"The Taepodong-2 weapon, thought to be capable of reaching the US, crashed 42 seconds after it was launched."
oh, but seriosly, someone needs to smack this nation into its place, it's like a small child trying to get attention.
note, it was the japineese ambasitor that brought this into the UN security councle.

Hmm, it seems that they have lauched a 7th missile...

Maybe North Korea just needs a hug? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/5149540.stm)

Looks like the Taepodong 2 was just an overhyped dud.
-
A pity. I liked the idea of the apocalypse being initiated by something with "dong" in its name.
-
I have a pretty good feeling that there was a long line of "experts" predicting doom and gloom if NK launched that missile.
It also would have been interesting to see how well the "missile defence" system would have worked against a real target and not a pre-planned, rigged, test launch. Maybe in a few months we will get another chance.
-
The leader is a raving loony, but his scientists aren't. That's usually a bad combination. Look at Fred Phelps, he does what he does more to simply be paid attention to than out of any real conviction, he's figured out that being a complete bastard is a good way of being noticed. The leader of S.Korea is deliberately baiting Japan, in my opinion. When he first announced his nuclear attentions, he was complaining about being watched by the world, now he is complaining that no-one is looking at him, hence this recent 'tantrum'.
It's a pity, North Korea has a lot of potential, but the legacy left by this guy is going to take years to repair in that country, nukes or not.

Stanley Kubrick's rolling in his grave. Can't you hear him?

His scientists have probably been shot by now

Well, given that it barely works against the pre-planned ones.........
-
so long as Bush doesn't get all excitied and start more of that pre-emptive stuff. Imagine the irony if WW3 and The Apocolypse had began over a missile that turned out to be a dud.
-
North Korea is just taking advantage of the state of American politics to do **** it would normally be punished for doing.
The US is physically incapable of starting another war right now (or even just moving against a nation generally) and would completely collapse into anarchy if it tried. So North Korea is just rushing through with technology tests, brinkmanship diplomacy and generally calling the US a ***** at a time when the US can't possibly respond.
-
Japan's probably not real happy right now; they're in range of the older stuff easily. (So is Guam, for that matter, and that's still a US possession.) But then again, that's why they bought those Burke IIAs and SM-2ERs...I suppose they're happy about having them.
Besides, at the rate North Korea is going the US won't be the ones who smack them down. Chinese invasion ftw.
-
China actually might.
Just to get their troops some proper combat experience, thin out the herd, gain some strategic land, improve international opinion and show their strength.

Nah, North Korea is a great proxy for China. So long as it remains the number one concern for the US, it improves Chinas leeway over Taiwan and their diplomatic influence (China is probably the only country that can tell N.K. what to do...or at least what not).

They don't even listen to China anymore; China told them not to do this.
-
Yes, China "told" them "not" to annoy the Americans........

Some analysts figure that China probably said "do whatever with the missile". China is playing it very cool right now...they are in a good position really not being involved in any major conflicts right now and with a booming economy.

It would also deal with the illegal immigration issue.....

Oil, though.

I'm sure fallout would be a factor depending on possible payloads also.........
-
If US were funny about this. Thanking N.Korea and saying how they actually feel a lot safer after the tests :).
-
I love the Daily Show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa1Jy2iDHFs)

Do the North Koreans know that their weapons work? I mean, unless they want to ruin their country further through nuclear bomb testing how would they know it would work?

I sincerely hope to God for N. Korea's sake that isn't a battleship.

i think he was refering to me. im safe according to that map it would only reach anchorage which is a sweeter target that juneau anyway thanks to elmendorf afb (and i didnt live far from it at one point). we have oil yes, that the liberals wont let us touch. alaskas poor enough as it is, unlike say texas which has been allowed to become rich off of its oil reserves. even the alaskan natives say develop this place. while the hippies and overstoned conservatives here wont let em put so much as a new hiway in. you could blow up the whole state and it wouldnt hurt the us a fraction as much as the wtc attack did. and if they did nuke us, north korea would be the name of a large crater, rather than a country.

This is North Korea:
