"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

I'll take a stab and say that you're talking about the ominous atmosphere surrounding August 22nd, the date that Iran has given for replying to the UN's nuclear demands.

If I'm right, I so get like a dozen cookies.

Or a dozen atomic weapons detonated on your doorstep for figuring out thier evil plan.
Not like they'ld go ahead with it anyway. Terrorism is called terrorism for a reason.

Some people actually believe Iran and Israel will enter a nuclear war (Iran presumably having borrowed some nukes for the day) at this date.  Which would be ****, because it's a couple of weeks before my hols are booked for.

Well, I suppose it is more fun than regional nuclear warfare.

How do you figure?

Leipzig game conference (announcment expected)?  The rumoured 'countdown clocks' being installed in HMV?

Ahmananajenijihad is going to challenge Bush to a Sword of the Stars game on the 22nd.

Unfortunately both will be annihilated by my intervening Liir fleet, which over the in-game chat will constantly demand that they accept Origin.

Wow. Here I thought it'd at least take a few days (for people to see it was a daily countdown and not hourly or something), but you go and ruin all my fun, not in a day, nor even an hour, but in 31.5 minutes??!?

Sorry, we're all out of cookies. :p

Anyway, yes, I was referring to Aug. 22nd. For those who don't know, and from what I understand, this year, August 22nd is the day on the Islamic calendar when tradition holds that Mohammed ascended to heaven from Jerusalem, and Jerusalem was bathed in a great light. Feel free to Google "August 22", but I'll tell you right now that according to Islamic scholars, it looks like something big might go down on that day. Read a few of the articles, they're pretty freaky. There's also the whole "Hidden Imam" thing, which is apparently an Islamic messiah-type event.

In plain terms, some people think that Ahmadeninjhad might be planning to nuke Jerusalem on that day... or at least try to. It would certainly bathe Jerusalem in "a great light". Sounds pretty farfetched, I admit... Jerusalem, location of the 3rd holiest site in Islam? Nuked by a Muslim? The thing is, if he truly believes that "the end is nigh", and by nuking Jerusalem he'll help move things along... :nervous:

Anyway, I'd write a will or something, but I don't think that any of my possessions will survive a nuclear blast. I guess the only thing I can say is this: If I'm incincerated, my postcount goes to Setekh. :p

If the **** goes down, I call dibs on naming my survivalist militia "The Brotherhood of Steel". And the wastelands will fall swiftly to our wrath, for enemies will flee before the coolness of our name.

edit: I also think people tend to exegerate to extent to which Ahmadinejad is willing to do crazy ****. The man seems to have a fairly firm grip on reality, and many people have fallen into the trap of believing that their enemies are for some reason also bat**** insane.

I have a feeling that you're right about that, but unfortunately, all it takes is one madman, and a distinct lack of a 007 to foil his dastardly plot.

Haven't you ever seen Mad Max? Australia will house the only living humans after the **** hits the fan, and since you'll be long dead at that time, I might as well nick that excellent militia name.
