... at a University whose name I will disclose tomorrow. :P
Wish me luck. Oh, I'm majoring in physics btw.
-
Tap all the fine, blonde, (female) geek ass you can get your grubby little mitts on.
-
Congrats at starting college; that will be a big mile-marker for your life. Good luck with your physics major! :)
-
does it have to be blonde? :p
-
Enjoy physics.........
But if you want a job go for engineering. :p
-
If you want a job, spend the money on some cameras instead of tuition and make money filming porn, weddings and no-budget horror.
It's what I'm doing.
-
yeah! go physics majors!!
(also, i've been following an0n's first post in this thread since february)
-
Have fun. Uni rocks. Whats the career plan?
-
Good job.
In a week I start highschool

Hey, don't knock physics! I'm a 3rd yr physics specialist and you're scaring me.
-
Good luck! :D

Who says he needs a career plan? College can be a place where people discover new interests and find out what they want their career to be. I think it's a mistake to look at it as job training.
(Of course, I'm a philosophy major and a music minor, so I might be saying that because I'm afraid I'll have no career.)
-

Quite so. It was in my second year that I decided to do graduate medicine and start my career as a doctor.
-

Engineering graduates come a dime a dozen these days. With the way outsourcing is going right now, I'd say if you want a [good] job, then go pre-med, pre-law, or pre-business.
Pre-law or pre-business is usually the fastest...

See? Darius is already ahead; the turtle wins the race.

I'm a firm believer you never know what you really want to do until you're fully committed to doing something else.

Did everyone survive day 2?
-
Day 2 is still in progress over here. I only have one class on Tuesdays and it's at 3:55. I was thinking Tuesdays would be days off but last night I realized it will be more like a run errands day. I stood in line for an hour to exchange some books since the bookstore gave me the wrong ones in the first place, but it turns out you need a credit card number to get refunded and I couldn't call my dad to ask for the number since the bookstore is underground and I couldn't get any reception.
Anyway, as for where I am right now I tried and failed to think of a witty way to reveal it. Let's just say that it's in state and we briefly had a member on HLP from said University, which caused the Texan HLPers (myself included) to flip out given the school's... reputation, and so it's ironic that I'm going here now.

Hmmm. Are you going to OU? That causes most Texans I know to flip out.
-
Well, you know what they say about philosophy majors.
Eh, not quite. I know music students are fags, though. And that makes me proud.

Sure you'll have a career. Grab some pre-pubescent boys, eat some grapes, wear loose white sheets as clothes and let the plebs support your relaxed, luxurious lifestyle. Being a philosopher kicks ass, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. And best part is that future generations will kiss your proverbial asshole, no matter how crazy you are.
-
Good job.
In a week I start highschool
Lol.
I start college September 5th, at a University of Wisconsin, which is known worldwide. Can't wait..
for the college chicks, that is.

Well, I'm not actually assuming that philosophy will be my career path, mainly because I have little interest in teaching, (or graduate work in philosophy, for that matter.) I see it more as acquiring a knowledge base that will be useful in other areas of interest, like creative writing. If I had real guts, I probably would have gone all out and been a music major.
-

Oh, actually I might have been thinking philosophy majors. Totally different scenario.
But yes, everyone tends to be one step ahead of the music majors... except, of course, philosophy majors. :D
-
Which leads to a perplexing line of inquiry: As a student of philosophy and music, am I one step ahead of myself, or one step behind myself?
-
Shouldn't you already know that.... and be able to put it to music?
-
My bud, Anthony, went to college about a week ago to Texas. I won't see him around these parts for about 3 months till he is home from X-mas break.
-

Philosophy is your major, correct? Major > music minor. You're one-half step ahead.
-
Eh, not quite. I know music students are fags, though. And that makes me proud.
Screw you.

Exactly.
 It's because I'm probably the only one here :(

Btw, you still haven't told us the name of the university........

Look a couple posts up. I've linked to one of my own posts from about a year and a half ago. It's quite ironic.

Yeah for music! My brothers a music major. How on Earth are you going to get a job in philosophy? The only thing I see them doing is teaching philosiphy. No one hires people to "think" for them (in the philosophy way).
-
As I said in that same post, college is not job training. I'm studying these things because they're my areas of interest. I have no idea where I'll end up career-wise. That's not what I'm thinking about right now.

Alright, I've just gotta ask. Do you just read through threads until you can find some reason to bash Christians or organized religion in some way?
Can we just have one thread where we don't have to hear it?

Awesome, my sister's planning to go music major herself. Where does (or did) your brother go, by chance? My sister's still looking around for somewhere with a good music program.

That means I can say all users with the name 'Kazan' are always wrong all the time. Always all all ways always every way all possible ways all all all. Yup.
Back on topic, I agree with Ford Perfect. I know few people aside from doctors and lawyers that actually get a job specific to their major. I've found college to be a place where you can learn what you want (or don't want) to do with your life, and then how to do it well/educated.
[edit]Due to the true, yet volitile nature of my post, it will be the last I post in this thread as to keep from starting a flame war and derailing the thread. There will be no exception. Go ahead, try insulting my mother! :p Thank you, we will now return to regularly scheduled programming.[/edit]
-
Well, I starty my foundation Degree in IT and Multimedia computing on the 18th :) Yay for mid-life career changes :D
-
As far as I'm concerned, college is primarily a place to get a piece of paper that certifies your degree. :D Maybe grad school will be better, but I don't have high expectations.
Any other math majors here? I'm finishing up with my math degree and am planning to going into applied math for grad school next year. If I do a pure math Ph.D. I am pretty much locked into an academic career track (which I've decided I don't want to do), but in applied math I can do basically the same stuff while having a lot more job options in industry and finance.
-
Look a couple posts up. I've linked to one of my own posts from about a year and a half ago. It's quite ironic.
I just saw you rambling on about "Aggies"........
-
@ Redsniper: Eh, buck up. All of the more ludicrous stuff that goes on at A&M is surprisingly easy to abstain from. That's really just the Corps' doing anyway.
While I agree with Kosh that you are going to be hard pressed to find employment outside of academia, A&M does have a top notch physics program. Who are some of your profs? I might know one or two of them. If you wise up (joking! joking!) and decide to go engineering, let me know. My wife and I have a lot of contacts in the Mechanical and Civil engineering departments.
@ Ford: To each his own, but I for one had limited funding that meant I needed to pick a career and run with it if I didn't want to end up buried in debt for the rest of my life. That, and I think I've always known I wanted to design new technology, so engineering was the logical choice. The decision wasn't hard. In a way, though, I kind of envy the approach you are taking. There were a lot of courses unrelated to my "career" I didn't have time to take. Still, that has not stopped me from learning about them on my own.

Over the last year I've been hearing all these stories from companies complaining about a "big shortage of engineers". I'm not sure how true that is though........
But I really am not so sure engineers are "a dime a dozen"......

... at a University whose name I will disclose tomorrow. :P
Wish me luck. Oh, I'm majoring in physics btw.
Good luck redsniper. University is a completely different experience than you've probably had before. Its full of opportunities and pitfalls. If I can offer some advice...focus hard on your schoolwork and do as well as you can...but try and balance that with the fun filled opportunities. I regret passing many of those up to get my work done and while that was very important to my overall goal...I definately missed out on things that I should have done. You always need a break from hard studying and its best to do it with friends.
Also don't worry or think about jobs at the end. No matter what you're in (except maybe Pre-med), you're never going to end up with a job in the area that you studied in. Whats important is your overall field of knowledge and the learning capabilities that university teaches you.
Good luck! Enjoy yourself!

I'm thinking I missed out in university...but in my program I didn't really have the time/didn't make the time. Sad thing.
Hope you enjoyed your first year redsniper. It gets harder and easier at the same time from here on in. Bit of an experience. Its been two years and I'm still recovering from undergrad :D

I'm currently finishing up the third year of a physics major that I've come to almost despise, so I certainly wish you better luck over the next two years than me. :p

This is the question we're all dying to know, just because we are living vicariously through you!

So Red, I'm a little afraid to ask, but what do you think of A&M after going there a year?

Well actually, I changed my major to Mechanical Engineering near the beginning of this semester, so to whoever was joking that I should switch over, you win... something. :p
Right its been 8 months a few days since "tomorrow" Got lucky yet Red? ;7

Sorry to disappoint, but no I haven't. Despite changing my major, I've been on a Physics major's schedule for the past two semesters (taking Honors Physics no less), which is brutal to say the least. :sigh:
If you want some action you should probably try living vicariously through someone else. ;)
So Red, I'm a little afraid to ask, but what do you think of A&M after going there a year?
I like it well enough. I've managed to find a couple clubs that are relevant to my interests (Texas Aggie Game Developers, and the Aggie Anime Appreciation Society, if you must know). The Corps seems more and more stupid the more I think about it though; it's just a bunch of guys who want to play Army but aren't hardcore enough to join the real military :p. But overall, yeah I like it.
-
I can't even remember making that earlier post in this thread. :p
My last classes as an undergrad were today. I still need to do two final exams early next week, but they are outside my major and my grades don't matter at this point, as I've already gotten into grad schools.

My semester officially ends in two weeks, although it doesn't matter for me as I don't have any tests or grades these days.
-
My spring semester ended as of yesterday. After that 2 semesters left until i graduate. Have fun in college. It's a wacko experience. Lot's of ****ed things happen like taco bell bags full of fully digested taco bell being flug at the freshman dorms. And there the famous ****ting in the washing machine. Who the **** is going to want to do that? Anybody can fix the problem easily by just putting the washer on a wash cycle. It's better to in fact **** in a dryer and turn it on on high temp.
Also when you become of drinking age if you aren't already. All of the freshman will discover your age and beg you all the time to buy them alcohol. Don't do it, they will always get caught, and always rat you out (seen it happen to too many of my friends who are of drinking age).
Be weary of blondes. They're quite stupid as their appeal disappeared from my minds eye 5 years ago (for good reason). Upon that note, use condoms, you don't know where everyones been (use them).
Congrats on a year finished  As for me i switched my major 3 times. I really had no clue what i wanted to do. Don't be surprised if later you are interested in switching it again. And of course get your core classes out of the way first. Then get other class requirements done as well. That way you'll be unimpeded on your way of being able to take whatever the hell classes you want without any haunting requirements (because they've been completed already). I ended up doing this on accident, i'm stuck in collegiate god mode right now. All the classes i need to take are all the good ones i'm interested in that actually work toward graduating and my major, there also the only classes i have left.
But, also whatever, you got through your first year
Anway i'll get out of here since an0n figured me out in another thread. HI-HO Jesus Ring, by the power of salvation....away!!!!! (flies away)
