This is messed up folks. Second winter in a row where we've basically made it to Christmas with no snow. Oh we saw some flakes once in November. They even stayed on the ground for nearly a whole 12 hours but then it melted. That was it. No snow...and its warm...even the sun comes out although it usually spends most of the day attempting to set.
Anyone remember when it was likely to be a white Christmas instead of this "snowballs chance in hell" likelihood?
-
Where do you live in Canada? I live right here a couple of dozen miles south of the Canadian-American border, and we've had no snow at all. It was almost 50 a few hours ago.
I ****ing love it too.
-
Yeah, Toronto has been crazy-go-nuts warm. This morning it was like 10C, I **** you not. If there's no snow come New Years I'm going to blame Harper and vote NDP in the next election. For all their faults at least the Liberals could make it snow when needed.
And by the way, all my Christmas' are white since my family doesn't take too kindly to coloured folk.
-
I live in an area of the US known for getting utterly blasted with snow in November. I'm not talking 6-8 inches, but something along the lines of 18-24 inches a month before Christmas. And it stays on the ground till February. Guess what? No snow here. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
-
Here in Michigan we got almost an inch back in mid-October.
Of course, there is nothing here right now. It sucks, too because it's just above freezing.
-
none happening here in the most of the uk either, alot of fog thats about it. i think around orkney there is snow. in the next few days there wont be snow, hell even scotland will be warmer than england and that does'nt happen too often due to the mexican gulf stream.
your culprit is global warming.
the last time i saw snow was last year around this time, alot of it, for about 2 weeks that was it(about 3-4 inches high).
-
El'Nino is your true culprit. With that el'nino in place we have a slight chance of seeing snow in the south Christmas night. :D

Most of Colorado has about 2 feet of the stuff.
-
In some areas it's up to four feet.
-
here in calgary canada we just got black ice and that is about it. we went to the mountains for a "vacation" in november and we saw NADA. just fog. hell, IT EVEN ****ING RAINED.
-
Yeah I'm about 35 minutes from Toronto down the highway. Haven't seen much of the stuff for a while and its incredibly warm. Thats fine by me...I love the summer....but usually I appreciate the summer more if we get some nice dumpings of snow. Maybe close down work and stuff like that. Not likely to happen.
-
New Mexico (ironically) got hit with I suspect the same snow system Colorado got. We had ~8 inches, which probably doesn't sound like much to you northerners, but for us this is HUGE. Biggest single snowfall I think we've had in several years.
Of course, this being New Mexico, the weather turned on a dime and is now bright, completely clear sky, with lots of sunshine. It's almost warm enough for T-shirts.

I've never asked, but where exactly are you? Cause "35 minutes down the highway" sounds suspiciously like where I live (if by "down" you mean toward Missisauga). Also your street, house number and times of day when the place is left unattended would be helpful.
-
lol

Steel town boy right here. Its 35 minutes at the proper top speed.

We need to get Hillary Clinton to tell Colorado to share its snow with the rest of the US. :p
-
Yay for weather behaving weird :D
No snow in germany. It's just coming down in it's molten form. ::)
-
Here it hasn't snowed heavily since 1985 (80 centimeters/30 inches, but I'm not sure... I wasn't born yet). All we had in these years is only some flakes that melt quickly.
Until last year.
I was at school with the scooter, and it snowed 20 centimeters/8 inches. 1 hour to do 5 kilometers with the scooter :wtf: By the next morning, we had 80 centimeters/30 inches.
However, I think that this year we are not getting any snow, it's too hot (we are around 0 Celsius).

Its the same situation here in Sweden. Its 10 degrees celsius where i live only the the northern region have snow.

This weather is really pissing off us Finns. I know what to blame, the European Union! The ****ers have gone and standartized the weather! Now we have to enudre these crappy wet winters like those around the rest of EU. :mad2:
-
Weird, here in Portugal we're having abnormal cold compared to other winters. Some places have negative celsius.
Unfortunatly snowing here is a true christmas miracle. :sigh:

Nothing in the DC area yet, although we rarely get any snow here before the end of the year.
-
don't think we should be using slang terms to discuss cocaine abuse here on Hard Light.
-
Here in Vancouver, we generally don't get much snow but we had record snow fall this year in November.
-
Here in Michigan we got almost an inch back in mid-October.

I live in Michigan too... High for Detroit area is like 52 today. I think I'll take a walk. :)

OH NOES ITS GLOBALZ WARM1NG!!!!1
-
OH NOES ITS GLOBALZ WARM1NG!!!!1
Between that and a hyperactive El Nino...you're probably right! :)
-
Hehehehe, the models are showing light snow for us in Alabama on Christmas day. ;7 :pimp:
-
Snow in Alabama but nothing in Indiana/Canada? :wtf: Is the entire North American continent doing a handstand or something?
This weather is cuh-ray-zee.
-
El'Nino is your true culprit. With that el'nino in place we have a slight chance of seeing snow in the south Christmas night. :D
When El Nino is the norm, instead of a once and a while occasional thing, it's called a climate change. What was El Nino becomes the norm, and the "norm" is then called El Nino. It's global warming. El Nino is what I think of as the "preview" of what the weather will become impermanently over time.
-
too bloody much precipitation in my corner of the continent, I like my water falling from the sky spring through fall thank you very much, I like a nice dry freeze during the winter, I live in a desert, shouldn't I have a right to expect that?
rain shadow, phh pansy ass rain shadow
-
It's summer. Three days ago I was swimming in the top end. Today I'm hanging out in shorts and T shirt here in rural WA. On Boxing Day, if I can swing it, I'll be at the beach.
I like Christmas time.
-

I can't believe no one noticed the irony...WeatherOp giving the true cause of the "Christmas Without Snow!"

Actually, my Christmas is looking more white as time passes. :p
-
I like having no snow since then I don't need to deal with it while driving
-
Never have seen snow, and I don't think I will, aslong as I live in Florida. And if you think 10°C is warm Rictor.. That's about as cold as it gets down here, and people dress up like it's another ice age, I just wear jeans and a T-Shirt though. :p
But in Canada.. I've always heard of it being an ice age up there So it's understandable. Right now it's... 89°F, I **** you not. Warm huh? :nervous:
Edit: Holy Crap, I need to reconsider my carrer ambitions, I totally forgot El Nino was active, and I want to be a Meterologist.
-
Canada, at least not Southern Ontario, is not an iceage...but we're getting further from that than ever before. When I was young we'd have nice big snowbanks from about late November/early December until March when things started to thaw out a bit. We've had so much rain that the grass out my window is still somewhat green (although a bit spotty). In the summer we can easily compete with Florida for temperature if not for humidity.
Yeah...I remember that I used to be able to make snowmen. I suspect that by the time I have children, doing such a thing will be basically impossible.
-
What does snow look like again?
Oh, I live in Upstate New York... second or third year without descent snow. The grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence... all the grass around here is GREEN!! FREAKIN GREEN! GO TO HELL EL NINO! I WANT MY SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I recall a couple of weeks ago in the outskirts of DC, we got a massive but highly localized "blizzard" that lasted 5 minutes. The wind picked up to ~40mph and sheets of snow crystals were flowing across the ground. It looked as if it was a storm in the antarctic. Was hilarious to see everyone on the streets just pause and go "URH, what the hell!?"
Aside from that, though, there's been no "winterish" weather to speak of around here. Hope this sort of thing doesn't become more common in the future. :(
Look out! *points* The global warming is right behind you!!! *runs around screaming*
-
Real blizzards are fun, if rather painful to dig out of.
-
No one can possibly blame this on global warming. While most of you used to getting snow right now are ice-free, New Mexico (which never gets snow) is one nightmare of a snowstorm. Our tempertatures are the lowest they've been in some five or six years, and the interstate just closed completely down due to ice. Our transportation crews are getting a workout they haven't had in a very long time...
So all of you who want snow: please take it away from us!

Actually...all of that speaks to global warming. So I'm a bit confused by your statement.
This is down right unnatural weather were having. Its January 1st, 2007...and there hasn't been more than a trace amount of snow on the ground in souther ontario. Aside from last year this is unprecedented.

Well, if things happen like alot are expecting, you coudl really get your wish mid-month.

Whoa, I'm in Michigan too! xD And not too far from Detroit, at that. Far enough to not be Detroit, but close enough to make jokes about DE-troit. ...*cough* Sorry, had to say it.
I miss the white stuff. ;_; We need some snow. Not just for snow days, but for ...well, yes, for snow days.

The UK hasn't had a white Christmas for something like 40 years now. It's wierd to think my Grandparents used to skate on the Thames. That said though, when Ceaser invaded the UK in early AD, he described a land of Vineyards, and our summers are too cold for those without greenhouses these days.
Even the UK, which is famous for it's fascination with talking about the weather, doesn't have accurate records of temperatures more than 100 years old. So whether there are mini-cycles and just how much affect Global warming or dipping is having, I really couldn't even begin to guess.

Flipside QFT.
Of course the planet is warmer...because the sun is warmer.

http://www.john-daly.com/solar/solar.htm
etc.
We're also still coming out of the last ice age.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age
Of course, humans are good at seeing patterns. But because you see a pattern over a couple of years doesn't qualify you to judge a cycle that takes hundreds. That's called junk science. Seems to me Greenland was pretty green for the vikings, I wonder what happened? Oh yeah, global cooling.
I remember back in the days of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Spring) (holy crap that book did a lot of damage) we were all going to freeze to death and the oceans were supposed to be empty long ago. I wonder what happened? IT'S A FAD!
Unfortunately the term "global warming" has come to mean "global warming is caused by man and it's going to kill everybody so politicians must spend more of our money". I'm calling Bull**** on that. Hey wait, someone already did (http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-4480559399263937213&q=penn+teller+environment).
What about the sea is rising because glaciers are melting?
Because of the limited geographic coverage of these records, it is not obvious whether the apparent decadal fluctuations represent true variations in global sea level or merely variations across regions that are not resolved.
Statistics lie folks, especially when someone has an agenda.
I say relax and plant some vegetables. If you've got to have the snow, you can always move where there is some. ;)

What? Where do you live? I live about 2 hours south of canadistan and we at least have some snow. Maybe only an inch, and it is melting, but we do have some snow. (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y261/GawkyEndymion000/snow2.gif)

Floods and monsoon rains here in Singapore

http://www.handpen.com/Bio/sun_freaks.html
How did they get information on sunspots for the period between 1600-1750?
-
I don't know that, but it was certainly possible to observe. They knew how to make pinhole cameras and colored glass back then.
You may also be familiar with this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikythera_mechanism.
It's tempting to think that science has just been discovered, but since the Library at Alexandria was burned we don't have a clue what man has already discovered and forgotten. It's arguable that men 3000 years ago were a lot smarter than men today.
-
Gallileo was obsessed with the sun, iirc, he damaged one of his eyes by looking at it through a telescope, and ended up inventing the projection system that most people use today. He was born in 1594 so the dates given seem about right.
Oddly enough, the Chinese knew about sunspots in 50BC, but it wasn't till Gallileo gave an explanation in 1612 that anyone had an idea what they were.
-
At least with regards to the eastern half of North America, the real culprit at the present time for these unseasonably warm temperatures is a rather stubborn southern high that's circulating warm air up from the Gulf. The jet stream is also at a very high latitude right now, which means that any systems that do move across the continent shoot way up and give us rain instead of snow. Combine that with El Nino, and you have a rather warm situation at the moment. I'd imagine that something similar applies for Europe, as well. However, as a few meteorologists have said, Mother Nature has a way for paying you back, so I'm sure we'll all be freezing our asses off in a few weeks. :p
-
Apparently in Europe it's the warmest winter in 500 years. All the ski resorts in the Alps are being forced to advertise hiking tours and whatnot to draw in tourists. "No global warming" my hairy ass.
I think it's pretty clear that the real culprit here is Manbearpig. Quick, go find Al Gore so we can end this menace once and for all!
-
Just an update:
Colorado - Everywhere from Vail to the Easern Plains, we got dumped: 30 inches, 2 blizzards, 8 days
Snowshovel - $20 Snowblower - $100 Sliding around in an All Wheel Drive - Priceless
New Mexico - Even the Rio Grande Valley got snow, we got dumped too: 11 inches, ONE blizzard, 2 days
-
I'm sick of Snow here in Colorado. It's next to the streets, covering the sidewalks and the bus stops, generally in about three feet of dirty snow.
-
Hey, good news Mars:
There's a new storm front coming in...
-

I think you guys stole our snow...thats what we normally have...ever winter. Except this one and the last one and a few before that.
-
Would you mind passing some of that stuff eastward, Mars? I'm sick to death of this sixty-degree bull****. If I wanted weather like this, I'd move to (God forbid) Florida. Gimme back my winter, dammit! :p
-
Just when I thought Winter had eluded us over in Nevada, we get dumped on at least 6-8 inches all over town, and it's still coming down, lightly as of right now.
Impressive.. how Winter can come back and slug you in the gut without warning.
-
Also here the situation is very strange...
Here in Northern Italy (which is usually cold) we are having very warm days. In Southern Italy (which is usually warm) there is snow... :wtf:
-

My school district didn't announce the cancellation until I was already there... dear god... that hurt, the snow is horizontal here.

-
Most of it, even the weather in Europe, England, Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. is all probably due to El Nino

Actually, Al Gore is supporting the modernization of Oil refineries, to reduce emissions.
But I could be wrong, we all know how two-faced politicians can be.....
-
Actually, Al Gore is supporting the modernization of Oil refineries, to reduce emissions.
Riiight.
When I support something it costs me time and money.
When politicians support something it costs me time and money, while costing them very little time and no money.
I could do with less support.

You should be hung by your nuts for saying that, people at where I live go crazy over flurries. :p
