North Korea has a death wish
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5148648.stm?ls

"The Taepodong-2 weapon, thought to be capable of reaching the US, crashed 42 seconds after it was launched."

oh, but seriosly, someone needs to smack this nation into its place, it's like a small child trying to get attention.

note, it was the japineese ambasitor that brought this into the UN security councle.

Looks like the Taepodong 2 was just an overhyped dud.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

A pity. I liked the idea of the apocalypse being initiated by something with "dong" in its name.

Re: North Korea has a death wish
I have a pretty good feeling that there was a long line of "experts" predicting doom and gloom if NK launched that missile.

It also would have been interesting to see how well the "missile defence" system would have worked against a real target and not a pre-planned, rigged, test launch. Maybe in a few months we will get another chance.

Re: North Korea has a death wish
The leader is a raving loony, but his scientists aren't. That's usually a bad combination. Look at Fred Phelps, he does what he does more to simply be paid attention to than out of any real conviction, he's figured out that being a complete bastard is a good way of being noticed. The leader of S.Korea is deliberately baiting Japan, in my opinion. When he first announced his nuclear attentions, he was complaining about being watched by the world, now he is complaining that no-one is looking at him, hence this recent 'tantrum'.
It's a pity, North Korea has a lot of potential, but the legacy left by this guy is going to take years to repair in that country, nukes or not.

Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.

Well, given that it barely works against the pre-planned ones.........

so long as Bush doesn't get all excitied and start more of that pre-emptive stuff. Imagine the irony if WW3 and The Apocolypse had began over a missile that turned out to be a dud.

Re: North Korea has a death wish
North Korea is just taking advantage of the state of American politics to do **** it would normally be punished for doing.

The US is physically incapable of starting another war right now (or even just moving against a nation generally) and would completely collapse into anarchy if it tried. So North Korea is just rushing through with technology tests, brinkmanship diplomacy and generally calling the US a ***** at a time when the US can't possibly respond.

Re: North Korea has a death wish
Japan's probably not real happy right now; they're in range of the older stuff easily. (So is Guam, for that matter, and that's still a US possession.) But then again, that's why they bought those Burke IIAs and SM-2ERs...I suppose they're happy about having them.

Besides, at the rate North Korea is going the US won't be the ones who smack them down. Chinese invasion ftw.

Re: North Korea has a death wish
China actually might.

Just to get their troops some proper combat experience, thin out the herd, gain some strategic land, improve international opinion and show their strength.

Nah, North Korea is a great proxy for China.  So long as it remains the number one concern for the US, it improves Chinas leeway over Taiwan and their diplomatic influence (China is probably the only country that can tell N.K. what to do...or at least what not).

They don't even listen to China anymore; China told them not to do this.
