil
Post by: Mars on June 06, 2006, 02:43:47 pm
In Colorado anyway, we're all thin and lazy most of the time, when fall comes we're all in the gym getting in shape, then when winter hits, we're all in the mountains with our skis and snowboards. That just about sums up Colorado, and I don't know enough about the US at large to try and figure out what's true and what's not about them.
Title: Re: Brazil
Post by: Flipside on June 06, 2006, 02:57:36 pm
In London we don't all wear Bowler hats and talk in a camp manner.
Slagging off the government is pretty much a national pastime here as well, or, failing that, slagging off everyone elses government.
Most Londoners do not think that the weather is actually all that interesting.
We are very multi-cultural, and being an island culture, and therefore slightly xenophobic, yes, we do struggle with it slightly.

Hmm... Australia is... well, the most common description I hear from foreigners is "laid back". My perspectives from Western Australia rather than Sydney, which everyone assumes is all of Australia, but it really, really isn't. In a nutshell:

The weather's beautiful the majority of the time, Jobs are plentiful, crime is low. We drink lots of beer, eat lots of steak. Wrestling Crocodiles isn't the national passtime, but surfing, cricket, AFL and sport in general are probably as popular as they are perceived - i.e. very. There aren't kangaroos hopping about the city streets, but if you head out of the city you do have a decent chance of hitting one. Of course, most people never do head out of the cities, but, well, screw them, their loss. The government pretends we're an all embracing, multicultural society, but really, we're not - there is still a lot of racism in Australia. Everyone thinks Steve Irwin is a dickhead.

Oh, I forgot to mention that we all hate our government in the US too.

Based on the statements of people on this board, I've gotta suspect  that's not exactly a representative viewpoint for the whole populaion :p

Is there really that great a perception of skin cancer overseas? I mean, we're all aware of it, and most people are fairly sunsmart (Slip, slop, slap is, well, burned into us from earliest education and government campaigns), but really I've never known anyone, nor ever heard of anyone actually dying of skin cancer. people know what to look for and get them treated early, as a general rule.

Yeah, it's mentioned a lot over here, if I can afford it in a few years, I am definately going there, even if it's just for a holiday, it's been one of my big plans for a long time. In Southern Ontario Canada we don't see all that much snow but when we do its lots of it, quality of life is pretty good, there is an even mix between city and country life (usually the transitions are rapid from one area to the next), Al Qaeda is not hiding around every corner like certain US politicians would like you to believe, smog is a major problem, people tend to be quite diverse or strictly homogenous depending on the area, summers are hot, winters are unpredictable and fall and spring are confused.  Thats about it :)

A problem, no. Its not apartheid, or anything like it. But when were the last rascist riots in, say, america or england or new zealand? Ours were last year. They're hardly common, of course, but I think its indicative of the presence of an undercurrent of racism, built, to an extent, into the nation's history and national character.

I guess it's kind of hard to explain. Hell, maybe it's the same everywhere in the world, and I've just never lived anywhere else. I dunno.

We also have racism here (mostly against the black population wich is the majority here) but its more of a thing that people pretend that it doesnt exist, a taboo really, you wouldnt see or hear it much but its there.

The weather here is good, mostly hot the whole year tough but in other areas of the country its more diverse.

Trouble with the US is that, everytime I write about killing the President, I worry the FBI, CIA, or NSA is preping a SWAT team to take me out, I don't think that's as much of a problem in Brazil

Another social commentary, then:

Here if I saw an criminal, I would run, if I saw the police I would run faster, much, much faster.

A residential view of a US-owned Carribbean island (the USVI):

We're not hula girls and grass skirts. We have electricity. Our government is corrupt and innefective. Our police don't do jack. We basically fend for ourselves, except when it comes to tax time. We have nice beaches, but don't go to the really lonely ones at night - bad things will happen. There's not much to do here other than go to the beach, and that gets really boring after a short time. The girls here are mostly ugly, not pretty. We don't have many chain stores, our biggest department store is K-Mart. There are more islands than St. Thomas (the tourist depot). Living here is pretty uneventful. Everything is laid back and moves very slow (i.e. if you ask for someone to meet you at 2, be prepared to meet him at 3). A lot of people here are ignorant, low-income housing (i.e. ghettos) are right next to major roads and built up areas, racism is pretty widespread (hah, just try to be a white guy and run for a seat in the government) - except it's reversed. I've heard that if you're white and apply for food stamps, they won't give it to you. I mentioned that we're ignorant; we truly are. Our public schools are overcrowded and are not even accreditated (although this may have been fixed). We have a massive teen pregnancy problem; out of a class of four hundred high school freshmen, half of them were pregnant. We have a vibrant night life, bars close at 2 AM, it's easy to get alchohol at any age (easy as in walk into the shop and buy it). Late at night there's street racing, as everything closes down around midnight onwards.
It is pretty though.

I think that's it. Come visit! We need your tourist dollars!

You, sir, have just described the whole situation here (except the racism here is the normal way, that just sounded so wrong, huh?), now imagine that in one of the biggest countries in the world (4th, actually) and on a population of 185 million.

I think my associations with Brazil are corruption, soccer, hyperinflation, and "The Girl from Ipanema."
