Title: FIRE!
Post by: Goober5000 on December 07, 2006, 12:04:48 am
See attached.  Runs on unmodded FS2, using any 3.6.9 RC build.

Thanks to Snipes for the rectangle. :)

EDIT: Wow, this has already been downloaded 41 times!  I'm impressed. :) Unfortunately the counter got reset when I uploaded the fixed-stealth version. :sigh:

EDIT2: Added a screenshot, per Fury's request.  The fire is, of course, animated; but the still picture doesn't show that, unfortunately. :)

HAHAHA Goober, you were talking to Tolwyn weren't you?  Because I was messaging him about having fires and I was up till 6am trying to find something good in making fire textures.

Thank You... Btw are there other fire textures (also how did you make the fire texture?)

It doesn't look good...

, looks like I was the third downloader. XD

WTJ, bunch of misplaced Ursas and a really really really really baaaaaaaaaad special effect, the kind I can only get from playing Rainbow Six and looking at the trees in software mode...

And then 'rectangle' was mentioned, I was like, huh waaat? fire? rectangle? waaat?

No offense intended, if I caused any by accident. :)

Yep, I cross-posted in the WCS internal. :)

I used thruster03 for the fire animation.  You could try substituting any of the other thruster animations too.  (You can't actually call the texture any name beginning with thruster, otherwise the game thinks it's a real thruster and doesn't display it.)

This is just the proof of concept to show that it's possible.  It's up to the modders to make improvements. :p

When I get home this evening. :) Unless someone else wants to oblige.

Doing it while being cool.

why's the fire scannable?

It's a proof of concept, simply to demonstrate what can be done.  Of course it could have been done before, but nobody did it.  When I posted the "poor man's cloaking" thread, cloaking had already been possible for over three years but nobody had done it.  When I posted FreeSpaceLancer, I used retail FS2 to create it and run it.

Sometimes, people just need to be shown that something is possible.

why's the fire scannable?
Because I goofed and forgot that friendly stealth ships are still targetable. :) Download it again and it'll be fixed.

I'd challenge anyone to actually make a good animated flame texture.  I got somewheres with static flame but nothing animated  :D

BURN!!! :mad2:

That was rather fast job, and the crappiness is imminent, but that's how I would make a fire texture. Obviously in-game textures should have much more frames, and the transition between frames should be much more smooth... And an actual texture should be made in quite high resolution to make the end result look good enough. But the main method would be probably rather close to how I made this.

Quite good.... how about having one that the sides tapper off, so it looks good without tiling  :)

What, you mean like this?

<except that apparently the black on edges should be... blacker to completely blend the fire into surrounding nothingness. There seems to be some edge still left, but is this what you meant in general?>

Exactly.

It looks like you have a static layer (a glowing fire) and what looks like clouds being moved up

Quickly, someone model the Fire-brigade!!

Kinda... but there's a twist. The clouds that move up do not stay the same. I made four layers of uniform noise clouds, then mixed them up to create two "joining layers" between them to create more seamless movement from layer to layer. These layers were 1024x1024. When that was done, I copied squares first from 0,0 to 512,512, then from 0,40 to 512,552 and so on, moving the selection downwards so that the clouds appear to move up on the fire, like flames do.

Anyway, then I just applied a mask wit white center and black edges, set a suitable layer mode (don't know what it is in English :p), and then copy each composite frame into another file. Now that this was done, I applied the automatic contrast-maximizer (whatever it is in English version of GIMP I don't remember...), then applied Incandescent gradient to every frame and finally a 2pixel Gaussian blur. These GIF's are 256x256 versions of originals.

The method seems to be working a bit better on tileable version; the soft-edged version looks a bit goofy when clouds are emerging from the lower edge below the actual fire starts...

I'd like to see what others' view on fire is. We can't have a decent flamewar with only one guy making flames, now can we? :D

Great, now the Battlestar Galactica modders will want to have a "Fire in Space" mission... ;)

why would flames in space rise?
Title: Re: FIRE!

Who says they're normal flames? A bunch of the time if you watch ds9 when the klingons attack anything with they're plasma disruptors and hit a target, the start trek FX people were cool enough to do an effect in the tv show where you can watch the plasma dissipate after it hits its target. That's not really fire, but one reason you would be seeing flame like things in space.
Another thing is that terran and vasudan vessels both have atmosphere, if you ever see flame jetting out of a vessel in space after a missile hits or something, it's probably because the missile obviously caught something on fire, breached the hull, and is being fueled by the currently venting atmosphere through the breach.
As long as fire has an oxygen source from say venting atmosphere in a hull breach, sure you'll see fire in space, until all the atmosphere gets vented. Not to mention at which the speed the atmosphere would be venting, you'd have some seriously huge and stoked flames that would be jetting out of the ship in an upward fashion(depends on which direction atmosphere is venting).
Also vessels in fs2 are very big, even the fighters, but i'm talking about besides the fighters, big vessels have lots of atmosphere, so you'd have some fires going on fore some time.

They wouldn't, but for example if fire was vented out from a space craft the flames would be moving away from the ship, in which case "down" would be where the ship is, and the fire would diminish toward the end of the flame.

That obviously applies only to flames that are viewed from side. Fire from top would be just an alternating blob if fiery light, possibly leaving a fastly spreading trail of smoke behind the ship.
