I'll take a stab and say that you're talking about the ominous atmosphere surrounding August 22nd, the date that Iran has given for replying to the UN's nuclear demands.

If I'm right, I so get like a dozen cookies.

Or a dozen atomic weapons detonated on your doorstep for figuring out thier evil plan.
Not like they'ld go ahead with it anyway. Terrorism is called terrorism for a reason.

Some people actually believe Iran and Israel will enter a nuclear war (Iran presumably having borrowed some nukes for the day) at this date.  Which would be ****, because it's a couple of weeks before my hols are booked for.

Ahmananajenijihad is going to challenge Bush to a Sword of the Stars game on the 22nd.

Unfortunately both will be annihilated by my intervening Liir fleet, which over the in-game chat will constantly demand that they accept Origin.

Wow. Here I thought it'd at least take a few days (for people to see it was a daily countdown and not hourly or something), but you go and ruin all my fun, not in a day, nor even an hour, but in 31.5 minutes??!?

/me hands Rictor a gift voucher for Krispy Kreme

Sorry, we're all out of cookies. :p

Anyway, yes, I was referring to Aug. 22nd. For those who don't know, and from what I understand, this year, August 22nd is the day on the Islamic calendar when tradition holds that Mohammed ascended to heaven from Jerusalem, and Jerusalem was bathed in a great light. Feel free to Google "August 22", but I'll tell you right now that according to Islamic scholars, it looks like something big might go down on that day. Read a few of the articles, they're pretty freaky. There's also the whole "Hidden Imam" thing, which is apparently an Islamic messiah-type event.

In plain terms, some people think that Ahmadeninjhad might be planning to nuke Jerusalem on that day... or at least try to. It would certainly bathe Jerusalem in "a great light". Sounds pretty farfetched, I admit... Jerusalem, location of the 3rd holiest site in Islam? Nuked by a Muslim? The thing is, if he truly believes that "the end is nigh", and by nuking Jerusalem he'll help move things along... :nervous:

Anyway, I'd write a will or something, but I don't think that any of my possessions will survive a nuclear blast. I guess the only thing I can say is this: If I'm incincerated, my postcount goes to Setekh. :p

Two. :nervous:

Iran began major war exercises the other day (http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?c=JPArticle&cid=1154525908097&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull), to last 5 weeks IIRC. I've also been hearing various rumors around, the most persistent one being that Iran has 3 suitcase nukes they plan on detonating on Aug 22nd in Washington DC, New York City, and Jerusalem. Sounds like nothing more than a rumor to me - the type of rumor that always crops up every few years revolving around whichever Evil Dictator™ has media focus at the time. Still, it has a slightly more legitimate tone this time around, purely due to the whole Aug. 22nd thing. To quote a character 75% of us are probably familiar with, "Time vill tell... sooner or later.... time vill tell."
Title: Re: The Countdown
Post by: Flipside on August 20, 2006, 02:42:27 pm
Most of those suitcase nukes would need a fair bit of work to prime nowadays to be honest, whilst the bomb may still be 'live', the half-life of most detonators is only about a decade, so I suspect those suitcase bombs would, even if Iran had one, be in no fit state to use without work. Though, yeah, I agree that sounds more like 'bloke down the pub' stuff.
I don't think Iran would be crazy enough to do something like that with a missile either, I don't think he has a missile that could penetrate Israels' Air defences anyway. Rockets are one thing, but Israel has Patriot systems or the like iirc? They can't deal with Rockets but they've proven to be very effective against the older, larger missiles. Besides, this time you'd know which direction it was coming from.

To be honest, if he was crazy enough to try this, I think you'd be surprised at the rest of the Middle East's response.
Title: Re: The Countdown
Post by: Sandwich on August 20, 2006, 03:16:49 pm
The Patriot? Don't make me laugh. The Patriots anti-missle batteries are the worst at what they (don't) do I've ever seen. If we had the funding (thank you, government... :doubt: ), we'd be able to have widespread, effective defensive measures, such as the Arrow I/II and the Nautilus.
Title: Re: The Countdown
Post by: Flipside on August 20, 2006, 03:23:35 pm
I know the Patriot proved pretty useless against faster missiles, but I don't see Iran being able to get together a missile that would be particuarly hard to shoot down. Arrow or Nautilus would be better, I'd admit.
Title: Re: The Countdown
Post by: Sandwich on August 20, 2006, 03:35:31 pm
The Patriot did next to nothing in the Gulf War (1991)... do Scuds qualify as "faster missles"?
Title: Re: The Countdown
Post by: Flipside on August 20, 2006, 03:43:18 pm
Nope Scuds are pretty slow, sort of like the Volkswagon Beetles of the Missile fraternity ;) They were massively media-pushed during the Gulf War, though I knew there was technical difficulties and they weren't as reliable as they were made out to be, but I still got the impression they weren't a total failure.
Still, you guys have been using them for longer, so you'd probably have a better idea. The UK still uses the Sea Wasp as Anti-Missile defences on its ships, oddly enough, damn good system, though it helps if you turn on your radar (HMS Sheffield, take note).

Are those wicked laser-based defence systems still under development ? I saw a test run a while back, where it took down a mortar round inflight. It's supposed to do the same to the Katjushas.

Or were the things too expensive after all ?
Title: Re: The Countdown
Post by: Sandwich on August 21, 2006, 09:08:32 am
One. :shaking:

The Nautilus is (IIRC) the laser-based anti-missle thingy. The Arrow I and II are the anti-missile missiles. From what I remember, they're hypersonic; capable of intercepting Scuds while still over Iraqi soil. And they have a very high success rate, too.

My friend traveled to Iran yesterday. I seriously hope nothing bad happens while he's in-country.

If we don't hear from you for 72 hours, we will assume that you are trapped with a handful of survivors fighting off mutated super-Hezzies and will mount an HLP rescue mission to get you back. If at all possible, try to mark your location by sending out smoke signals which form the word "Headz" in giant letters over Tel Aviv.

But they weren't the only ones to make such cosmic links. No less than prominent Middle East scholar Bernard Lewis took note of Ahmadinejad's ideology and agenda in a Wall Street Journal op-ed titled "August 22: Does Iran have something in store?"

Although if you're really serious about it then you ought to be using SM-2 Block IV.

Damnit Iran, you've disappointed me again. Everything looked nice and juicy, just ready for war. The weird prophecy day, the hidden Imam thing, large-scale military exercises in Iran, the deadline for the nuclear response.

I was expecting a show, and all I got instead was "We are interested in talks", the same answer they gave months ago. I wanted to see all those secret Iranian military projects, Zulfiqars and Shafaqs and Shahab 5's streaming towards Tel Aviv, only to meet a pissed off IDF waiting for them. I wanted a war, and Ahmedinejad failed to deliver. For shame.
