I don't really want to start a flame war - rather I just want to find out more about FS2
First off, it was made under interplay so I presume that interplay still holds the rights to the series.
Second, were interplay ever going to consider an online environment for FS? I know that they sold the rights for Fallout to bethesda but retained them for an online option.. I'm just curious. (EVE is probably the closes anyone will come to a FS online game)
and here's a story related question...
The FS series view the shivans as a kind of immune system, preventing one race becoming the dominant one. When they reach their zenith, they are attacked and destroyed. So one civilization falls, and the next can build in its ruins.
If the races learned from each other, a la FS1 and how to defeat the lucifer, would there be a race that would eventually defeat the shivans?
:/ hmm all this and more from the never to exist FS3 I guess. Just mooting my point.
-
Interplay are currently too busy trying to prevent the repo men from getting in to worry about making an online version of FS :D
-
You said it kara.
It's sad but at least we have the moding comunity who have done an amazing if not herculean task of uprading the engine of the game and have produced many very very good campaigns. some of them might be considered even better then the original Fs1 and 2 campaigns.
Also I see the point about a race eventualy becoming powerfull enough so that they can actualy defeat the shivans. but think about this way the Ancients empire streched across galaxies yet they were beaten and exterminated by the shivans. The GTVA streched over 2 dozen or so sistems and yet managed to survive the shivan invasion. Not only did they survive but they apdapted and evolved to a level uprecedented in the GTA or PVN before. Sure the GTVA got its fleets smashed to pieces at the hands of the shivans but then again they managed to survive which is a lot more then other races have done across the eons.
So in a way the 2 shivan incursions and they subsequent containment can be considered tremendous victoryes from this POW.
Eventualy the GTVA will become strong enough so that they can hold theyr own against the shivans in a more decent manner but until then thy dont really have the means to severely damage the shivans.
Also the fact that they lost the war with the shivans in FS2 is more atributed to faulty tactics at the hand of the GTVA high command then technological inferiority. At least from mi POW.

Yeah.. we never got to find out why they let bosch escape for one...
Ah well.. We will see what happens. I do hold out hope for an FS3, there is certainly demand for one. I just hope that if it gets done, it gets done correctly.
-
I'm probably going to make everyone in these forums hate me for saying this, but in a way, I'm glad that FS3 never came out.
I really like the fanon that has developed over the years, the Derelict, Casualties of War, (and eventually BWO) type fanon is nice because it adds on to the original story very well. Sync and Transcend both literally scared me. Homesick, I dare say it, made me want to cry. The original Freespace campaigns never stirred up those kinds of feeling in me. If the FS story didn't have so many loose ends, people wouldn't feel obligated to tie them up.

Just found a comment from Derek Smart:
"If you twits had actually done anything, nobody would be clamouring for an FS3 by now.
Unless I - Derek Smart - develop an FS3 title, there will never - ever - be another FS title. Deal with it."
First off, who is Derek Smart?
Second, Why does he come off sounding like a number 1 a.hole
Third, from just this comment should I be scared he's eyeing up the rights to FS3?
-
A while back an announcement by Derek Smart (creator of the BattleCruiser 3000 series) that he was attempting to purchase the licence caused widespread consternation amongst the community. The quality of his other games, the attitude with which he treated the community when suggesting this and the fact that he showed no intention of asking [V] what they had planned for the storyline of FS3 left the community up in arms. Fortunately the situation appears to have normalised since then with Derek Smart deciding to leave FreeSpace alone and make up his own universe instead.

*slaps Hornet*
Don't you ever say that name again
This is Derek Smart
(http://www.reloaded.org/images/makers/145.jpg)
He comes off sounding like an ass hole cause he is an ass hole
He was eyeing the rights, but judging from his previous endeavors, I'd say we don't want his hands on the FS rights.
Look him up in the Hard Light Wiki (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki)
Also see this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,25248.0.html) thread.
Edit
Kara beat me
-
He has a very stupid looking face if you ask me. but that is just mi personal opinion. Also he saund like a complete ass hole!
Umm the comunity should get the rights to Fs put all the good mindes here to work on one single major endeavour. Posibly even ask V what they had in plan for FS!

He's trying to look pimp.
Umm... the community should get the rights to Fs put all the good minds here to work on one single major endeavor.
No, then think about what we'll be missing: the strength of the FS community is it's diversity of thoughts. The FS universe is now many universes, that's why I like it so much.
Possibly even ask V what they had in plan for FS!
It's been done, but :v: speaks in riddles and in mystery.

got proof? :nervous:
j/k.
are there any.. written statements from volition about that? i'd just like to read those riddles and mistery.

No, it's just somthing I picked up from when I was a lurker, somthing Kara or WMC or somone like that (you know a 10,000+ poster) said.
-
ummmm, back in the old times when i joined, both kara and WMC were at around 1k posts, and kara wasnt on the SCP team... then came the... ahem, unfortunate event *cough* and here i'm back :p
-
lol. then im relieved. number one a. hole who would have fudged it up in my estimation has gone. Yay!

Ummm. Unless we do ask :v: absolutely not.
How about we get the community together and write our own FS3?
After questions about FS3's release date this is one of the sorest points in the community. Posting a topic like this on one of the FreeSpace boards is actually more likely to get you insulted that simply asking when FS3 is coming out. While that question is merely naive this one carries a rather subtle insult. After all if the solution is so simple wouldn't the community have to be idiots not to have thought of it before? The fact is that the idea has been brought up several times before. It came up again shortly after the FS2 source code was released because for the first time not only could we make a new story for FS3 but also improve the engine to do it. The idea was rejected then for several reasons and continues to be rejected every time it comes up for many of the same ones.
* What would the plotline be? - The various members of the community have their own viewpoints of where the FS3 plotline would go. Furthermore we've had several years to become convinced that our particular plotline is the best one. It would be very hard to persuade the community to rally around a single official storyline for FS3. In fact the only thing that the community would rally round would be an official plotline from [V] but they continue to play their cards very close to their chests. Without this the community tend to go by the motto that "If it isn't [V], it ain't FS3".
* Who would play it? - The entire community would know large portions of the plot line so who would the campaign be for?
* Who has the time? - Most of the community are working on their own campaigns already. To do this would mean that they would have to give them up for the duration of the project.
Since a fan made FS3 would be no more official than Inferno or Derelict or any of the other campaigns already released or currently in production most people don't feel there's much point. Many of these mods are our own visions of FS3. There is no need for a semi-official one.

DerekSmart was black? LAMO ROFL FFS!
Im releived. !!
-
Umm good point everyone. didnt want to upse anyone. Also lets take a stand and march in front of interplay offices demanding that they release a FS3 or at least the story behind what would of been FS3!
-
...

The first time i've played the FS2 campaign was a few days ago, so i'm not very familiar with what happens there, it's more like a blur. But, in my opinion neither the Terrans (and Vasudans) nor the Shivans lost this war. It's true that High Command underestimated the Shivans, but noone could've foreseen a Shivan fleet so strong. The Alliance was able to stall the Shivan invasion, if they wouldn't have accomplished that, the 80+ Juggernauts would have crushed the Alliance (if this was their intention anyway). Now, the Terran-Vasudan Juggernaut, the Colossus, was built in about 20 years. I think this shows the superiority of the Shivans quite well. Also, there is little known about the Shivans. Who knows what they can come up with when a race reaches their level. Ah well, i guess i like to think about what could happen in an FS3. ;)

Command isn't incompitant, they're hiding somthing.
-
Care to make a bet on the whole incompetent arguement about High Command?? :D :P
But you are right Mars they are hiding something.
Well the juggs were only good as long as they had theyr beams intact take out theyr beams and you cand sens in the warships to finish off the Sathani. Altough i'l give you that taking out the beams of over 80 Sathani jugs is a most ipresive task to achieve but still its better then letting then rape the GTVA.
also the fact that they completely ignored the GTVA and went towards Capella tends to sugest that crushing the GTVA was never they true intent...this time.....!

Replay FS1 and FS2, the Shivans never fully postured towards defeating navies, rather they targeted systems and key points. Notice how in FS1 the Shivans attacked the major fortresses and the capitals. In FS2, we never hear about major fortresses but rather all about how Capella is a key system, notice it gets attacked. I'm not bringing up any theories in this case(too tired for that) but I must say, the Shivans never had a campaign offensive against the GTVA navy, unless you count the initial incursion during FS1, where the Shivans attacked forces on all front.

If anyone would be getting rights to the FreeSpace series...you can bet that the folks at Volition would. The last time I talked about FreeSpace with them I got the distinct sense (this was in person) that they very much loved the series that they had created and would do anything to bring the series back in the future. It may take some time....

Didn't DaveB also post basicly the same thing(through Sandwich)?
:v:
-
Would be great, they'd just better keep the Aeolus. :wtf:
Considering what the current engine is capable of, I wonder what they'd do to make the graphics more apealing, or if they'd bother, they know they have a captive audience.
-
I'd imagine that fs3 would be something more revolutionary than anyone would want to consider too much. In fs3 volition may have been setting up a system for fighters to have beams or something. More countermeasure weapons or something. Fs3 would probably have a different array of weapons period, though i think everyone would consider this an obvious thing. If fs3 were to come out today, it might be safe to say they would be designing a new game engine for the game. Technology today is so much better than it was in 1999, but then again so is the engine. Volition would probably make a new game engine if they were trying to go after different gameplay, which how different could fs3 gameplay be from fs1 or fs2? In fs3 it'd definitely be harder to be pilot than ever before with always having to deal with new weapons and forces in each game being thrown at the pilot. Since fs gameplay wouldn't really be changing other than weapons used, volition would be very intelligent to check out the fso engine. I bet that'd save them a lot of time when considering an engine for fs3. Volition would most likely use a modified fs2 engine for the game anyway(sort of like how fs2 is a modified fs1 engine).
On another note, an0n is pretty crazy in the linked thread about derek smart. Screw derek smart if he's an asshole, or like how an0n put it comparing him to an asshat  That was great.
-
FSO is based on FS2 which is based on FS1 which is based on Descent 2 which is based on Descent 1, which the people in the Interplay breakaways say they more or less threw together.
Some throwing together; I wish the things I threw together worked out like that. In the end though, all :v: would really need to do is modify the Source Code Project for their engine.
-
To the furthering of the descent 1 engine. **** that's an old engine
-
yeah, about maybe 12 years or so. ;)
-
Command isn't incompitant, they're hiding somthing.
Yeah. Alpha 1. The only known pilot able to single-handedly kill a Shivan Juggernaught.
On topic: I, myself, would only consider it FS3 if it were from good ol :v:. But, I would think that FS3 would probably involve
*possible FS2 spoilers.*
the construction of a Knossos at the Delta Serpentis/Sol node. And then ships warping through to find Earth nice and mauled by the ships that DID get through the node when Lucy made her fateful jump. That'd be... depressing though.
-
You know, those are some obvious spoilers. And that'd be a good storyline at that too. There's a lot lucifer fragments in sol after it exploded too. I wouldn't give too much of a **** about fs3 at all if it existed from :v: or derek smart(preferably from :v: of course in my opinion too), unless it sucked ass. And even at that, the technology for fs3 would be something great for the hlp community to mess around with. Like different weapons, different ships, and the game engine. Perhaps, but no one wants an fs3 to exist to suck ass to just mess around with it. The hlp in the end at an advent of no fs3 is much better off sticking to it's own guns than if an fs3 with a superior engine existed and the game sucked ass. I like to be hopeful of course and think and feel that an fs3 will come to eventuality when interplay fixes itself or someone buys the license. If i were a rich mofo, i'd look into buying the license myself just to have it, look into getting some people from the hlp together and figure out what to do with it, and then see if :v: would even want it to make a sequel. Or at least if :v: would guide and direct those here at the hlp to making an fs3 from that would be straight from the horse's mouth.
I'd imagine possibly another spoiler for fs3 would be that the gtva would be even more united than before since cooperation from the 2 species was powerful enough in devising a plan and stopping the shivans in fs2 from previous experience in fs1. Sorry i might be sucking a little to much hopeful ass myself right now too. Maybe i should go back to feeling normal than really good :p
