Title: After Many Trials...
Post by: Raptor on September 18, 2006, 03:48:08 pm
...The GTD Hera is back in game, and she is armed to the teeth!  ;)

Now I have a real incentive to finish the texturing! :D Despite how daunting a task that is... :shaking:

Is that like a MkII of the Hades. Also the name... Boy, Hades must be jealous that the wife of his bitter rival beat them all. Anyways, RATING time:

Model: Kudos for that :D 4/5
Skin: Not done but I'd like to see it when its done. Currently 2/5 but I'm expecting a 5/5 :D
Concept: Unfortunately my originality senses are screaming that it is only a Hades clone. Its not me, its that feeling I get in the back of my mind. Its all in my head anyways so it doesn't matter.

Textures = yucky  :ick:

Ship = very cool!   :yes:

@Vengeance: What's wrong with a Hades clone? The original Hades is a very neat ship (crappy campaign it was featured in notwithstanding).

Not really, it's loosely based on it.

Here's the Saturn (my retexture). Hera's precursor...

Textures = yucky  :ick:
Dude, he posted two lines of text in his post, the second of which said he still needs to finish the textures. :p

So anyways - well done Raptor, what did you get the final total Pcount and turret count down to?

And Getter Robo, err, what's with the smoothed solid grey texture? It squashes all geometric detail the Hera has quite flat, leaving a rather bland grey rock in place. Considering Raptor's made a UV map for it, overwriting that and applying a solid grey tile map instead isn't a particularly effective way to go about retexturing it. ;)

Hmm, and umm, it be pirate day apparently. Wheee! :D
I mean Arrrrr!

Ya i just noticed the pirate stuff too.. I was just posting in another thread and looked at the preview and wtf?!? LOL geez it's already April 1 again.
Title: Re: After Many Trials...
Post by: Raptor on September 19, 2006, 03:30:49 am
It most certainly ain't 1st April, so  :wtf: is with the pirate talk?  Ah, what the hell...

That model you're showing GRG is the Saturn alright, the old, non-SCP retail limits version.  Back then it the hull was about 730 polys.  And I think the version I let out was a simple 'box UV, tiled' mess. :nervous:

Now, LOD0 with full turrets and added hull parts (but no destroyed turret models) = 17732 polys.  Cutting all the extrusions and turret indents, and the ribbing on the engine spars, cut the poly count of the hull itself almost in half, even after a couple of minor geo changes (Before was about 6.4K, now it's 3.8K)

It is meant to be a development of the Hades.  That was a cool ship, just a bit too big and a little too spread out.  Plus badly turreted :ick:  I've considered doing an HTL version of that at points... Thing is I'd redo the turrets completely while I was at it... (well it's meant to be a superdestroyer!)

Arrgh, I was going to get ingame comparsion shots between the Hera and Hades, but FS2 is being stubborn, so we'll have to make do with FRED shots:

As I said, just got to finish texturing it.  Any help would be appricated!

You know... on the original hades (wish i could find a better pic),  remove the all those plyons in the rear (including the bridge) and you've got yourself a transport. (Put the bridge in the very front section)
Title: Re: After Many Trials...
Post by: Raptor on September 19, 2006, 09:23:50 am
I intended to put up a link... once it's done. ;)

First attempt at a 'proper' hull plated texture (the bit above the banks of deck lights):

I've gone for a regular pattern since it makes more sense from a construction point-of-view (can you see the workers just randomly sticking on random sized hull plates haphazardly?)  I have got two possible styles there.  One set of panels has the middle row shifted along.

There will be added bits (patches, scars, details like vents etc) in the future, I just want to know If I'm heading in the right direction...

Title: Re: After Many Trials...

the textures IMHO looks a little cartoony.

the actual ship looks a lot like a modern-day destroyer with an X-wing's rear (Uglies anybody??)

Don't listen to Spartan. I like the Hera, esp. once the texturing is done.

@Spartan: once the texturing is done. Don't judge the textures yet... I made that mistake already.  :p

1. When did constructive criticism ever hurt someone

2. I didn't say I didn't like the Hera, I just wouldn't use it in any of my campaigns

Ans to 1) never, unless it's not said in a polite and fair way.  But then again that wouldn't be constructive criticism.  ATM I'm still blocking out the textures (*cough*hull plating*cough*)  Hence the 'plasticy' look.  I'll be going over the whole hull with the effect I've got with that strip.

& @ 2) Your loss.  ;)

Got a little held up, since I had to redo the turret and sub-parts mapping (currently got two maps used, condensing down to just one), and I need to reconvert anyway...

Once I've redone the turrets (all 96 of them) I'll set to work on the hull...

And BTW, which would people prefer: the shifted plating or the in line version?

Yeah I know, that's why I listed it by NAME. That wasn't the Hera it's the SATURN. That was long ago when I was learning about changing textures. I got half-way satisfied and then forgot about it.  :nervous:

Hera's looking better than I remembered, especially those light banks!

New pic of progress:

Now I know what you're all going to say...  I know it's currently very repetative and dull.  But once I get the whole hull plated I will vary the tone & brightness of the varied plates, plus add defects, scars etc.  Think of it currently being fresh out of the 'perfect finish' shipyard ;)

Though despite going back to the cob in Lilith and editing the UV vertexes to get the UVmap to line up with the actual texture correctly, the bloody pixels (of the armour belts that follow the main ribs) still don't line up!   :hopping:

GRG, this is the benefitt of honking huge UVmaps :p  Though I'm not looking forward to doing the plating on the bow.  Not only are the planes double angled, but they're large ones too, so any distortion will be noticible.  At least I'll have a little practice before I get there...

Oh, and Nuke, I've got two of your favoured turrets on this ship... ;)

The Hera was one of the first ten original mods worth getting IIRC.
It always made think of a transport corvette from the Federation. (starship troopers)
But it IS a sleek secksy new hades to be honest.

Was???

Raptor you release an alpha or something? Or is he just confusing Hera (Still WIP) with the Saturn (released)...

Title: Re: After Many Trials...
Post by: Raptor on September 21, 2006, 01:29:45 pm
Maybe.  The Saturn evolved into the Hera, so it might be easy to get them confused.

Anyway... more screenies!

I took this after, seeing how the Hera suffered against bombers, switched nine of her broadside pulse cannons for my new 'standard' flak gun.

Now THAT'S a flak screen! :eek2:

Further development of the Hera's weapons to improve the anti-bomber abilities (primarily head on), have meant that half of the uber-long ranged plasma turrets have been moved and/or replaced, and the original two vulcan turrets upgraded (to keep the turret count the same rather than go over 100)  Thus she loses much of her long range anti-warship punch for better point defences.

There are now only six turrets above and below the central hull.  You can still see the texture for going around the forward most pair.  The middle turret of each trio is now a quad long ranged flak gun (same turret base, different barrels)

And this one shows the upper three vulcans.

I'm a little concerned that the upgraded vulcan turrets are 'too' big... (3x bigger than before)

I just wish the SCP Coders would insert a 'no shooting through hull' command line option, as they won't make that a default 'on' thing (game balance, apparently)

I'll definetely agree with the shot through hull, a lot of my cap ships have that problem too.

I see you had the same idea as I had once.  Use a shockwave effect (though I was thinking of using an old weapon effect) to create a new look for flak guns.  Mine was going to do almost no damage, but would generate EMP instead ;)

How many guns were firing to achive that effect?  Any slowdown?  (10 on mine, no slowdown that I saw since I turned -fps off)

Title: Re: After Many Trials...
Post by: Scooby_Doo on September 22, 2006, 02:59:33 am
EMP now that would be nasty  :eek2:

Let's see there's 2 gilgameshes and 1 aurora (each has 2 flak turrets top/bottom). The one frigate is i think too far back to be launching.  I'm hazarding a guess just two turrets maybe 3 at most. As for speed, don't even bother looking at my framerates. Also theres several dual laser, dual tachyons firing at a good rate $Fire Wait: .5 and .75 respect.

Hmm, I go away for the weekend and the thread goes all quiet...

Well, here's the work I did before I left:

The transitation from one texture to the other is almost perfect.  Just needs a slight shift of pixels. :D

I would have posted a second image showing the rest of the work (all the way back to abve the engines) but it looks like I'll have to go into the cob file again because there's a poly in that shot which is pure black... and shouldn't be so :hopping:

Is there a figher bay for this warship?

That enough of an answer for ya? :D

What you see here is the launch bay.  The hanger bay is actually located in the centre of the ship, filling the forward-mid two fifths (approx) of the ships core, from the bow all the way to the engineering section (were all the spars erupt)

There is also a docking bay on the ventral surface (between the lower engine spars) that is large enough to contain two Terran cruisers (Fenris or Aeolus hulls) side by side... just.

Haven't figured out what is wrong with the docking path (causes CTD if a ship tries to dock), but as you can see, the launch bay works just fine... ;)

 :bump:

After a period of hibernation (due to me power-watching seasons 1-8 of Sg-1), The Hera has finally come out with a (slightly) new look.

(http://img302.imageshack.us/img302/9580/hera28cp6.th.jpg) (http://img302.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hera28cp6.jpg)
Instead of having a sprinkling of small cutaways, I've now got a few large ones.

(http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/816/hera29fg5.th.jpg) (http://img246.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hera29fg5.jpg)
The redone dorsal turret array.

(http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/4222/hera30fh4.th.jpg) (http://img246.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hera30fh4.jpg)
A closer look at the new inserts.  Only filled in the rows of lights on one so far... :shaking:

(http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/1475/hera31ww3.th.jpg) (http://img170.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hera31ww3.jpg)
Firing a volley of Titan missiles.  However the missiles are not behaving themselves.  They are supposed to be cluster warheads.  But when I add 'Spawn XXXX' to the weapon flags... they stop working.
Cue much fustration. :hopping:  Espically since they were working at one point.

When it's done.  When else? ;)

Progress has been slowed due to having to replot all the deck lines, and the VLS missiles have been scrubbed for the time being (can't get the pesky things to work right...)

Might rework the turrets once more (on Ver3 now!)  as this ship can kill a fighter at 15kms... :nervous:

Currently it's very deadly to hostile fighters, though that may be a result of the turrets firing through the hull.  I gave them the FOV's they would have if that were not the case (*cough*hint-to-coders*cough*)

Which would people perfer as far as deck lights go:  Random length and randomly lit, or regular length/pattern and randomly lit?

There's a building on campus like the former.  It's a messed up place.  Course, the art building's worse...

Asymmetry might be interesting, but damn, at least make it symmetrical... *eyeroll*

As to the ship, the latter, I'd say.

Yes, well... are you sure we REALLY needed to know that?

small update:  finished plating and lighting one of the main textures( outer engines, bridge, central hull).  Now I have to do the second one, which has all the hard parts (the bow, the stern, the main engines)

After that, it's detailing the spars and the cruiser bay, and then weathering...

And a early version release is in the works... ;) doubt it'll have LODS (every time I try to remove some of the indents, the UVmapping gets screwed up) But it'll work and should have debris.

This is the kind of ship that looks like it'll bring a tear to my eye...

...if I try to bomb it with no shields.

When this comes out, that's so my first test for it. Pit wing after wing after wing of unshielded bombers against it, and see how long it takes to die.

No, I'm not doing it for the carnage, I just hate shields and turn them off when I can, so it's more like dogfighting. >>;

That said, this looks awesome. I can't wait to see more! That flak screen alone sold me. :D

Well, two wings of six Nahema's one right after the other are tore to shreads after releasing only one volley of torpedoes (though those are my own Shivan Torpedoes, which I can't remember if I gave longer ranges than Cylops), and not one torpedo gets through thanks to the PDT's.

There is a blind spot in the coverage though, I think...

The usual wide angle whole ship shot.  I've got all the hull plates outlined (except the nameplate texture).  Now I just have to finish giving them that texture effect...(around the aft of the ship)

Up close and personal :D  I have to admit that I'm not 100% about the large trianglar faces on the bow, but I'm really struggling to do any better that this.

Now just to start adding defects...

The release version I put out will have a couple different colour textures included.  So you'll be able to chose between this bluish colour, or have steel-gray, or...?

With a little luck I MIGHT have a release ready by tommorrow evening... (but don't hold me to that!)

Nameplate= GTD Indomitable

 :wtf:

Shouldn't it be GTSD Indomitable? Or is this thing a lot smaller and less powerful than the Hades (of FS1, the FS2 Hades is crap anyway you look at it.)

The 66 turret Hades with Shivan sponsored fun and a 1000 hitpoint engine aint so bad. ;)

But the Hera's still better. I, however, personally, don't really like the texturing. It seems a little unrealistic, the way you've done the baby-blue type color scheme with the brick-style tiles. And the lighting tiles should be randomized, they look like someone wrote:

All over those light tiles.

But, still, they're not bad or anything. Hope we DO get it tommorow.

Nameplate= GTD Indomitable

 :wtf:

Shouldn't it be GTSD Indomitable? Or is this thing a lot smaller and less powerful than the Hades (of FS1, the FS2 Hades is crap anyway you look at it.)

It's a destroyer.  Observe:

GTD Orion (retail): Length 2023m, width 713m, height 744m
GTSD Hades: Length 3404m, width 1219m, height 1825m

GTD Hera: Length 2504m, width 1004m, height 1004m

So it's about as big as a destroyer gets.  True, that doesn't take into account the actual volume of the ship.  The Hades is large, but it's all spread out.  The Orion by contrast is compact.

Firepower wise... well that is a little more blurry.  By FS2 standards, it is a super destroyer.  Which makes it a fraction more powerful than what Shivan destroyers should be ;7

Oh, and the current nameplate is 'Indomitable' since it's the fourth weapons fit I've done.  1st was Hera, then Agnememon, then Victory, and now finally the Indomitable pattern ;)  Now if I can just figure out how to get the 'replace texture' feature of FRED to work right...

@Snail

Well, I did say that I'm still working on the textures.  The colouration of the hull plating was intended to be a steely blue-grey.  I will randomise the lights once I've got them all marked in.

He already said it would be available in several colors.  :D

That's the plan, though it might need to be in a seperate download pack, given the size of the files...

Here's the now default nameplate, showing the intended look for the main hull plating.

PS: Oh, and I think I released an upgunned Hades a while back.  66 turrets sounds about right for the number I put on it...

The model looks OK, but the Textures are dodgy IMO. The whole thing looks too regular and boring (and yes, I know you think that anyone designing the ship would want to use a standard size of armour plating, and I agree - but this is a game, where looks are more important than reality) and the big thick black lines and monotonous grey makes the whole thing look cartoony.

If those lines have been drawn on as vectors, I'd suggest you edit down the wifth by a few pixels. If they're rasters (Which is far more likely - vectors can be a pain to work with) well, you may be stuck with them.

A few hints:
1 - Vary the size, shape and and especially colour and brightness of your plates. It will make your armour look 100% more interesting straight away.

2 - Texture your armoured plates after you draw the lines on - at the moment it's really obvious that you used a textired fill and then drew lines on top - the textures continue through the plates, which completely throwes any chance the ship will have of looking built rather than modelled and textured. When I texture my plates, if I use a fill at all it's only over a single plate space, and then I generally go around the edges with a textured airbrush to try to segregate the texture on this plate from those around it. It also helps to vary up the colours and brightnesses a bit. Also, if you're putting your texture on after the line, you can use a low tolerance fill or magic wand to differentiate each plate to vary the colour up a bit - as it is now you're probably going to have to box select each plate to change the colours (and I fear it'll make it look even more textured rather than built if you have contiguous patterning between plates with different brightnesses).

3 - Use thinner, slightly brighter lines. Single pixel dark grey lines between armour looks a lot better and less cartoony than big thick black ones.

4 - Bevel your plates. A lot of people may disagree with me on this one, but I think it makes them look a lot better. It's not for every ship, granted, but in some cases it looks really good, especially in conjunction with variable size/shape plates.

I think I whole heartedly agree with Black Wolf.  The texture looks good cause it has signs of fading which makes it more realistic than the rest of the ship texture. Not saying you should do that to the entire thing as it would repeat all over the hull, however.

PS: Oh, and I think I released an upgunned Hades a while back.  66 turrets sounds about right for the number I put on it...

Hmmm... I grabbed it from Hades Combine when Mad Bomber uploaded it. He said someone called Fulgrymm made it for his campaign. Then I replaced the FS2 Hades with it and added scores of SAAA, SRed and LRed turrets to it. ;)

How's this then? ;)

I've done away with the 'baby blue', and added burns, darker plates, and other defects.  I didn't do too much, for fear of going overboard.
Now all the plates and lights are done! :eek2:

The lines were done first, then in PSP I used the 'soften', 'dodge' and 'burn' tools with a custom plate effect texture effect to generate the effect.

I know the texturing is not 100%, but this is the best I can do.  I'm quite open to offers from people who are willing to try their hand at texturing this beast!

And here she is wading right into the heart of a Shivan fleet:

The only flaw I see left is the textures on the engine cross. They're practically invisible against an empty background, and furthermore, they look a little too... plain compared with the more complex textures on the rest of the ship.

Other than that: excellent work!

Fully, 100% percent done?  At this rate... 2100 ;)

BUT you are fortunate in that you don't have to wait till then:
http://rapidshare.com/files/1198073/Hera.rar.html

(Hades Combine refused to upload it.  Kept spiting an error message at me that makes no sense...  Hopefully you will all be able to use this one...)

Please, read the release notes that are contained within the .RAR file.  It contains vital information that you need to know!

Now go forth and kick some Shivan ass! (just don't try and take on a Sathanas head on.  That is just stupid)

I saw this thing and read the poly count 20,000k!!! WTF?!! Wow. That's scary. In a good way.... :nervous:

Anyway, the girder maps look terrible right now (you said that only the tiles and lights are finished). Try making the girders themselves bigger and adding some electronics inbetween them or something. As for the lights, in between the rows, there are some grey regions. Try add something there to make it look better.

As for that, 8)

It's because its larger than 2 megabytes. The upload form only works for <2Mb files. Otherwise you have to request special upload permission on the forums.

You should have seen the earlier poly counts.  It's mainly the turrets that boost the count (What can I say?  When the turret is bigger than any fighter/bomber, you can't really afford to skimp on polys...)

The girders, originally, were actually modelled into the main mesh itself.  That alone ate up a couple k of polys.  I've been kind of stuck on what to do on those really...

THe grey bands between ther rows of lights are the decks.  I envisage the whole ship is built like a hyper dense brick, with the deck space cramed between the deck plates, with massive bulkheads that section off the ship (those big column like things in the side trenches (maybe I should whip together a TS scene...).  There's not much I can do to alter the look of those though.  On the original maps (2560x2560) they are only two pixels wide.

Not at all ;)  Indeed, I was hoping that a real texturer (which I do not consider myself to be) would come along to help me out.  I can model, but I'm not good at texturing (at least, not big stuff...)

Just tell me the address you would like to get the raw texture maps.  You want the textured bmp's, the black/white line ones produced by Lilith, or both?  The important of those maps is that (in theroy) every pixel on them is a half meter square on the model... what? :nervous:

I admit, the UVmapping could be done better too, but this is the best I can do.

20,000 isn't too bad... my Enterprise is about that and the Essex is about 25,000. And yes turrets do add up for a huge chunk.

On the girders, I'd do something like this. (I have Photoshop, dunno the equivalents in PSP.)

Use the Magic Wand to select all the girder lines then rightclick and hit Layer via cut. Next, apply an outer glow to the layer and change the color to a dark grey and reduce the falloff distance. Then I'd make the space between the girder lines pure black. (Magic wand one then shift+click the reast to do them all at once.)

Flatten layers and it'll have a bit of a 3D-ish look. Might also try a little inner glow with the color and transparency set to look like shading. Or possibly bevel and emboss.

Whatever PSP has to add some texture to the girder parts should help them look less flat.
